App Store Mess

Apple seem to have shot themselves in both feet, in the new Apo Store. Firstly, by withdrawing the Wish List, which is an inconvenience, but more seriously by messing up the Review section.

Now, if we want to see what others make of an app, there is absolutely no way to bring up the latest reviews. Indeed, some of those I’m seeing are 2 years old. Write a new up to date review to help a great developer, and tell others why something is good - or occasionally why it sucks - and it vanishes into the system. Sometimes it will pop up the next day, other times it’s just gone never to be seen again. Yet, strangely, updating a previously written review does bring it to the top. But that doesn’t mean it is fixed there until someone else writes another review.

I am surely not alone in wanting to write and read up to date reviews, and store details of apps for future consideration. So hopefully Apple will adjust things back to being both useful and accessible.

  • It took me 10 mins last night just to find how to browse just music apps....this was a couple of taps in the previous version.

  • I really like the new App Store - is this a problem with the App Store or a problem with change in general?

Advertising the change perhaps...changing it without a map of what you used to do compared to what you do now is not helpful, although it is a test of how intuitive the new version is.

  • The best and most helpful reviews for music apps are found here on this forum. But I guess that doesn't help the Devs in getting their apps to the general public who might not know of this great place.

No, the ability to see music apps as a category is more difficult as you have to menu dive whereas before it was straight forward. Being able to see reviews for the current version of the app versus previous versions was a useful way to see and report issues or lack of issues when an app was updated. Lumping them all together further weakens the value of App Store reviews.

  • Every category should have an option to be displayed and categorized the way games are in the App Store. We should be able to have settings in the App Store app so that we can feature categories we have an interest in and when we do searches be able to restrict them to a specific category and/or sub-category.

I noticed I can't download purchased iPad apps to my phone via the store now - the sneaky so and so's try and get me to pay again. Noticed this with the FluxPad update, and again when I went to install Ripplemaker on the phone. I now have to go to the Purchased Apps section to find and download them there. Before the update there'd be a download icon on the store itself.

I noticed this as well, if you don’t go to purchased apps then it tries to charge you again!

It's quite hidden but tap on your 'icon' to the right' (account) and then tap on purchased.
There you can show 'all' or 'not on this device' just as before.

That really is fucked!!! But can you purchase an item that you already purchased again? Think there some brake or mechanisme to prevent this built in the AppStore. btw I'm still on 10.3.3 so don't have this problem :)

Yeah I found that, but on the iPhone it’s quite hidden.

The issue is - instead of a download link next to the app, the price/buy button is displayed.

This made me think the FluXPad iPhone version was separate, and I had to buy it again. I checked here, no-one mentioned this so I rummaged through the purchased app section and found it.

  • It's not just the cosmetic changes, updates and downloads for other versions of iOS are screwed up at times. So the upheaval of the AppStore isn't just messed up on iOS 11.

  • The logic behind removing the wishlist is beyond me. I wished for them shits, so chances are I was going to buy them at some point. Perhaps they assumed everyone’s lists were full of old / incompatible apps...I don’t know. But it was damn convenient. Give it back.

That 'glitch' has been present in AppStore for ages when doing a search.(I've had it since iOS7 or so).
When you actually try to buy it it says it's already been purchased and will be downloaded for free...

I think this is simply some kind of 'optimisation thing'. Instead of the Appstore checking each item every time it's show against the users purchase-history it just fetches the price.

It’s more than a glitch if it makes me think I don’t own the app, and don’t try to download it to see if I’m charged or not - it’s a usability bug.

Don’t remember seeing it before but I’ll take your word for it - sounds like they’re in no rush to fix it though, a bit like the rotation bug.

And was so before IOS 11. I came across it when looking for a more sophisticated notes app. I’d settled on Notability, and finally clicked buy....only to discover I’d actually bought a very early version, years ago, and forgotten. The App Store remembered, even though the price was displayed. I was not charged again.

True, and on YouTube. What a pity Apple have taken this road. No problem with change - Oscar - but change is only good if it is an improvement.

Yepp, I've been sending Apple constructive feedback multiple times during the years without much luck...

I seldom bump into the 'rotation bug' but when I do I just shake my iPad a bit and it usually sorts it self out.
To me it feels more like an issue with the 'gyroscope' as my iPad is sometimes also slow to react to rotation.

  • The purchased apps list, has been reformatted for the iPhone, all the screen estate of an iPad and they stick the list into that crazy pop up, it now will take me a week to scroll through that thing.

Doesn’t work for me, I have to switch it off for a bit. Gets worse when a new iOS update has arrived.

Interestingly the Store shows purchased apps for download, so it is checking your account, but doesn’t show if it’s a universal app that hasn’t been downloaded.

As I’ve been saying for a while, everything is now subservient to that bloody phone.

There is no way to see an app's In-App purchases and their prices now, except when developers explicitly set them to "Promoted" and update them...

  • Apple sold 41.026 million iPhones in Q3, up 2 percent on Q3 2016. It made revenue of $24.846bn from this, an increase of 3 percent from the same quarter last year.

On the face of it at least, iPads - which have been flat or declining for a while - are the stars of this quarter's results, up an impressive 15 percent in unit sales (11.424 million units, compared to 9.950 million). But revenue was up only 2 percent, at $4.969bn.

The difference of $20 BILLION is a figure almost beyond astronomical.

Can’t really argue with any of the complaints on this one. I had several wishlist items I likely would’ve purchased soon, but now I don’t recall what they were.

I’ve never had the issue with the App Store thinking I needed to buy the iPhone version of a universal app before ios11. Had it twice in the last two days, but eventually it showed up as downloadable. Wondering if some of it is just the new Store platform taking time to propagate across all the servers/networks?

Regarding the reviews, I always sorted by most recent. I can see how the new way gives me a good snapshot of how the reviews have looked over the lifespan of the app, but I’d rather have the option to sort by most recent too.

And I agree, change is great if it’s an improvement. For the last couple of years at least, it feels like decisions are being made based more on style than function. As if looking like cool new trendy UI design outweighs the actual functionality.

  • I have to say, if you can't remember what was on your wishlist, you probably don't need to buy it.

Well, then there’s that too. ;) lol

  • FWIW my wishlist was a bunch of things I was really hot for, apparently, but when I returned, I had no idea why I was interested in the first place.

I was able to scroll down on an apps page to the area where it says "in-app purchases" and when I hit the little triangle rollout the in-app purchase list was displayed with prices. Does this not work for all apps?
