Yeah I was presuming he meant a reasonable assessment of the technical skills involved. Fact is great songs are written by great song writers, which is an altogether different skill and is much more than whatever technical skills required.

So yeah, if he meant that almost intangible qualities of song writing skills, I'm out too lol

    My favorite song these days...
    Dumb All Over

  • Jingle bells

  • @JohnnyGoodyear I just discovered M Ward, thought you might like his stuff.

Oh yes, what a song. Just when we all thought Roger Waters could never equal Dark Side of the Moon, along came The Wall, including this masterpiece.

  • Here's one I really respect the writing of, now, but had never bothered deeply listening to as I couldn't stand it as a commonplace piece of music. You'll recognise these lyrics, but you might not have felt the lyrical message:

A few stolen moments is all that we share
You've got your family and they need you there
Though I've tried to resist being last on your list
But no other man's gonna do
So I'm saving all my love for you
It's not very easy living all alone
My friends try and tell me find a man of my own
But each time I try I just break down and cry
'Cause I'd rather be home feeling blue
So I'm saving all my love for you
You used to tell me we'd run away together
Love gives you the right to be free
You said be patient just wait a little longer
But that's just an old fantasy
I've got to get ready just a few minutes more
Gonna get that old feeling when you walk through that door
'Cause tonight is the night for feeling alright
We'll be making love the whole night through
So I'm saving all my love for you
Yes I'm saving all my love
Yes I'm saving all my love for you

I mean, this is a bit brutal, isn't it? I'm not taking sides here, but you can see this is heading for trouble.

It's a true sentiment and one that's not really expressed anymore, either out of fear or due to a shift in expected values.

It is what I would class as an important song, one that earns its space. Another important one, while we're on that line of thought, and another that I'd wish I could write, but perhaps I could never, as a man, is this one

What's the sense in sharing this one and only life
Ending up just another lost and lonely wife
    You count up the years
And they will be filled with tears

Love only breaks up to start over again
    You'll get the babies
But you won't have your man
While he is busy loving every woman that he can, uh-huh

    Say I'm gonna leave
    A hundred times a day
    It's easier said than done
When you just can't break away
    (Just can't break away)

    Oh, young hearts run free
    They'll never be hung up
Hung up like my man and me
    My man and me

    Ooh, young hearts
    To yourself be true
Don't be no fool when love really don't love you
    Don't love you

It's high time now, just one crack at life
Who wants to live in trouble and strife
My mind must be free to learn all I can about me, mmm

I'm gonna love me for the rest of my days
Encourage the babies every time they say
Self preservation is what's really going on today

    … Etc.

It sounds so happy and dancy and upbeat when you hear the song, doesn't it. Yet it is caustically angry and painful.

Jeez... wow, had no idea this was anything but a sappy song.

Nowhere in my capability to record or perform except in a technical sense, or even to capture the essence of. Not in the style I normally write either. But it's in my heart somewhere if that counts for anything...

  • I love my Bowie and my adoration of the Beatles is probably pathological, but of all the songs I wish I'd written that technically I could have written, this, the greatest single of all time IMHO, is unbothered by any competition...

Sorry RUST(i)K, I originally had Ding Dong the Witch is dead but my afterthought was how stupid. If there was one song I wish I could have written is one of my all time favorites..Among Angels by Kate Bush. Every time I listen I'm brought to tears.

  • Been listening to this album(side 1) a lot lately. Not tired of it yet.

    A wizened 25.

  • That's easy: White Christmas by Bing Chrosby… highest gross revenues of all time.

Any time, any genre, any artist. But, and it's a big but…
You have to have honestly been able to have written it and recorded it. It must be within your scope of skill and style and all that stuff. Okay then, a little bit beyond your scope - we'll allow that. Okay then, a little bit more.

Which song do you wish you wrote?

    MOZARTS REQUIEM

  • There are many songs I wish I'd written ahead of this one, but within my scope? If I was very lucky maybe one day...

    Ziggy still sounds futuristic.
