  • Here is my demo, tutorial thing, I hope you all enjoy the mad AUM session that starts around the 9 minute mark

  • Cool, it's a great app this, creates very interesting patterns easily when layering in AUM.

Is there a way to copy and paste an individual node setting? That would be useful.
Also when the sequence is playing it's not easy to see which node you've selected, maybe select should be a unique colour. I know it's a ring around the inner node but....

Good stuff Chris, been having fun with this regardless.

Me too. Lots of fun too. @Chris_Randall I think if you are terribly stupid my definition of terribly stupid might be off, or that it isn't looking good for the rest of us on the old scale. :)

Mmmmm....fluffy. So looking forward to a nice juicy burger and BM3 on the couch. This is the best.

  • clicked to buy it on my phone, but it wouldn’t let me , because it’s only available on iPad :neutral .are there any plans for it to come to iphone? It may be small on a regular size iphone. but I think would be fine on a iphone plus.

I imagine you guys are getting used to my honesty, so here's another dose for you, and I hope it doesn't piss too many of you off:

I have all the usage numbers in front of me, provided by iTunes Connect, and I know that, despite the people that write in this thread otherwise, the vast majority of you that actually instance our products in sessions (and yes, we can see when that happens, and what device you do it on) use them on full-sized iPads. So if a product is still moderately useful on iPhone without changing anything specifically for that format, we release it for iPhone as well. But once it gets to where it's not really usable (the border being Replicant 2, which is right on the edge) we have to exhibit some tough love.

If our iOS line gets to the point where we can hire someone to deal with it exclusively, you'll see more iOS-specific stuff. But until that magical time occurs, we can't diverge too much from the desktop products.

  • Once you start using the individual FM send/rec and AM send/receive to modulate the other neurons things start getting pretty freaky... in a good way. Then, load it up into BM3 start automating stuff. Looks like everything is pretty much available to automate. Sweet :)

  • One question, does the Axon 2 have Ableton Link.
    Thanks in forehand.

bummer , but i understand. Oh well. i’ll probably buy it anyway. it’s pretty hard to resist getting your apps. keep up the great work!

I know that feeling. You are not alone in the dark MonzoPro! My 9 year old autistic son screamed for attention/help when I tried layR for the first time and I tell you my head got really messed up(not literally).

Sorry to hear that, I'll have to avoid that one!

Don't think so, but it sync's nicely with other apps as an AU in AUM.

Actually that's the selling point for me - that you can run multiple instances of the app - including the sequencer, so you can build up some complex rhythms (see Doug's vid). Throw in a Ripplemaker and Troublemaker and you've got a whole track going.

Not keen on some of the controls - bit fiddly and small, even on an Air 2, and when trying to connect 'nodes' I have to tap them several times to get them to link up. Or maybe it's my fingers. It also bombs out in AUM in IAA mode for me, fortunately AU works perfectly.

It's not as jammable and fun as I'd expected, due to the above (though maybe more practice will help speed things up), but it's definitely capable of producing some very usable rhythmic stuff so it'll definitely get some use from me, and I'm looking forward to the MIDI fix.

One wishlist item: if ever there was an app crying out for a Randomise button it's this one....

  • Yeah agree, randomiser would be nice for each instrument and also for the connections

  • Currently finding it somewhat confusing in terms of getting it to produce something similar to what's in my head....whilst the presets are sounding great. Off to peruse the manual.

  • Axon is getting some flak on the iOS Musicians FB group. Personally, I like it. I think it can be used to create some really interesting layers. I would love to see a random function though.

  • I love it as well. layering multiple au instances up in AUM is fantastic. I am really excited for the Midi out big to be squashed, in the next update, so I can start triggering other apps with it.

I've tried joining that several times but can't seem to get in - what are they saying?

I can see how some people would be frustrated - the look of the app seems to suggest that it lends itself to a randonly generated, jamming tool. But it's anything but this - it takes a long time to build up a rhythm, and getting anything other than blips and clicks from the audio generator takes work and patience. You can't save preset sounds either.

As I've said above, needs some sort of random function to speed up rhythm creation and make jamming a bit more fun, and bigger editing tools - there's a lot of wasted space on the UI that could be used more effectively. Again bigger sliders would make editing while jamming less risky.

It's one saving grace is multiple sequencers in AUM as an AU. Slipping a couple of instances in along with Egoist or some Brambos apps, really adds a bit of oomph to the overall rhythm. Again though, lack of easy live tweaking means it's a very static affair.

Dunno, want to love it but I can't, but hey, it was six quid.

  • Still wrapping my head around Axon. I think I need to stop trying to program it like every other drum machine, and instead let the eccentricities of the sequencer inspire me. I do love the sound of harsh FM drums.

I hadn't even thought of loading multiple instances in AUM, will be experimenting with that tonight.

  • Love the idea of this app. Bit of a challenge coaxing sounds when you're not using presets, but that shouldn't stop anyone. Forces you to think differently which is cool.

One thing to note is that Axon isn't really the best for jamming over a loop (clip sequencer in BM3, looped points in Cubasis, etc.) because of the experimental rhythms. When the start point gets re-triggered, things get awkward pretty quickly. :D Definitely best in an open, linear environment.

I will say I have a problem clicking nodes and moving sliders even on my iPad 9.7 :o

I think the gist of the it is that the sequencing is not as random or complex as desired and that the synth sounds are not as high quality or varied as some would like. I agree on both counts but still think it is worth the purchase and MIDI out will go a long way to varying up the sounds.

  • Agreed. when this gets AUv3 midi out then it will really take off as layering this in multiple ways is the best thing about this for me.

Can we get variable reduction and midi-learn on the drawn reciprocation dingle arm? It would be nice to have some control over the sinusoidal depleneration reduction in some cases.

Yeah I'd agree with that too.

I doubt it'll get any feature updates, but it'd be good if it had some of the live 'jammability' of other drum apps - such as SeekBeats, ElasticDrums, Patterning, Brambos apps etc.

Saying all that I've enjoyed making a few presets.

Make sure you have your chat enabled so that Linda (group admin) can message you. Standard procedure. Keeps the bots and the spammers out. She normally asks some simple question or two (like "what is your fave iOS synth?" or similar) just to ensure people at least have some clue of iOS music making.

Have to say I love this app. Love the VST too, it’s been a go to instrument for me ever since version 1 dropped.

It does take time to program. And I find that saving presets at stages during the process can be useful.

I must agree that the touch targets (or whatever you call them) feel a bit tricky to hit on the interface sometimes.

Also @Chris_Randall - if you are listening, I would love an option that meant that when you did something on the mixer: move a fader or mute or solo, the focus switched to that channel on the sequencer nodes and voice. I think it would need to be optional behaviour as it might not suit all use cases. But I would find it invaluable (I think others might too)

    +1

  • I think one thing which would also improve the app is alternate behaviours for the nodes which you could select. But I am enjoying it a lot myself compared to others it seems.
