MYSTERY: Crackles(iOS or app issue?)

You got any crackling happening?

In particular, MODEL 15 is main offender.

I am trying to figure out what is up already this time. Latency is all on high settings and I have done reinstalls of MODEL 15.

I have plugged headphones in interface as well as directly in the iPad

Used multiple headphones.

Is there a master latency setting somewhere on an iPad or just per app?

I am getting it on some others as well. One being Layr.

I bounce around from Audiobus 2 and 3, and use AUM in there as well. Loopy is in the output for most cases.

I am just wondering with iOS 11 on Air2 if anyone is having crackling issues?

I also know I feel like iOS 11 is super slow opening things as well.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

This shit gets old some days when you just want to make music. Damn.

  • Try power off/on if you havent already....

Buffersize is set by the first app started...so if you started an app with a low latency setting, have now closed it, but it has gone zombie...it will still be controlling the buffersize.
If you start AUM and try changing the buffersize in there it will tell you if something else is already controlling it.

  • If the storage on the iOS device is almost full unexpected things might happen...
No crackling issues on my Air 2, iOS11.0.3 ~10GB free...

  • Crackling is caused by cpu not being able to handle what you are doing. In order to put less strain on cpu, you can raise the buffer size, but that also increases latency.

  • Try turning minimal ios processing and eco mode on and off. See if that helps

Also try a ram purge before launching. Close all apps and then press/hold power until power off screen comes up. Let go of power button. Now hold home button until the home screen appears again. This is supposed to close any ghosting apps and purge the memory. Seems to help with apps

Lastly try to turn buffer to 256 or even 512 if your device is old

  • Try Brambos tweak suggestions they really worked for me.

  • iOS 11 is the culprit i think....i got this from Korg....ref Gadget crackling and audio glitches...

“There are an known issues of iOS 11 with audio latency or distortion on iPad Pro 2017, your problem is similar to this iOS issues. There is a possibility that the issues is caused by the glitch problem. The issues are scheduled to be fixed in future updates of iOS 11. Please give us some time until the next iOS update is delivered.”

  • I think iOS 11.1 fixes this in some cases

  • i also am having this problem with model 15 on my air 2 with latest ios 11

  • The culprit for me were all in he Background processes being done by all the new Siri junk and location services. Like I said, went thru Brambos advice and combed my iPad settings line by line, locked the changes in restrictions settings page and iPad feels fresh and alive now!

    Did that.

    Over and over.

    And over.

As I mentioned it happens with some apps like MODEL 15 if only app open.

  • I must say I get weird occurrences where I close apps and then they end up playing in the background and they don't actually close (when orig in Audiobus)

This has been an issue for me for ages with my iPad Air 2. Model 15 is almost always a cracklefest. Other apps (especially in Modstep) contribute, like Shrike. I should mention that this is hosting the apps within Modstep rather than AUM, which I haven't tried yet. (Too many new toys around.)

  • Incredibly, Model 15 has been rock solid until I updated to IOS11, but after Brambos tweaks and other Siri junk being disabled plus other tweaks, it’s feeling way faster and more rock solid than even while I had it on 10.3.3. I think all these changes forced me to really clean up and tweak my old Air1.

Anyways will try to post screens of what worked for me in settings.

That's great news. I guess I should actually pop the hood and take a look at cleaning things up.

  • Yeah most take it all for granted since they own the latest hardware. But for us on Air1 we need to get creative and really pop the hood and tweak , disable, delete, whatever it takes to make this puppy Work. For me my Air 1 feels so much snappier after doing all the above.

Where can I find @brambos tweak suggestions? Also I mentioned adding a ram purge option to audiobus 3 to @Sebastian and it might be an upcoming feature (helpful for new iphones that won't have a home button). Not sure if memory purge power-home combo is the same as a memory refresh like this app appearently is supposed to perform.

No problems here. Rock solid in standalone, AUM, and AB3. iPad Air 2 iOS 11.0.3.

  • How's your free space on your device? Other than that, all I can say is I'm religious about turning off background app updates, alerts, siri, and other garbage - and about doing the memory clearing thing after every music making session.

Maybe it’s worth deleting and reinstalling Model 15?

  • Hi, iPad Air 2 IOS 11.03 here. Problems with crackling/glitching/timing problems ever since update. I normaly load apps into AUM, then have each track going into a separate Studiomux/Modstep track, & then out to Ableton on my win 10 pc. This worked fine before the update. I have found a workaround, which involves loading apps into Audiobus 2 instead of AUM, and this works fine with no glitching. I think the problem stems from the app icons not working properly with AUM + loaded apps, causing some sort of graphic interference when changing screen views. All the icons are there in Audiobus 2 & there is no glitching when changing screen views. I havn't tried this with Audiobus 3 as i don't own a copy yet. I think the problem may be to do with AUM and the missing in app icon graphics......i hope this has helped.....kind of a complicated thing to try & explain concisely.......i hope this will all be sorted in the upcoming ios 11 update. This workaround, replacing Audiobus for AUM definitely solves the crackle/glitch/timing thing for me on my AIR 2...........hope this helps.....cheers........
