App Spendage

edited October 2013 in General App Discussion

Just curious what we all spend on apps and perhaps the developers might find it interesting too. This is not a boasting thread but only to give an idea of how much faith we put into Apple and the developers. Understandable if you would rather not make it public for your spouse or attorney to see :-) .

I try to make it a habit to jot down the name of the app, the amount paid, as well as the discounted price if applicable into a text document in which I later copy/paste into an Excel (or rather the free Sun Microsystem's Open Office Calc program on my PC.) This allow the program instead of me to add up the amount spent as well as the amount saved via sales.

I mostly purchase music creation apps but I have bought a few games and misc. apps that have added approximately $40 to the total of my app spendage.

My total as of tonight (after purchasing Cube Synth) is $948.61. The good news is that I have saved $1107.71 via sales or free app promotions or even a few free promo codes.

I sure hope I will be able to transfer and use most of these apps to the upcoming iDevices for the near future.

  • Lol I don't even want to know.

  • Where are you checking to find your totals? I'm almost afraid to find out my totals. :-)

  • I didn't either, @mgmg4871but I had to know where my money was going.

@Audiojunkie, I usually keep track right after I download a new app. I'm sure there must have been times "late at night" where I forgot to do so though :-) .

  • I have a folder in gmail for my iTunes receipts. I guess some day I could write a scraper and find out the total, but i'd guess a grand is also pretty close for me. I could also be surprised, I remember racking up over $100 one month and the wife getting ornery about that. Now I try to keep it under $50, all music.

  • over the past 10 months - i think in the $75-100 range. I've tried to get most apps on sale, and i've fought off the urge to get more synths & effects many times... I'm hoping there will be lots of great sales coming up over November/December/January...

  • @dwarman, good point about the receipts. I always drag the iTunes emailed receipts into a saved folder. I guess I should go back and cross reference them to be sure I didn't miss anything.

I suppose keeping track of app expenditures may come in handy for insurance purposes in case of total loss of the iDevice. Hopefully the iTunes Store keeps track of that as well.

  • Isn't there an app that will tell you this (likely horrifying) number. Is it App Shopper?

  • Yes AppZapp does it and I avoid that page because it's a scary number tbh....

Don't forget to pick up iTunes gift cards when they are on sale; doing so basically gives you 20% off all your Appstore purchases. I fund my account exclusively with those sale cards.

• Early on, when I first started out with my iPad in March, I wasn't aware of either giftcard and app sales, and I also bought quite a few apps that turned out to be basically useless because they didn't have Audiobus or even an internal recorder or sharing options, leaving no way to get the sound into other apps, before I got wiser through this and other sites!

    So now, I always try to find giftcards on sale, usually at 20% too, and have a list of apps I'm interested in, ready to pounce when one goes on sale. Checking Appshopper for price drops;
Appshopper also shows the pricing history of apps, so one can get an idea of who might offer discounts in future. I do pay full price when an app seems absolutely worth it, though, when no sale seems imminent, but always with that 20% gift card discount now.

Even so, I must have spent about half of what OP spent...which is a bit...scary...I can't afford it, really, so the discounts are important to me. Still, I never could have afforded so much fun stuff on my PC.

The discounts sometimes do make me buy apps when I don't really need them, though, one recent example being Animoog; I didn't really want another synth but there ya go...but no regrets there...a great discount for a great synth...

I do regret many of those early buys, though, the ones that have no way of getting the sounds out, the ones that turned out to be "abxandoned", the ones with bad support and the ones that just weren't as good as others that I wasn't aware of at the time....

I'm much more choosy now, much more aware of who the quality devs are, checking videos and reviews, and generally more careful about what might be useful or not.

Ah well, one lives and learns...

  • Not sure exact but i would say i spend some hundred € in the last past month... and yes i will spend more in the future! I also bought some 49€ souns packs for the alchemy desktop version just for use in the mobile edition (now i also have the full blown desktop version too ;) because they where not available for mobile! So i'm perhaps not the "normal" user and i'm not rich but music apps, sounds, presets are my drugs. If the developers want my money.... please make more iPhone apps and not only ipad exclusive....PLEASE!

  • I don't want to know the total amount I have spent on apps. That would be bad. Even worse would be to see how much I have wasted on apps I never/rarely use.

  • If there is a way to see the total amount spent on apps, please identify them here so that I can block them from my wife's eyes. Goodness, that could be disastrous.

  • Yea the number I see in AppZapp is sickening, though I've gotten many of those for free or discounted, it's still a scary number if I spent half of that.

@GalaxyExplorer - any particular reason you don't just pickup an iPad. I know they're not cheap and some can't afford it, so I understand that. Do you like the idea of just working with an iPhone? Just curious...

  • @JMSexton: Yes, i just want one device for all and i like it really mobile means over 5" screen is no option (yet) for me... but after getting my iPhone 5s a hour ago... i'm aware of apple's quality for a while :( But that's another thing.

  • I'm realizing that AppZapp isn't entirely accurate, because there are many, many apps that I've paid for and since deleted, and AppZapp only estimates based off what you have installed.

  • @Audiojunkie - mine is showing every app I've ever downloaded and totaling them, I don't believe its smart enough to compensate for if you got it on sale or not but mine is def showing more than just what's on my iPad

  • ah, without sale prices included it's kind of a useless number.

  • Yea because I would literally vomit if I spent as much as it shows. There are times I go through AppZapp and download free apps then delete them, just so I have them in the future or may want them. I guesstimate that I've spent probably about a quarter of the total listed

Which page may I see (through eye-hiding fingers) this scary info on AppZapp?

  • edited October 2013

My AppZapp > My Apps ...look at the bottom right corner of the screen, click it and it'll break down total number of all your apps into paid/free and categories

  • @JMSexton: Strange, cause for me, I can immediately see that there should be about a dozen apps on my list that cost money that aren't showing up...maybe I'm doing something wrong....

  • Just counted Auria and plugins (250$ alltogether)and stopped after that.Better this is.Although it was a good investment but there are still more plugins i need for auria (the sugar bytes stuff).

  • two years of extremely frugal iOS music making: under $70 USD.

It can be done, waiting for sales, getting by with GarageBand and AudioShare since a real iOS DAW is out of my budget.

Then again, I don't actually finish any songs. All I have is an iPad full of Loopy HD sketches, but I've gotten well beyond $70 worth of enjoyment. :-) and some of my songs would sell millions if I could figure out how to finish them.

Anyway, I thought I would add my perspective from the other end of the spectrum.

I wouldn't like to see my grand total App Store spending.

    Ignorance is bliss....:)

  • @Hmtx, " and some of my songs would sell millions if I could figure out how to finish them". Preach, brother. Preach.

Guess i never really waited for a sale if i wanted an app. It's also a"support the developer"thing for me.All the nice stuff cost just a fragment of what a Desktop equivalent would cost...No offense but my "favorite"people are the ones crying for a sale as you can see it here and there in the auria or cubasis forum. That is SO outrageous imo.But i took the advantage of an intro price a couple of times and i bought a lot of apps on sale (that i would have never bought for the regular price)just to check them out.But only a few of them i really use.I can imagine that the small music biz will take the same dark route like mobile gaming.Too many customer clearly showing the developer they want all the goodies for free or at least a pricedrop and they will wait until that happen. So,more and more developer decide to change their system to"free 2 play"and you have to pay every single shit.in the worst case it could be waiting timers.Imagine:using a DaW a couple of hours and then you'll get a"stop"sign that force you to pay a dime to continue or wait until tomorow to go on for free...That is the worst of all payment methods imo but honestly with the"free for me"mentality out there...i can understand them.

edit:i would like to add that i OFTEN wait for a 20% discount on giftcards. But in this case none of the small developer are affected in a negative way ;-)

  • @boone51 :-)

let me know if you find someone who has the focus/determination/ apps/ ears to take all my Loopy magic and turn it into ... better magic?

@crabman, you are totally right. I think current iOS music is amazing, very low-cost in comparison to other options and I really hope it is a sustainable model that keeps the devs well-paid (I hope) working hard (no doubt, from interaction with devs on this forum), and enjoying their work. I'll never beg for sales or complain about the prices, but I honestly can only participate when things go on sale (yes, it is humiliating to admit that, considering how cheap apps are).

I'm also a minimalist, so I try to get by on as few apps as possible, and learn them well. Perhaps the resulting noise is not as diverse as other musicians... but still fun.

also, good call on the 20% discount cards. I guess Best Buy eats the loss on that?
