  • 40 years old here. Good times.

  • We can also afford iPads @commonstookie. :)

@dwarman the qx-1 was an 8 track sequencer with 8 discreet midi outs. A beast but super solid.

@busker will check it out when I have headphones. Agreed that DM hasn't done anything interesting in a long while. They're just not the same without Alan Wilder. I still remember a video with him explaining how he spread samples across the keyboard in the Emulator II for playing live and me getting totally chubbed.

Thanks again for all the birthday wishes everyone. Had a great day.

  • Hello all,

The average age of this thread is 46, yes I did the math :D.
I am 28 I started at age 4 in the Yamaha music school playing the piano and the organ I had a Yamaha ME 50 Stage organ that my parents bought when I was just 5... I guess does where my first recordings on the integrated cartridge. It is still at my parents house, and it still works like new. I play it every time I go visit.

    Best regards,
    GN

  • That 'dynamic voice allocation' DM video:

The sample sets were auctioned off a couple of years. Here's someone going through the live set samples:

  • Just turned 53. Started playing the trumpet in school/marching band, where I arranged music for the band to play; went to art school during the 80's & my connections with the school got me a job for a multimedia company there, creating CD-ROM games & other interactive media. Here I got my first real synth (Roland XP-50) & composed music for various projects. The biggest music project I took on was 'Stone Trek', my animated 'Star Trek/Flintstones' parody show... imagine mixing the themes from those two shows into one tune - Done! I got into making a lot of MIDI files of some of my favorite tunes & gigging around a little with the XP-50, & I even had a Roland PMA-5 at one time! I have dived into the iOS music world because I can & because it seems to be a relatively inexpensive way to outfit oneself for music creation.

  • 56 very soon, but like most blokes have never really grown up

  • 55 here...

  • I will be 53 next Tuesday. I have been a guitar player since I was 8 and several years ago I picked up a shiny new Korg Triton LE workstation to make backing tracks, which I still have. Then I added a Korg M50, with Stephan Kay's Karma software which I am still in love with and it is my primary tool for making beats and backing tracks. Last winter I picked up a Novation MiniNova synth which is a whole lot of fun to work with also. Then I got very sick last spring and was in the hospital for almost four weeks , two weeks almost in ICU, and my family bought me an Ipad, and I have been spending a lot of time downloading way to many apps and having way to much fun. I am still trying to decide what I want for my b'day next week. Was thinking of an audio interface to record the korg and the MiniNova into cubasis with, but have not decided for sure yet. Anyway as I have mentioned on other threads I really find the Korg workstation to be king for making music but Animoog, Nave, ISEM, IElectribe, DM1 and lord knows how many other apps really add a lot to my work I am finding. I could never afford all of these synths in hardware form and that is what I love most about the iPad/ I also love the community here at the Audiobus forum and learning from all of you friendly people. Thanks to all of my fellow forum members and to Audiobus for giving us their app and a nice place to share our knowledge. Audiobus is no doubt my most used app by the way.

  • Jeez if this trend continues, pretty soon they'll need a wheelchair lift on the Audiobus to accommodate all you geezers ;-).

Just turned 30 a month ago to the day. started as a bassist at a young age, then switched to drums, then decided I wanted a more melodic role as a musician and picked up the piano. In 1999 I bought Reason and an early version of ableton Live and never looked back. Focused a lot on sample-based work between 2000-2005 before switching back to live playing and sequencing.

first synth: well it was a groovebox, the Roland MC-303. I just fixed it up the other day and became amazed at the quality of the 808 and 909 drumkits... blew FunkBox and DM1 out of the water.

Next step for me is modular synthesis.

Seb and Mike have you looked into taking out life insurance policies on your customer base?

  • I got older since this thread started...

  • Still 49,same as the @soundtestroom,50 in december;)

  • Turned 40 in November... :)

  • I'm 40 and i'm lovin' it!

  • @PaulB me too. I'm now 66.

  • This is such a compelling thread to read. It even made me feel young at 33 which I haven't had for a while. I'm also pretty new to synths - always been a guitarist. Did a bit of gigging and recording in my early 20s but never entered the world of synth or midi until I discovered NanoStudio on my iPhone. I don't post too often but I am here everyday and because of this forum I now have an iPad with a varied selection of music apps and an ever increasing dent in my wallet. Getting married in a few months too so really should avoid this place and stop convincing myself I need new apps

  • Or get you fiancé hooked on apps too!

BTW, I started a poll on a separate thread, thinking it would be interesting to see the actual percentages across age groups.

  • Ha, I don't think she realises that music apps generally arent 69p like the apps she buys, hence why she cant find out about this forum until the wedding is fully paid or I'm in trouble.

Oh I saw the poll earlier, my votes in

  • 41 here. Always assumed I was one of the older folks. This thread has been a real eye opener.

Does explain one thing though.. Last week I showed my 60 yr old uncle the ipad and all the music apps. He was more excited by it than anyone else I've ever shown. I predict he will have an ipad and be on this forum within he month :)

  • Your dirty secret is safe with us @noisyninja ;-)

I didn't realize that a poll post doesn't bubble to the top when someone votes...only if a comment is added.

  • 38 here. Between this forum and the acoustic guitar forums I've been visiting recently, I'm feeling positively young :)

  • @funjunkie27 I didn't realize that either. We'll have to start "bumping" polls to make sure they are seen.

  • I'm with @Tarekith. Thought last time I posted in this thread I think I was 37.

  • Just did @Audiojunkie. Good idea.

  • Just voted! :-)

  • 43 here. 27 of them drumming. Timex sinclair -> c64 -> atari st -> pc -> ipad
Pretty much been making music with computers for ever so I'm really at ease as far as getting into anything. Also play some keyboards and trumpet.

  • I had a Vic20 a C64, I used Amiga...but the love for music it come handling HiFi equipment and later Car Hifi. Sadly, school & work, beside the "passive" world of HiFi, I could not get involved in music, and I mean create music....Couple of years ago, now settled with Family, I finally got a guitar .... and this beautiful journey started. Since then I am learning bass, after I started drums, and after ethno percusions, cajon...in the last few months it was time for keyboard...I am following lessons online for synth...and this fantatic forum is making me fill my iPad with great apps. I do not have time at night to do everything that I d like to do...many time I fell asleep on a guitar, last night while playing with DM1 on the bed the iPad fell on me :) although, even if I can do 0.0000001% of what I am supposed to do, I feel happy every time I stroke a note, I play a chord, or I discover a sound .... I know I will never be good at any instrument, but I am learning so much and bottom line that what is count ..... and particularly, I want to give an example to my son hopping that he will start this beautiful journey before than I did ..... now I gotta go, just arrived a pack with my "first" monitors speaker, I have to install them :)
