Suggest me a keyboard

Hi there
I'm looking for a keyboard for my iPad 4 (retina) with iOS 7.
I only know the irig keys that is fully compatible with iOS, but the keys are too small, I prefer something standard.
I need this key only for synths and organs, maybe aftertouch will be a cool feature, 37 or 49 keys are enough for me!
I don't need pads an sliders! Only keys and mod and pitch wheel.
I prefer something plug n play.
Thank you!

  • Ok thank you, but I can't find good info in that discussion.
Maybe a novation launchkey will work with my ipad?

  • The Launchkey was built for iPad so I think it's a good choice. I've tested it at Musikmesse and it's pretty nice and has a lot of knobs and pads.

  • Ok thank you, but I should buy the usb to lightning converter... :/
I hope it works with other apps other than the novation launchkay app!

  • I just bought a samson graphite 49 from korg clearance on ebay for £70. It is ios compatible and has 5 virtual midi ports, protools mode giving hui support for auria, highly programmable buttons, knobs and faders. Velocity & aftertouch, pads with velocity and aftertouch too.

    Worth a look :-)

  • I went another route altogether, mainly by accident. You see, I already owned an original MAudio Oxygen 8 which is battery powered and has knobs and such, and thought it might be worth trying to use. I decided to buy an MAudio USB Uno 1x1 midi cable, because I had heard that it works. I tried it out and it works perfectly. So, the point I'm getting at, is that if you want, you can use any keyboard you desire if you get a compatible usb midi cable interface, rather than buying an entire keyboard designed just for the ipad.

  • Ok, I understood!
But, should I use midi to usb into CCK or keyboard usb out into CCK?

  • If you are going the way I do it, you can use any keyboard (Midi) out to USB into CCK. If you choose to go keyboard usb out into CCK, it may still work, but you will probably need a powered USB hub. Also, you'll need to test it first, because it may or may not work. Using an iOS compatible keyboard is of course the other option. :-)

  • The samson seems a really good keyboard, but the irig keys looks like a toy :/
I prefer standard size keys, but I don't need all the bells and whistles like sensitive pads, knobs and sliders.
I should buy keyboard, usb to lightning and midi cable, it's not a cheap solution!!!
Any other keyboards for ios devices?

    :D

  • I'm really divided between irig keys and cme x-key. :/
The cme seems the perfect keyboard, but it has only 25 keys, (and I need 37 keys) and I should buy the cck too... :'(

  • If you need 37 keys, don't settle for 25 keys, or you will regret it. I know from experience.

  • Though I generally prefer larger keys, I find that the iRig keys works just great for single handed parts. Having the 3 octaves is great and it's super portable. I can do leads, pads and bass lines no problem. When I want to do a two handed piano or EP part (something that usually needs 5 octaves), I'll plug in my old Korg X5 using the CCK and a $6 MIDI-USB cable I got on Amazon.

  • It's a year that I don't play a synth or a keyboard, I'm only playing my piano at this moment... :/
I was a stupid for buying irighd instead irig pro...

But every MIDI impulse works right with CCK?
I think the MIDI out is the same in any kayboard... It is'nt a question of software or firmware, MIDI is only an impulse right?

  • I'm not sure what you mean with "impulse" unless you mean the Midi output commands. If so, then yes, in general most keyboards follow the GM standard. Roland and Yamaha had extensions to that standard, but they too used the GM standard output when selecting that type of output.

  • MIDI is a digital signal, I think if I press a C key on a M-Audio, Novation, Korg, Samson or Roland master keyboard the midi signal is the same. Right?

  • Ok tank you!
I wrote to CME, I asked them if the Z-keys 49 works with ipad!

PS: actually iRig Keys seems the cheapest solution (I already have the IK multimedia lighting cable), how are the irig's keys? Are they touch sensitive?

I was excited about the iRig Keys originally, and then tried one of the keyboards out at the local Guitar Center. I really disliked the feel. The keys were sluggish and soft. I really don't know how to describe it other than to say they felt cheap. I like keyboards that have a snappy semi-weighted feel. For example, I liked the Ensoniq ASR-10, most Roland Keyboards, the AKAI MPK 49, and my StudioLogic SL-161. The iRig Keys felt really awful. That doesn't mean that it isn't great for what it offers and at what price it is offered at--you just have to try it for yourself and decide what works for you. I'm kinda picky about keyboard feel. I don't even like the feel of most of my keyboards that I own (hahaha). I really like the AKAI MPK 49, and would like to eventually upgrade to that one for my home use. :-)

  • By the way, like I said, if you get a compatible Midi to USB cable, any midi keyboard should work for you, so pick a keyboard you like, and then make sure you get a compatible midi to USB cable.

  • Ok thank you again, any suggestion for the midi to USB cable?

    This is what I'm using:

    http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Uno

...but it's not a "supported" solution, and there are many different and even cheaper solutions available. :-)

  • Thank you, I see that CME are doing a Midi to USB cable, now I'm waiting for their response :D

  • Uhm I have just a question:
Do the knobs and sliders work correctly with ipad app?
I want to know something about this because I'm undecided between buying a "simple" keyboard (alesis q, carbon etc) or something more complex (axiom, keylab, graphite, impulse etc.)
For example, if I have a keyboard with 8 knobs, I want to know if it is possible to control filter, volume, gain, tone etc...

    Something like these:

    Thank you!

  • It depends on the app, but those that allow midi mapping usually work well.

  • Uhm, Ok, I should learn something about midi mapping, but this is ok! Now the next step is find a good deal for a master keyboard!
Do you have any suggestion for a good built quality keyboard?

(I studied piano when I was child, and I had only two synths: alesis micron and microkorg, I am a noob about midi programming)

  • I use the M-Audio Oxygen 49 and have been happy with that, but I do have a rather limited reference for comparison. It's been pretty good as far as app compatibility goes, but since I'm mainly a guitarist, I can comment much on the feel of the keys.

  • Uhm, Ok, I should learn something about midi mapping, but this is ok!

Lots of apps have midi mapping or 'midi learn' and it's simple to set up. You connect your controller to the app, put it in 'learn' mode, touch an on screen control and then move a slider/knob on your keyboard. Now that slider/knob will control whichever on screen control you 'mapped' it to. Without a learn mode, you'd determine what your slider/knob is sending out (a particular midi continuous controller number) and go into your app and assign the knob you want to that controller number manually. Both work fine, learn is a bit faster and most modern synth apps have one or the other or both.

  • Uhm ok, It's a bit weird, but I hope this will work with Thor and Alchemy!
