Colossus piano - question about stability/performance when used as AUv3
I have a few questions about Colossus Piano:
When hosted as an Audio Unit (particularly in AUM), how well does it perform? Specifically:
1) What is the polyphony?
2) What is the CPU usage like? (I have an iPad Air 2)
3) Do you ever experience crashes?
4) Do you ever experience glitches?
I currently use Ravenscroft live, and although I LOVE how it sounds, I often experience CPU spikes and glitches when using it alongside other apps.

I’m going to buy some of the IAPs for Colossus on Thursday, but in the mean time, I use CMP by the same dev and that works fine in AUM.
I will say though, I have had some issues with that series of apps when changing presets while AUM is running other apps by its transport control. It’s rare, but I’ve had it happen.
When not changing sounds, I have experienced no issues.
I’m on Air 2 iOS 11.1.1
just curious, which ones are you getting? I just bought the pianino and find it quite nice
I’m going to get all of them except the two largest ones, as can’t fit them on my iPad at this time with the iSymphonic IAPs I’m going to get too!
Wished I could have them on trial to see if any are too close to CMP though
I think they're quite different. at least most of them. possibly, the Steinways will sound somewhat similar but to me even they sounded different enough in the preview. different instruments sampled, quite probably.
@nick @Fruitbat1919 so do you feel that Colossus is stable enough for live performance (hosted as an AUv3 in AUM along with other apps for pads/etc)? Or do you notice the CPU ramping up?
I haven't specificly checked stability in AUM but so far had no issues with the AUv3. Have to say that the standalone crashes a lot. Virtually every time I use it.
I find the AUv3 very user unfriendly, you get one gigantic scrollable list, of hundreds of instruments, but that's probably not an issue if you don't have to change instruments live.
No idea yet, but I can say that two instances of CMP plus EOS2 runs at around 23% (peak 28%) in AUM on my Air2
one instance of collossus plus eos2 is around 23% on an iPad Pro. that's the pianino, not sure if other pianos need more or less cpu
I just loaded the Pianino one and it’s really quite nice! Might not get them all now, just a few for a while to have a few changes now and again
I wanna know how long it takes to install that big Colossus bastard lol
I bought the Japanese one so far
Yeah what do you think about the Japanese one? Thinking about that one too. Just downloading the epianos now. I just can’t free up 14gb for one piano!
So after the pianino, I bought the vintage upright. Surprisingly, it is not that different from the pianino. But also nice.
But when I try to change instruments between the two, the app crashes (not almost, but most of the time). I have to say, that makes me hesitate a bit to get more of them. This has quickly become the most crashing app on my iPad ...
I’ve not had that problem in AUM so far, but have with their other apps. I believe it is a known issue and it should be sorted at some point.
yes, hopefully they'll solve it. because selecting pianos in the auv3 is not really fun, especially with the e-pianos installed, the list just gets too long.
by the way, I bought the Kawai in iSymphonic and it is lovely
I’m just downloading some iSymphonic packs now lol
I’m sure Gary Numan used to use a Kawai piano with a D50 or M1 sound layered
I got the Japanese and find it a little bit odd. It is very quiet. Softer in volume than the others, and seems to emphasize the soft samples. For the lower notes, it even sounds like the louder samples might be missing. Maybe it is a very soft piano. Also, some of the higher notes have very strong noise. This piano would not be my first recommendation.
I’ve downloaded too many iSymphony packs to have any more pianos lol
on the plus side, I have no more crashes since the Japanese Grand is installed -- that is strange but welcome
I’ve had a few issues when loading the Japanese in stand alone
On screen keyboard didn’t seem to play right
It seems I have to reload the piano a second time to make it load/play correctly
Works seamlessly as a AU though
Have redoanloaded and installed
Those iSymphonic packs take all day to download don’t they haha. I bought about half of those as well.
Just three packs short of the lot now lol
I have it now and got to say I should have listened to you. I will no doubt find a use with it mixed in with other sounds, but it won’t be going anywhere near solo use lol
yeah, it's a strange instrument. I don't mind imperfect, but this feels a bit flawed ...
Did you get any pianos you particularly liked? I decided not to buy another except on personal recommendation ...
I bought the two IAPs for CMP. All sound decent, but not had much time to really get my ears around them yet - no obvious oddity like the Japanese one in Colossus.
In Colossus, I bought the electric pianos set, Pianino, Vintage Upright and Japanese Grand. Pianino and Vintage sound similar with my hearing, yet differ quite a bit from the upright in CMP.
Hard to do any real AB test in AUM, as if I try and set up all the different pianos on different channels to solo them, Colossus crashes. Will reply further when I’m actually able to listen to them for longer without crashing lol
funny, I have the exact same IAP in Colossus ... and agree that the two uprights are very similar.
in the electric pianos, I really like the first one, the electric grand. some of the others are a bit odd. for exampple there is a wurly that has strong chorus on only the louder velocities which seems odd to me.
Haven’t really taken a good look at the electric pianos raw yet, as I’ve only used them through FX in AUM so far.
@nick I just downloaded a midi piano piece so that it takes my naff playing out of the equation.
Now I can tell a difference between the two Colossus uprights we have. It’s not major, but definitely there, though not sure a bit of EQ couldn’t d9 the same lol.
I’m now convinced that the download of the Japanese Grand is faulty. It just sounds like someone sucked all the life out of it! 14 layers, me thinketh not!
I wrote them an e-mail about the Japanese Grand ...
I’ve had more of a play with the Japanese Grand. I’ve tried different midi controller apps. It seems like all the layers are crammed into very little of the midi range. So to get much out of it, you have to play hard pretty much all of the time.
It’s still not as loud as the others, but it’s perfectly reasonable, but only at really high velocities. So, it’s virtually unplayable as it is.
I’m just wondering why it sounded OK in the SoundTestRoom video?
I wonder if anyone else who had the app when it first came out can tell us if it’s changed?
