Let Us Now Praise Once Famous Apps
I'm thinking about apps that were once heavy hitters, but now unfairly seem to be somewhat overlooked.
My nominee is NLog MIDI Synth.
The sound engine is very good.
The controls provide access to so many parameters.
The layout is deep, but intuitive.
I use it as a fantastic workhorse for storing and playing MIDI files.
It needs more love.
What's yours?

I actually redownloaded that for kicks the other night when browsing my purchases. Haven't re-opened yet, though.
I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
Funkbox.
+1
Works great with BopPad out of the box. Important, because BopPad had no local preset switching.
NLog MIDI was my favorite iOS app for a long time. Loved it. Still do actually but I have newer apps demanding my attention. What was the previous name? Just NLog Synth or something.
That was the first synth app I discovered that seemed like a well developed instrument with lots of options, way more than just a basic toy synth.
Don't know if it was ever famous....but Werkbench! Love sitting in front of a mic and a bunch of random things, and firing this baby up...intant sampling! Really good with my percussion player involved as well... Add a sprinkle of delay and we've had some fantastic polyrhythmic madness with it. Only downside is that it's Audiobus compatibility seems broken on Air2 10.3.3...
Sample Wiz
Xewton Music Studio. This thing was considered the number one music creation app and has since fallen into near obscurity.
To me, it's still one helluva sketch pad with a great sampler. Okay, so it's not as robust as BM3, but Music Studo comes with great sounds already installed to get you started. You can also make your own instruments with its flexible sampler, bounce out stems to import into BM3, and many other great features. Its FX structure has changed to be far more flexible thank goodness. I like the fact its GUI is pretty much still the same, because it's the same thing like putting on a comfy old shoe. I recreated this track with Xewton Music Studio...
Best of all, Xewton keeps it updated and has many future updates planned, so for sure you should check it out if you don't have it.
ALSO, where would we be without Nanostudio 1, the original? Figured that one should get a mention too, and I'm looking forward to Nanostudio 2.
yup Xewton is rock solid,, does not have too many bells and whistles like Cubasis ( which is a lot more $)....
But i always find it well implemented and bug free ( 0ne the few apps that has never crashed on me)...
what I dont like about is is the piano roll editor.
technoBox 1 and 2
Rebirth
Not sure if there's any truth in the rumour that Roland "requested" propellor heads "drop" Rebirth
I think that was an official statement from Propellerheads, so it's more than just a rumour
.. not that it had been for like 40 years or so
I Am Sampler. Not the pro sampler folks around here are often looking for but awfully fun and surprisingly musical. Alas, pretty sure it's on the iOS 11 death list.
Holderness Media's EchoPad
Absolutely.
Hate the graphics, love the functionality.
Sampletoy
Looks great, and have just downloaded it.
Will keep it on the imminent death by iOS 11 iPad.
Thanks for the heads up.
While on the topic of toys who remembers Drum Toy
DrumStudio, Cotracks and certainly Nlog, which reminds me I haven't checked the AU version in Logic for a while.
And talking about toys, this one was also interesting & fun: Soundythingie. Amongst others used by the Gorillaz
Bebot...
Sampletank, iGrand, iElectric, Jordantron and Selene Redux. Without AU they just don't fit in anymore
I don't quite understand that approach, but then again, I play cigar box guitars in addition to my "real" guitars.
Looks fun for a buck.
I have also added it to the saved from imminent death by iOS 11 iPad.
At this point I plan to maintain my Air 2 as an iOS 10.X sanctuary for the once famous: iSequence, Electrify NXT, studioHD, SynthX, Molten Drum, PraxisBeats, Alchemy, miniDrum Pro, metaDJ, iYM2151...
What is this scandalous matter as regards once famous?
Digs in the dresser for the bowtie to decry the insult to bebot...
Bebot and Nanostudio would get my vote.
Bebot will always stand as a heavy hitter, the epitome of fingering iOS surfaces in such a way as to invoke sonic delights.
It only would fall into the category of "now unfairly seem to be somewhat overlooked" upon neglect of a wayward iOS musician. I dare not admit to such folly.
