  • and Filtatron stands in the same category as Bebot in my book.

Bebot will always stand as a heavy hitter, the epitome of fingering iOS surfaces in such a way as to invoke sonic delights.

It only would fall into the category of "now unfairly seem to be somewhat overlooked" upon neglect of a wayward iOS musician. I dare not admit to such folly.

Nor would I break sweet little Bebot's heart with such callousness.

  • You are fine men and true. Mostly.

Sampletank, iGrand, iElectric, Jordantron and Selene Redux. Without AU they just don't fit in anymore :(

I don't quite understand that approach, but then again, I play cigar box guitars in addition to my "real" guitars.

A while back I realised that when mixing IAA apps with AU apps, my setup became far more likely to be unstable. Using IAA apps stand alone they are fine, but I often found problems when used as IAA within hosts.

This became a problem, as the more time I spend resetting up after a fail, the less fun I was having making music. Once the fun goes, why bother? So I'm culling anything that holds the fun back and while I love the sounds of the mentioned apps, as IAA apps, they had to go!

Obviously as we all use our apps differently to some degree, your mileage may vary. Have fun with those cigar boxes - all options and styles are valid.

Same here! But of late I've decided to have some fun, playing many of my favorite non-AU iOS instruments live into my desktop DAW using inter-device audio. It's actually brought many of them back into play for me (Nave, Thor, Synthmaster), in addition to others on this list.

I guess my once-famous app would be Looptical. I loved it's quirky 'lay it down in real time then mangle it' vibe. :)

Agree apps like Bebot and Sampletoy are also really made for small screen, that is everything is normal touchable what a difference with, although outstanding apps like iDensity or Fieldscraper that are in my eyes totally idiotic on smaller screens.

Ahhh...that makes sense. I also hate anything that kills the fun/creativity flow.

  • My vote goes to Hammerhead drum machine. When it was released, it was the 1st "real" drum machine on iOS. I was surprised and a bit disappointed it never matured.

  • Once upon a time there was Earhoof and Birdstepper... anybody still use?

I think that guy might still be around making new and great apps..

  • Weird how many of these apps are only a couple of years old. Times change quickly in iOS land...

Totally. Brambos almost single-handedly legitimized AUs on iOS.

Because here in the ios music world the NEXT BEST THING is THE NEXT BEST THING.

History repeats itself here like a bad disco loop.

  • Soundprism Electro. Love playing the filter on the built in sounds. And last but not least, ikaossilator. One of the greats for some vigorous surface fingering.
