Why I love Moog Model 15

  • Mmh, its pretty buggy on Mac. When I copied an instance all get silence so I only can use one AUv3 inside Logic.
Not ready for prime time as most other AUv3 yet. It seems miRack is the only one working so far as it should now.

If you keep an eye on the CPU monitor you'll see why...
I can barely run 3 instances in Logic Pro on a 3Ghz 6-core i5 Mac Mini with the buffer set at 1024 :D

No, it has nothing do do with that. I can run much more demanding synths on my MacBook with lots of instances.
The problem is as soon as I want to use more than one instance inside Logic all instances has no audio output anymore and I also see this yellow ! in the plug-in. Indeed all audio in Logic get silent until I restart the audio engine.
Its seems simply not yet ready for Mac as most other iOS apps.
They should not sell it this way yet in the Mac App Store since it looks like simple a rushed port not working well at this point.

I did another test and it clearly has nothing to do with cpu since I easy can play 4 voice presets with sample buffer of 32 with no problem here (system cpu usage at about 10%).

    Only related to Mac BUT:
    This is a dangerous synth!!
I tried now to copy an ES2 instance with Model 15 as Audio FX and again one instance was fine but as soon as I copied it and triggered a note I got a giant burst. Good that I had a limiter on it or my speakers would be damaged now maybe. I got even an infinity +db sign where I happily had the limiter active.
I def. will delete it straight. Its a no go!!!!

  • O.k. Moog updated and now it works like it should.
It seems limited to 13 instances inside Logic. Everything more gets silent.
And 13 instances on an M1 machine are easy to handle, not bad.

  • Lol, the latest Model 15 Mac update is weird...

I know for a fact that my Audio Interface (Steinberg UR-242) is set to 44.1K 24-bit and yet Model 15 spits out this after I load the second instance and start playback...

(First they start to play out of tune, after that crackle town and then the above dialogue pops up).

Oh well, I guess the Q&A department at Moog will deliver at some point but this ain't the quality I expect from Moog B)

    Cheers!

This time everything runs fine for me. It seems its rather intel or apple silicon.
But I also get often these weird sample rate messages in Logic when cpu gets overloaded.
But actually Model 15 is very very low on cpu here.

Edit: Scratch that, the new bank is in the store for free without getting the mac version.

  • Thanks, Moog, a very nice surprise.

  • Worth buying an M1 macbook for this alone ... a sheer delight to rediscover - especially with some serious processor under the hood. Such a superb, definitive synth.

  • I loaded this onto my MacBook Pro 16 and...no visual...looks like it doesn't work in this environment...oh well, when I get to an M series I'll have another look. In the meantime Mirack does load up and I can see it and load modules, I'll spend some time with this and see what happens.

Try a reboot. I had the same problem, but after a reboot all was good.

Yes, same was on my M1 machine.

  • Seriously killer, love that it still works on my trash can Mac Pro. If this is a sign of things to come what will happen to Fabfilter, Culture Code Things etc... Desktop versions are like 5x cost of iPad versions.

I wouldn't hold my breath, I'd assume that those developers will simply choose to never make the iOS apps available for the Mac

Tried that and still, a couple of times....tried a rescan from within the plugin manager too...I might try and reinstall and see what happens....

Fixed it....I opened it up in stand alone...I went looking for it and didn't realise it was just sitting in there with the rest of my apps (doh)...I was going to uninstall and wondered what would happen if I just opened it. There it was in all it's wonder...closed it, opened it up in Logic and there it is....happy days... it does chew up the CPU though..might be better to just keep it IDAM and be happy with a touch interface....

  • I really, I mean really like the new Model 15 'Synthesist Toolkit' presets all 75 of them...

Can only imagine that @thesoundtestroom would have a real blast playing thru all of them B)

    Cheers!

  • @echoopera So when will you reveal why you love moog model 15?

Doug is a preset guy by his own admission, so totally agree with you!

  • Whoa, glad I saw this thread today. Model 15 full screen on my MBP is awesome.

Thank you moog for making Model 15 an AU. I just love this beast of a synth. Made a little jam tonight using two instances of it in BeatMaker 3 with some custom drum sound bank from Electronisounds @Junebug thanks for the nice kit o:) <3

    Joy joy joy...

Loving the wet, lush, distorted vibe @echoopera ! Been having fun just sampling it on desktop version using Blackhole to route the audio into Ableton.
