How does it compare to Enlight or Pixelmator?

Much more advanced. A lot like photoshop. Not dumbed down in features either

  • Just downloaded and watching the iOS specific tutorials.

One thing I'll say about Affinity is they do a great range of tutorial vids.

Seems to have a good list of features, I’m not sure how it can handle “unlimited layers”? (Impressive if it’s true).

    Can you save presets/actions?

And any chance you can do clipping masks in here? (If yes, I’m buying it right now) :D

Word of warning though... if you want to save your edits, you're going to have to get used to off-loading them to external storage or your desktop. They can get HUGE for some reason and will quickly start eating up your iOS storage.

Have it now, seems great so far, will be using this a lot when I get the Apple pencil. I can see why they might be huge files as a lot of it is non destructive so some edits are temporary. I'm sure there's ways to flatten stuff but this may be a reason why files could be large.

Haven't left yet ;) Just got out of shower... yeah, you CAN flatten for sure... but I was taking about you have a multi-layer project file that you want to hang onto for further editing. If you flatten, they come down to reasonable sizes. I don't have an Apple pencil yet (maybe Santa will oblige) ;) but I do have a JotPro and it works great in Affinity. I can only imagine the Apple pencil would really be awesome in it.

Not sure about the saving actions or presets. Also not sure about clipping masks but I believe it’s there. They have a lot of tutorials on YouTube. And the unlimited layers is all depending on the iPad hardware and storage space.
I’ve watched a bunch of tutorials for photoshop and was able to accomplish the same thing using affinity on my iPad. So there’s a testament to its feature set

  • Thanks for the heads up on this.

  • Loving this app, apart from the lack of a dedicated local Affinity Photo storage folder in Files, I almost prefer using it to the desktop version.

Really, really good, amazed they’ve retained so many of the desktop features (if not all of them).

Going to try importing/exporting projects to the desktop later to see how that goes.

  • It says it was rated app of the year on the apple store home page. I have it and it is a fantastic app. I am going to spend a lot more time with it over the Christmas break.

Yes i'm keen to get the pencil now I have this one. :)

Been looking into font installation and you can't do this in settings, surely this must change one day.
Well there's an app where you can import fonts for free. Seems to work pretty well https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/font-manager/id789211165?mt=8

Anyone have experience with the 2015 iPad Pro 12.9? How does it perform?

You mean how does it perform with this app or in general?

I have the 2015 iPad Pro and it still runs like a beast, haven’t had problems with any apps so this should work just fine.

  • Sorry, yes I’m curious how my iPad Pro will handle Affinity Photo.

Works fine on my Air 2, so should be even better on your Pro.

Thanks, had a quick look but couldn't see how to import fonts in it...Font manager is pretty good as you can open zip files of TTF and OTF fonts, or from itunes but installing is slow as you can't seem to do loads at once, just one by one.

Haven’t done it in a while but as far as I remember you can ‘open in’ and then choose Over and it should automatically import.

Anyfont. it installs fonts to yr ios system so they turn up in most graphics apps. beware! it looks like it can install a huge bundle at one go .. but in reality I've found the limit to be around 20 at one install.

Agreed, but what we now have is so much more than said ten dollars would otherwise have likely ever been, had it been found and then not had under other circumstances...

Cheap at the price. Problem is I’m now thinking about their forthcoming Designer app, and what I could do with a newer iPad and Apple Pencil....

Significant difference or purpose of the new one? If Affinity is a PS killer (sort of), what area is Designer aimed at? Illustrator?

Have to say (I know, said it already) that I wondered about the pencil (it was a gift) but have liked it/haven't broken it. Would be very interested to hear how you get along with it if Santa (or self) decides to treat you etc.

  • That’s a funny looking dollar sign.

Designer is a vector based graphics app, so Illustrator-like. I’ve got Photo and Designer on Mac and PC as I use them for work (and they’ve saved me a fortune as Adobe replacements), so I’ve got the full set now. I use Designer for vector work - so for example I’ve used it to create logos, and rebranded a couple of organisations with it....not bad for a piece of software I paid £29.99 for. You can do a bit of basic DTP with it as well, but they’re soon going to nail that niche as well with their forthcoming Publisher software.

The reason I’ve held off on the iPad version of Photo up until now, is I don’t use it for graphics - just music and web browsing, and to be honest I haven’t really got the disk space to do much more anyway. But....with Designer coming soon to the iPad, and seeing how well Photo works on it, I’ve started thinking that maybe in a years time I’ll upgrade to a Pro and Pencil.

A couple of months back I was almost done with the iPad, but apps like Rozeta have got me back into it, and now Affinity are making me think I could do a bit of work on it too.

Absolutely no way I’d wangle a Pro for this xmas, but I’m going to wear her down by talking up the Launchkey.

Their desktop software has had constant updates, they’re a good company to invest in.

What I love about the desktop versions is they keep some older versions available for download - which is comforting for those of us old old machines and OS’s - we can update without worrying about potential issues.

I’d leave adobe quick if there was a real alternative to Lightroom that also has a good mobile app as good as Lightroom on iOS
