Opera pop?
I was thinking earlier about the whole genre of what might be termed operatic pop, but then realised that it half it it would be Jim Steinman, a bit of it would be Freddie Mercury and the rest would be everyone else. Not much of a genre, more a monopoly. But then, I’ve never been a genesis fan so there’s probably a whole bunch I’m blind to (like genesis - never heard of them).
Typically I’m guessing you’d have to have a big arsed grand piano in your living room, with doves and roses and windy curtains and all that, before you can even think of penning the first few notes of such a piece. All the faffing about of connecting, and wiring up and piping through and messing about with the bits and pieces within an ipad would destroy the flow - you’d just end up with disjointed antisocial electronic music, the same as usual. Composing operatic pop wholly on an ipad? Is it even possible?
Anyway. ‘‘Tis Saturday night, beer awaits. The videos.
(Why haven’t we got an ‘indulgence’ or ‘playlist’ category?)

The top classic pop song that wanted to be opera

And before you say it’s just cheese, it is actually quite good. It’s okay to admit that now.
Have always thought that (in our time) the best musicals were opera (or more simply, just that operas were/are musicals...). I think West Side Story made that clear to me. As for Mister Steinman's front man; completely rococo...
And I’d class this in this class

ABBA (quite a lot of ABBA really fits) - I do, etc.
Oh yes, forgot about musicals - although this one isn’t operatic really, but it does feature dancing on four oversized Roli Lightpad Blocks.

I would think that a lot of Klaus Nomi's work would fall under this classification.
Good stuff.
I give up. Tried posting, didn’t work out.
Roy Orbison also.
If you want to get really obscure, there's always Jobriath.
Klaus Nomi was certainly the king. Or interplanetary overlord or whatever.
I reckon this was composed as if it were a stage song (or a film song)

Marshall Hain - Dancing in the City
Kit Hain, bassist and vocalist, is now a children’s book author (as Kit Grindstaff, her married name).
This also, I think, was composed with stage in mind:

Carole Bayer Sager
Mind you, this was composed to be performed, so anything goes, probably.

Hugo Ball - Gadji Beri Bimba
What about Meatloaf? Or Nina Hagen? Maybe even this dude:
Dada

Saturday Night Fever ---->Greek Tragedy ------->Opera
A night at…
Here’s a great, maybe slightly obscure Steinman from the movie Streets of Fire, starring a very young Diane Lane and the always-welcome Rick Moranis.
‘Let the revels begin, let the fire be started
We’re dancin for the reckless and the broken-hearted’
Just a killer refrain
Gotta love this
Based on Craig Wedren's voice:

...but Billy was better at the Pop bit:
...and if you don't have the golden vocal chords, use an fx pedal:
(a bit tenuous that one, sorry!
Yes all that faffing about always kills my opera attempts and thats tragic
Dead Ringer isn’t bad either...
I’ve heard someone call Meat Loaf the Orson Wells of Rock
I like opera, and this guy is like Farinelli... but probably with balls, so he sings in a kind of falsetto.
How’s life at the Factory?
I think this classifies into the list

If you combine pop and opera you get something like Andrew Lloyd Webber, and like him or not, he's been enormously successful. On the rock side, you could argue that many concept albums are only a step away from a staged rock musical and there are some artists who are composing rock musicals for the stage - Clive Nolan springs to mind, although I am sure many here will not have heard of him. Also Arjen Lucassen and his Ayreon projects. And as you mentioned Genesis in your OP, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway was staged quite theatrically when it was first performed!
will.i.am coined it as 'Popera'
Good Idea
The incomparable Bill Nelson.
