  • I could have sworn last night that the minor scale in TJ was different from Aeolian. But you’re right.

A zillion scales but no plain ‘ol Aeolian mode? Easy to add, but odd.

You could spend a life exploring all these scales.

Aeolian Is equivalent to Minor, but yeah I should put it in there in the Modal section for completeness!

  • I see where I got confused now. I switched instruments and didn’t have keep scale on. There’s some other app out there that uses melodic minor but calls it minor. I thought that was what was going on.

So, basically just ignore me. B)

I noticed that all the Indian scales are Carnatic. Would it be possible to add the main Hindustani raga scales as well?

Also, are the Carnatic scales just intonated, or custom intonated in any way? More and more the Indian musicians themselves are seeming to ignore microtuning, but I study in the dhrupad tradition and prefer to keep everything perfectly in tune.

What does TJ do as a midi filter?

Currently it is a filter dedicated to the scale lock feature, so incoming midi notes will be changed to only notes in the currently selected scale in the app. It can use adjacent white keys as input or chromatic input (depending on setting in Prefs->midi control).

Oh man that is so awesome! I am amazed at the number of scales TJ already has, and I just tried it with a scala file I shared from Wilsonic. It seems to work for those too, so now AB has a scala midi filter. I freakin' love ThumbJam!

Does this mean I can send midi controller data through TJ, have it output with midi pitch bend intonation correction for every note in a particular scale, and then send this to another synth? Because that would be frickin awesome.

Also, too bad Wilsonic has no way to be used as a midi controller. Wouldn't it be cool if TJ could implement some of those control interfaces from WIlsonic?

When I tested it I had ScalePlay running a simple pattern in Major then when I put the scala filter on (TJ in midiFX slot), I could definitely hear then tune change character to match the scale from Wilsonic. I had this output to Poison-202.

So while it sounded like it was picking up the character of the scale, I didn't actually check pitches or anything. Also I need to experiment more to see how well the regular notes get remapped to partials, or if it is skipping a lot of the "in-between" notes.

I just need a good source for the Hindustani raga scales, please feel free to recommend one!

And no, the Carnatic scales are not intonated for the reason you mentioned. You'll have to make your own custom scales right now if you want them to be. Sorry about that!

Have you noticed that Samvada also allows you to load a number of Indian scales directly into ThumbJam? A meeting of two great apps.
Ooops...it's actually on the webpage for Samvada/Iotic.

  • Literally el oh elled at "1.6". These is easily 4.0 (6.7?) for most every other maker of anything. 1.6 million thank yous, Jesse.

  • I'd crawl over hot coals for a saturation/distortion effect in Thumbjam. Currently I have to use additional plugins/apps via AUM, but that's slower for changing presets and relies on perfect state saving for the entire chain. In my experience, state saving multiple apps is unreliable, mostly due to flaky support for state saving in some apps.

Apps come and go on my iPad but TJ never leaves. A stalwart of utility and creativity.
