the prodigy-- better than ever!! how do they do it?

I have been a huge fan of the prodigy since the 90's .
to me, I think the last 2 albums are some of there best. however, I still can't figure out their process of composing and making such awesome music. . It doesn't really fit in any one genre.
My question to this community is how do they do it? I love going on youtube and watching metallica build a song from scratch. is there anything videos, or we isolde's, or docs showing how liam does it? I've seen jim pavlov videos on youtube, they are great. Any i have lots of dvds of theirs, and none really have much behind the scenes. but i want more. please help guys.

  • man they are the shit

  • I think Liam Howlett started out just using a Roland W30 when he made "Charley"... The group use to be in Future Music magazine a lot explaining how they did there music, & what gear they had at the time, but I can't remember now(many, many years ago)....

Sounds like Liam soaked up all sorts of influences and let those spill out into his work.

Maybe, but I think he first started out with with an old Moog Prodigy, from whence derived the name.

  • This was always the Prodigy tune that did it for me. Pure bassbin sufferin'!!!!!!! My iPhone doesn't do it justice - need to play this again when I get home for the full effect.

  • Rumors are they exclusively use Poison-202 presets ;)

EDIT: I didn't realize at first that you already knew about the making of videos.

  • This was my introduction to Prodigy, a Front242 remix...

  • They have fun with it, they live it, that's how they keep doing it...they are not even trying...

  • They came into the cybercafe part of the web company in Bristol I worked for. We had a little card made up on the counter "lemon drizzle cake, approved by THE PRODIGY", who loved it apparently.

  • i know. I just want to be a fly on the wall while Liam is writing a song, to see his process.i can't figure it out. i feel like onstage he plays some synth , but mostly triggering and playing samples as if it was just another instrument. i guess

I bet he is so high on various drugs that he will figure out that the fly on the ceiling is spying on him xD

  • I read years ago that he at that time used Reason.

  • With a lot of cut and paste

is that meant to be demeaning? Because there's a lot more going on than a collage in Liam Howlett's music

    NO

    .

  • Not so much the 'how?' as the 'what with?':

There are other examples, google 'The prodigy samples'. Liam's obvious love for hip hop, funk and dub/roots = funkier than most from that early scene. But everything was fair game; the wider the listen, the deeper the reservoir. Like The Beatles. >:)

  • Not a how to video but a neat combo...
