Should I get Animoog or Model 15 or BOTH?

I know iPhone 5s is minimum requirement, but, my question is if that device is powerful enough to running the synth as standalone, even only playing with the included presets.

    Thanks.

    Thanks, @MonzoPro.

After a short search, I've found this, if someone else is interested as well:

  • That Animoog isn‘t from this planet. So weird and so fat sounding, unbelievable.

So what IAPs are worth to take from Animoog?

If you want to create your own sounds, go for the packs with more timbres than presets. Vintage vibes has 114 timbres and is not expensive. I don't like the presets that are included with the grateful dead pack but the timbres included are very useful in sound design. The Richard Devine pack has a lot of variety in both departments. I would recommend the monster moog and Devine packs as a good start. Was just about to grab the Model D pack but BeatHawk sale has my interest now as well.

Here is a chart with more information on the content of each pack

And Animoog for iPhone seems to be $2.
Anyone know if it also supports 3D touch for aftertouch, and does it work well? Might be good to have it on the phone, too, then.

I got the iPhone version and then discovered that all my expansion packs would have to be purchased again. Just a little warning for others who have invested in the IAPs. Can't really go wrong at that price and it worked great on an ancient iPhone 4s!

In my experience it varies a lot depending on the patches you use. The thoughts of navigating that monster modular on a phone screen make me uncomfortable!

You could always buy and get a quick refund if your device struggles to keep up... Or get something with a bigger screen and more power. The sale price is very generous

  • $9.99 Model 15 get! Thanks for the heads up!

Is there any function difference between the Animoog for iPhone and the regular Animoog?
I want to get the cheap one if it is not watered down in any significant way, and they seem the same as far as the Appstore descriptions go. But why two versions? Maybe just because it came out so long ago before Universal apps was a thing?

I researched the hell out of this a while back and the answer I got was a resounding NO.

I have owned the iPhone version for ages but finally pulled the trigger on the iPad one since the iPhone version wasn't cutting it on my iPad 12.7". Worth it for full screen, hi-res and layout, otherwise it's the same thing.

I was hoping this was the case. Thank you for confirming. Off to the Appstore... :)

  • At the current sale price of $9.99, getting both is a no brainer, you're saving yourself $40.00 I bought them at the full price, this is definitely a sweet deal.

The only significant difference is if you try to run the iPhone version ON an iPad, the Hold button disappears. That is all I have ever noticed.
Oh, and purchasing the IAPs all over again, of course.

I primarily use my Ipad for Model 15 but it does run great on my Iphone 5s, but I dont really do any patching or tweaking on the 5s because of the screen size, but all the patches I make on the Ipad are easily transferable to my 5s.

  • Was a thread needed for this question?

    Of course both.

    I mean like, its MOOG.

If i download the expansions from Animoog.org, is there some trick to install them? Maybe good 'ol iTunes?

I went down the rabbit hole trying to get my own audio in as timbres, pretty sure it needed ifunbox which I think no longer works? A couple of expansions from Moog gives you plenty of raw materials (timbres) to create your own patches. The base app feels a bit limited once you get used to having the extra content, I hardly use it on my iPhone for this reason.

    Animoog:

    • quite digital sounding - can sound very otherwordly
    • some sounds are more surprising and innovative
    • great random sound generation function (i love it)
    • all in all a bit strange as a synth - in a good way
    • less CPU use
    • well worth the money

    Model 15

    • can sound really, really very like analog equipment
    • when you are a modular-lover: a must!
    • when you are a preset-lover: more presets! Just change some presets to get new sounds.
    • detuning of oscillators sounds VERY analog-like
    • great presets
    • after you get used to the GUI: Very fluid use of metal engine
    • only 4-voice polyphone
    • to create your own sounds you have a bit more to learn (especially if modular synthesis is new for you)
    • on older devices with older iOS: maybe some crackles
    • yes, this "Moog sound" !!!
    • better basses - really
    • i found out: even the delay sounds better here
    • the arp has some really decent ideas included
    • some of the sounds even sound more analogue than my analogue equipment - i just don't know how they have achieved this.

If you ask me, the Model 15 is the better choice for many users. More to learn - more CPU use - but THIS great sound! Oh, and a lot of fun to use after you learned some tricks how to use it, like the "2-finger-technique" for fast zooming.

Maybe I'm wrong, but the iPhone version hasn't the 4 tracks recorder.

It looks like I get a one -track recorder with overdub capability and AudioCopy. That's ok though since I would have paid 8 bucks for a 4-track that I don't really need. As long as the synth engine is the same, I'm totally happy. :)

Don't quote me but those aren't the same. They both have a simple looper/recorder with overdub. The ipad version has a full on/full length 4 track recorder. Quite fun for soundscaping. At one point that was an IAP though. Not sure if it still is.

Mentioned already but if you think you're going to buy IAPs, remember that they are specific to the version from which you purchased them. There's no way to transfer them if you later get the iPad version.

  • Does anyone know how long the sale will go on for?

Actually, you can just copy over the preset files and timbres using itunes (on the mac at least). So the purchased presets are transferable; you just need a computer to do it.

Everything you have stated here is correct. The 4-track is listed as an IAP but only for the iPad version. Also the expansion pack IAPs do not transfer between the two versions.

There is no HOLD button on my iPhone version, but an older update says it became available on iPhone4 or newer.
Still haven't found it so maybe it didn't apply to iPad running iPhone version for some reason.

  • Process for those who don't know how to transfer purchased presets between IPad and IPhone versions of Animoog:

Step 1: Purchase the presets packs on either version of Animoog.

    Step 2: Connect to ITunes.

Step 3: Go to your iPhone or IPad "Apps" pane:

Step 4: Save the "categories" and presets folders to your desktop.

Step 5: Connect your other device and copy those two folders to Animoog on that device.

    Done!

p.s. I'm pretty sure the developer said on this forum that they would have liked the presets to be automatically transferrable between Animoog and Animoog-For-IPhone, but there was no mechanism to allow it by Apple.

  • Get them both while they are on sale. After all, OMG is just a mis-spelling of MOOG!

  • Feel like I must get these while on sale. Is it worth getting Filtatron too? Is it on sale too? What does it do?!

It's an FX looper thing. It's ok, one of the first music apps I bought, but I never use it. Not essential unless you're a completist or don't have anything similar already.

The other two are apps every serious iOS musician should have though. And at under twenty quid for the pair, it's a no-brainer.
