  • I think that if you are chasing that kind of sound, programming your own break won't ever get you really there, it will always miss that bit of character, bleeds of other instrument, that vocal hook at the end that won't ever make it to the final version of the tune but it actually drove the entire composition and so on. The tips in this thread are great but still the very point of the genre was a great, genre crossing musical culture.

yeah, instead of sampling somebody else’s stuff. I was thinking of just jamming on some breakbeats while recording, and then using the slice
up method like in that video. who knows how well it will work,
but it sounds like a fun process

  • So I took up this challenge last night...

I used Future Drummer to get the regular Kick, Snare and Hats...the used Funk Drummer for the groovy hats and snare...I then used Ruimaker's sequencer to get the off beat kicks....
I was able to mess with the patterns until i found something that worked, it was actually very easy, I found this method to be very similar to trying to match up different drum loops.....
I took these patterns and entered 1 bar of each (2 bars for the funkier part) into Groovebox onto 3 separate drum tracks (i could have recorded the MIDI in, and probably should have done, and will do in the future, to get the added JAM factor from the Luiz Martinez apps using 8 bar patterns)...I could also have just left the patterns in the source apps...but wanted to have less app switching when jamming.
I then added Bass and one synth in Groovebox, some samples using blocs wave...and recorded in AUM, whole thing took about 1 hour...
Here is the result, not polished just trying out the process, and did a final "Jam" with the patterns...I could have maybe 'pushed the tempo' a bit more
Some glitching when app switching, can't have it all I suppose....

Next step..fine tuning the sounds to get the nastiness :naughty:

Thanks @eross for starting this thread...and thanks to all who contributed, this has helped me get over a hurdle I have had for a while now.

Yeah, this is awesome. Your tune turned out really nice. Very Prodigy.
I love that people are challenging themselves on here lately, and pushing themselves to be creative in ways they had never thought of before. So cool!

Nice track, very funky. I think in a way the possibilities are almost endless, you can use drum apps, loops, samples, and mash the whole thing up to create new beats.

One thing I've really enjoyed from the thread is watching the sheer creativity of the sampling in the videos posted. Liam Howlett is a seriously creative guy, the way he mashed and mangled sounds was really cool.

Cheers dude, will be using this to improve my bottom end movement for my next SOTMC entry ;) Your explanation of syncopation really helped :)
Agree on the sampling and creativity, when you see it done it looks so simple....but how in the world do these guys find these samples and think, ahh I know if I slow that and pitch it, add some distortion it will sit perfectly....or having a tune part done and thinking, That part from such and such a track or sample cd would fit perfectly here....or was it all by complete accident and just browsing/messing with stuff.......amazing!

Exactly, it’s not just finding a cool sample and triggering it. There are so many things that go into making songs like the Prodigy. There is so much composition and arranging and mixing going on. It is definatly an art form that is not as appreciated as it should be. It takes a ton of forethought and vision to build a song in this style. One of the greates bands ever in my opinion.

I think they just mess around with stuff until something clicks. For the last couple of months I've been pulling vocal samples into BM3 and messing them up until I find something cool (which then may or may not end up in a track). It's a lot of experimentation, and most of it ends up by the wayside, but occasionally some cool new sounds emerge.

After watching this, seems it is not always a quick process, and memory and inspiration from all sorts plays it part

Man he's got some old kit there.....and he makes really good use of it too.

There is an app for that.

It takes some time getting used to it
But it’s still my favorite loop twister

That’s true. I always forget I have the app, and the. I rediscover it and always have a blast. I think it’s time to revisit it again. Thanks for the reminder

We have poison 202 for Prodigy style synth sounds , but what about drums? what apps would be the best for writing drum beats like the Prodigy? I love their huge break beat style drums, but have no idea how to program something like that. Anyone know of any resources out there of how to make tunes like the Prodigy?

Buy Audiocopy IAP (several of them) and use the single shots to make loops.

I can check what IAP if you want me to.

  • I found this and signed up for it, and ha e really learned a lot about how to make music like the Prodigy. $13 for a month worth of tutorials. So far I feel like I’ve got more than my money’s worth of music education. Check it out guys. https://www.sonicacademy.com/courses/synth-punk-in-ableton-live
