SunVox updated to 1.9.3

Lots of changes in here, but Midi in being added to module properties is the one I have been dying for. So happy! :) <3

  • Will this update make me feel less like an idiot when fumbling about with it?
    Or is that a task beyond the skills of mere mortal developers?

  • Hey hey, great stuff! Going to play with event outputs for MetaModule. That's the big one for me.

  • @JeffChasteen If you are hating the tracker, then I think the MIDI in property on the Modules is going to make it more useful to you. You already could have 4 midi channels coming in, but all I was able to do previously was record 4 channels of MIDI into the tracker simultaneously. Then I had to manually set which modules received the recorded data in the tracker. Now you can set the modules to receive MIDI directly, up to 4 channels simultaneously I believe, and avoid the tracker if you prefer to not deal with it. You can play the awesome SunVox sounds with external MIDI sequencers and hardware. I have not tested it at all, but I was seriously waiting for this update as Mr. Zolotov announced it was coming on the SunVox forum a while ago.

  • I wish the dev would implement a sample slicer, it's the only thing keeping sunvox from going from the bees knees to the bees knees on skis.

  • Here's the full list of changes:

    What's New in Version 1.9.3

    • Audiobus 3 support (with MIDI);
    • sound engine optimization;
    • MIDI IN options has beed added to the Module Properties: here you can change the MIDI IN channel and the mode (receive MIDI commands "when the module selected" or "always");
    • the biggest Sampler update since 2008;
    • Sampler: click removal algorithm (between two notes on the same channel, or during the sharp note cutoff);
    • Sampler: added four new envelopes to control the effect (with polyphony support), which is one of the built-in SunVox modules; so you can choose almost any SunVox module (for example, Filter or MetaModule), and it will be stored inside the Sampler;
    • Sampler: new option "Ignore velocity for volume";
    • Sampler (sample editor): new loop parameter - Sustain; when enabled, loop will be finished after the Note OFF;
    • Sampler (sample editor): deeper zoom;
    • Sampler (sample editor): Crossfade Loop effect has been added into the menu;
    • Sampler (envelope editor): unlimited envelope length, unlimited number of envelope points;
    • Sampler (envelope editor): point info display has been added; press it to show/hide the additional buttons for precise point control;
    • Sampler (envelope editor): new envelope parameters: Gain, Velocity influence;
    • Sampler (envelope editor): new envelopes: Pitch, Effect Controller;
    • MetaModule: new option "Event output"; when enabled, the MetaModule can output events (Note ON/OFF, Set Pitch, etc.) from the internal Output module; see the examples metamodule_arpeggiator3/4;
    • MetaModule: effect 07 (set sample offset by percentage) is now supported too; you can use it to jump to the specified location within the MetaModule-project;
    • MetaModule: new mode "play without repeat" has been added to the "Play patterns" controller;
    • Filter, Filter Pro, Flanger, LFO, Vibrato: current LFO phase is visible now (on the "Set phase" controller);
    • Filter, Filter Pro, Flanger, LFO, Vibrato: the incoming notes (Note ON commands) reset the LFO phase to "Set phase" value;
    • MultiSynth: new option "Trigger" (ignore Note OFF commands; the new note turns off the old note with the same pitch);
    • MultiSynth: new controller "Curve2 influence" (mix between the linear (default) and the user-drawn curve2);
    • Reverb: new controller "Random seed";
    • LFO: new controller "Generator" (always generate a signal, even if the input is empty);
    • LFO: triangle waveform;
    • Pattern Editor: new function "Place evenly" (place events evenly in the selected area);
    • new project parameter - "Time grid2" (the higher-level grid, number of time grid cells);
    • lists of the recent files and folders have been added to the file browser; you can disable it in the Preferences -> Interface;
    • "Resize" button has been added to the musical keyboard in the file browser (when the Preview is enabled);
    • Preferences -> Main: new button "Log" (show/save SunVox log);
    • Preferences -> Interface: new option "Zoom buttons" (hide/show zoom in/out buttons);
    • Preferences -> Interface -> Color theme: ability to manually adjust the four primary colors;
    • new instruments and effects (see the folders instruments and effects);
    • new examples: NightRadio - Reach for the Stars, Transient - Can It Be Beautiful;
    • new simple examples: sampler effect envelopes, metamodule_arpeggiator3, metamodule_arpeggiator4;
    • bug fixes.

    Cool! Works as an AB3 MIDI sender, complete with four named outputs.

    Nope.

    Or is that a task beyond the skills of mere mortal developers?

    Perhaps. But SunVox makes no attempt to be non-cryptic. I personally like feeling like an idiot and am very good at it. SunVox is right up my alley. B)

    Its the Hex stuff that kills me. So cryptic.

    I have told thee often, and I re-tell thee again and again, I hate the Tracker...

    Practice makes perfect.
    SunVox is like the metronome for it.

    Shameless plug: Since the newest SunVox update, for anyone who doesn't get along with its tracker-based composition: Xequence can now fully control up to 16 separate SunVox modules via Virtual MIDI, including automation of any of the modules' parameters :) (just tested)

    It's a 'tracker', learn to use the sample-offset command for your slicing needs ;)

  • Excellent, this is the update I was waiting for, AB3 midi and able to input multiple midi tracks (I think) :) great stuff.

    Well damn - looks like I'm finally going to get some use out of SunVox...

    Thanks, that is very tempting. Can you tune the modules? I like to play in 7-limit just intonation. I think it should be possible in Sunvox but I haven't yet figured it out.

  • @dvlmusic: hehe. ;)

    Quick tutorial: 1) In Sunvox, double-click the module you want to use. 2) Set "MIDI IN" to "always". 3) select a channel. 4) in Xequence, add an instrument 5) select "SunVox" as the destination. 6) select the same channel. 7) Done.

    If you want to control any of the module's parameters: 1) In Sunvox, double-click the slider of the parameter you want to control. 2) Tap on the button next to "MIDI IN", it will say "Waiting for MIDI evt". 3) in Xequence, go to the keyboard, activate the "CC" button and move the controller on the left. Done.

    That is great to know. I'd say it was a "useful, relevant plug."

    Thanks for the news (and the app, of course)!

    You can double-click a module and adjust the "Finetune" parameter...

    Then I'd just have to figure out how to assign a different module to each note in the scale. That's kind of where I give up and go back to Thumbjam.

    How about using TJ as a filter, now that SunVox has AB3?

  • Quantum/Modstep/Odessa driving multiple Sunvox modules is going to be a lot of fun :)

    I don't think Sunvox has MPE. I've had bad luck using pitch bend but it might work.

    I think that it should be possible to build a meta-module inside Sunvox that gives you a separate, perfectly-tuned module for each note. I just haven't cracked it yet.

    That sounds like you are on the right path. Very interested in what you uncover and discover. :)

    I’m of no help here, but you’ve got my full-on moral support. (you’ve probably already searched the Sunvox modules forum http://www.warmplace.ru/forum/viewforum.php?f=11&sid=33ccae4d5b5020a51aefb7a18a95ff2b)

  • SunVox and Audulus 3 are the two apps I definitely want to learn, but I keep putting it off ...never been quite so intimidated by an application before!
    I do love loading projects created by my superiors and just marveling at the spectacle.

  • Does this mean sunvox' clock will now sync to external MIDI?
