I use addictive mainly for FM sounds. The FM part was a most welcome addition with the last major update
VirSyn describes it as a wavetable synth in both the app store description and the manual, but since it deals with partials it is additive. The two are not necessarily mutually exclusive, but I'm not sure what goes on under the hood of Addictive.
OK, so I sprung for it. Agree with the sounds - it's Addictive Synth * 2 with the Animoog-ish vector path thrown in.
But it shares the same MIDI issues with Addictive. Channel selection only, not port selection, so it operated in port promiscuous mode only. And (apparently) no CC assignments or learn. I may have some luck fooling it with MidiBridge, but it shows up there as "Addictive Synth", not as "Cube Synth", and when I double-tap it Addictive Synth is opened, not Cube.
CUBE SYNTH....getting some great sounds from this...very happy.
One thing though....how do I find what are the 4 currently selected sound sources?
When I click on any of the A,B,C,D buttons and then 'tools'....there are 4 sublists of sources, but when exploring these, none of them are highlighted or have a tick...no indication of which is currently being used.
Is this info displayed elsewhere?
Cheers.
@SpookyZoo - if it is I haven't found it either. Ran into that problem last night, but I didn't dig into the manual to check so maybe there or maybe it says somewhere on the ENV screen
There are some awesome Bass sounds in The Cube.
Particularly love the arp. Not since FM8 have I had as much fun with random patterns. Just wish there was a midi out or some way to use the arp with my other synths. If anyone knows a way that would be much appreciated.
@Eyedol....from the manual (JMSexton links above)
You probably mean in real time...but if not....
Recording starts after a count-in of one bar indicated by the metronome and stops with the next tap on “REC”. Start the recording with a tap on the “Record” button.
The recorded audio is saved in a wave file with the preset name set as default file name. You can access the the files in the iTunes File sharing folder for Cube Synth.
In addition the midi note on/off information coming from playing the onscreen or external keyboard is recorded into a file with the same name and the file extension “.mid”. If the arpeggiator is active the notes from the arpeggiator are recorded in the MIDI file.
This help?
Thanks - didn't realise the midi information got saved. But yeah - I was after a real-time solution, particularly to use it as a midi controller in my DAW. Appreciate your suggestions though. Hopefully they might add midi out in a future update.
@SpookyZoo - I think the reason you don't see any sound source highlighted is that the sound source is potentially nothing in the menu. The sound source is whatever happens to be drawn on the levels screen, which is a map of which partials comprise the sound, and their levels. The submenus allow you to reset the levels map to about 5 well known wave forms, but from there, you can start drawing on that screen and turn them into whatever spectral content you want to.
Edit: PS - the four sub menus (I.e. vocal, natural, etc.) actually apply to the filter tab and select different filter configurations (which can also be modified by drawing on them). The only one that applies to the sound source is the waveform menu.
Try deselecting 'Q' and playing the onscreen keyboard as this allows you to slide up/down, left/right. From the manual...
• Pitch bending is done with moving the fingers left/right. ( if “Q” is not set )
• Modulation wheel is simulated by moving fingers up/down.
Hi @SuperNiCd, thanks for your reply. You are right of course, both in that once parameters are moved that sound ceases to be a preset, and also that I was meaning the filter sources not waveforms.
I would still like some kind of visual reference that if it's a preset of some kind I am modifying, then that original preset can be identified somehow.
Cheers
Yep, I hear you, @SpookyZoo. I was kind of hunting for this too when I was first experimenting with Addictive. Doubt we'll ever see that added, though. On the bright side, it's pretty easy to memorize and recognize the 5 standard wave presets, and it's actually kind of helpful to do so for synthesis theory in general.
Or just look at the waveforms and kind of memorize the pictures - you can get a pretty good idea which one they started with. Well, maybe. Since it's pretty easy to completely change the spectral content with one swipe of the finger. :-) But I guess you could recognize them if they stuck with just a basic waveform, at any rate.
Here's an interesting read that has the frequency plots for common waveforms laid out nicely:
http://beausievers.com/synth/synthbasics/
The beauty of this and Addictive is that you don't have to choose a basic waveform and then try to filter it into what you want. You can just draw it!
Thanks again @SuperNiCd, I am fairly familiar with the theory, but always great to have various links for to go back on. As an aside I like this guys explanations on sound and envelopes....http://rhordijk.home.xs4all.nl/G2Pages/BasicPrinciples.htm
It was actually the loss of a patch where I had used a few of the filter sources that caused my post.... not so easy to recognise those.
Cheers
By the way, dont know about Cube but Addictive Synth is affected by an iOS7 exclusiv so called"keyboard bug".Its not possible to save own arp/seq presets because the keyboard just don't show up and therefore its not possible to choose a name for a new preset.Would somebody mind to check this in Cube?Would test it by myself but need a giftcard first
It's not the only app,i have this problem with the wonderful Xcom game as well and i read about more apps in the internet.
@SpookyZoo - yep, undo with multiple levels would be SUPER helpful in this and addictive! Thanks for the link! Always helpful to have it explained different ways.
@Crabman no such problems with this app.
@Crabman Addictive keyboard workin ok here.
@DaveMagoo:Just to make it clear:I'm NOT talking about the piano keys,i'm talking about the iOS keyboard to type (arp preset)names in.Thanks for testing.
@crabman - I believe you... I can't get the keyboard for assigning midi numbers in iDensity anymore either. Weird little things with 7, I'm fully expecting to find more.
Yes the keyboard pops up and let's me enter text when I want to save/rename a preset or arp etc...wierd
Ipad 4 here so may depend on hardware ? Lots of little glitches here and there though....IOS 7.0.2
Ipad 4 with 7.0.I can use the keyboard to save sound presets but no arp presets.Although No glitches, everything is smooth (with or without audiobus).Funny
I just been tinkering and the arp preset save is very limited I only have the ability to overwrite and rename an existing preset and not save a new one though which is strange.
Where as the preset save gives lots more options, save as, save, copy, paste, init, refresh....strange
The typing keyboard shows OK for me too in Addictive Synth to name and save my own presets
Kind regards

SOUND presets or ARP presets? ;-) First one works for me,second don't.It's a pity,i use addictive in 90% percent with its own sequencer.
@smeeeth on the right of numbers of controls there is a little double arrow, if you click on it compare a keyboard down for insert your value...
I know about the little double arrow, and it used to work. But in ios7 it just freezes the app for me and i have to force quit it.
on my iPad 4 works....what iPad do you have???
Anyone else find it a bit odd (and annoying) not to have the keyboard controls (size, slider, scale menu) on the performance page? Performance page would be the cube/sphere page.
Maybe i need to go spend some time w/the manual, but i'm confused by the 2D page. I can see that hitting a key sends the little green dot across the "track" in the main window, but how do i change that path? I've moved the yellow lines and the nodes to different spots, but when i press a key, the green dot starts from exactly the same spot and the sound is the same.
