    Or

Virsyn Tap Delay allows some options

@Fruitbat1919 Can the Virsyn tap delay be used as Audio Unit or just IAA thanks for info

@Fruitbat1919 And can the delay effect be bypassed so can use just the tape section wow flutter etc?

Use the music cassette setting and adjust from there

Yes, Tap is AU or IAA

honestly, the author of the video gives some nice explanations what working with a cassette tape is about - and those sound deformations were shurely surprise & fun.
But that's about it... I don't see any creative advantage or special feature - rather the opposite. Considered 'cool' because the gear is not omnipresent/ready for download.

You can do ALL his tricks in Apesoft's Moebius and Sparkle and be assured these are NOT self-runners out of the box.
Though you can be as random as with an arbitrarily choosen reversed tape it's actually more fun to have a bit of a plan (or an idea) what the processing is about.
That's where creativity is spawned - you hear something and can react to it, adjust the process and extend it according to your phantasy.

Have you read article at link above video? It explains different tricks

not yet - thought it was the same subject - will read now ;)
later: no news in there - most of that stuff self-experienced with my own r2r 4 track, the cheaper Grundig instead of his Uher Royal.
Btw I still have a small Uher mixer of that time around, featuring identical inputs as that tape machine - which are really good.

… but I've seen really decent deals on late model reel to reel multitracks like the Fostex R8. …

Careful there, from memory, the Fostex R8 was launched to much acclaim because it undercut a significant price point, providing 8 track open reel for an unheard of low price. The thing is, it was the first time 8 tracks had been squeezed onto that smaller tape width – meaning more danger of crosstalk (although as a plus, it can run at the next speed higher than cassette portastudios, which itself is the next speed up from standard audio cassette)...

@u0421793 I hear you but to kick around experimenting I figured like a used R8 would be a cheap low risk machine. I have said it here before & have no shame in doing so that I am a huge Tascam fan, so if it's sonic fidelity you are looking for get the best built machines, the Tascams.

R8's were ¼" tape machines and my favorite PortaStudio was the 488mkII cassette 8 track that had the cassette standard width of ⅛". At those widths all sorts of audio bedevilment can transpire. I had to record with hot levels and clean & demagnetize regularly to keep them at a minimum.

I’ve just bought the Virsyn Tap delay app. I was considering buying a Strymon El Capistan. What I really like in the El Capistan is the sound on sound mode. It lets you record a loop, add overdubs and tweak the tape degradation parameters in real time, as demonstrated in the following video:

The virsyn app seems to emulate this, bur for one thing: is there a way to start and stop the recording of the first loop so that de delay time matches the length of the loop? I know I could record the first loop and dial in the precise delay time, and overdub from there, but I would love to have the complete hands on, real time approach that the El Capistan offers.

Yes, bought mine used and sold it on a year or so later for not much less.

I almost wish I’d kept it but I went on a phase of doing everything on desktop and needed the $.

Oh, you mean the disks themselves were pricey? I don’t recall needing one as I had a couple spare.

The unit was built like a tank as I recall.

I had that(SP808) & MC 505, Yamaha RS 7000 & Novation Basstation mk1 (keyboard & Rack). Roland Vintage Synth Module & Roland Dance Module (sequenced from the Amiga 1200, using OctaMed SoundStudio), via an old Phonic 8 channel mixer bubbling away into the SP 808. My bedroom looked like black spaghetti with all the cables..... Those were the days....... :D

  • This thread sure brings back memories...

I remember my first real studio setup purchase was a Teac A3340, a small Tascam mixer, a Roland Space Echo, and a Gibson SG. And I rented a Minimoog for a month. Creamy heaven!!!

All fun stuff, but I wouldn't go back to it now. My iPad Pro 12.9 with Auria Pro and all the FabFilter plug-ins with all of the great synths and other musical goodies just blows me away.

  • @stormbeats Tap Delay has just recently gone AU plus parameter automation.

  • I may be totaly missing something here but it seems like the BM3 sampler would be able to do this sort of thing quite easily.

Hehe funny how some archaic tech can bring a warm sigh and a nostalgic tear (like an Amiga with a 40meg HD) but wind the clock forward just a few years to a 100meg zip disk (which I actually would I have killed for in the Amiga days) and that item turns my stomach when I think of it. Pockets of time, heh.

Heh, I recall when a friend of mine in the 80s came back from a vacation in the UK to Canada with these bizzare ‘Action Force’ toys that were like remixes of G.I. Joes. Some seemed to be remolds lifted from existing vehicles and characters. They would stare from across the room, taunting me that I had no idea how the real world worked.

The memory I have of tossing my fully functional Amiga 2000HD in a dumpster registers as one of the most surreal in my life. I can’t believe I did it without batting an eye. Was certainly living in the moment when I was in my twenties.

Your missing the ole classic Zip Disk matey in your collection. When I use to have a Roland SP 808 back in the day. ;)

Actually, I think my brother still has the Amiga's (A500/A600 & A1200)?....... All boxed up in his loft in the UK...... Next to his "Action Men" & "Tonya Toys"?...... & his Philips CDi..... :)

All this XMasness time is makin old Gus feel... old.

Did they have the "Eagle" eyes? (A little switch at the back of the head, which made there eyes go left &a right)........ :D

Hehe, no eagle eyes as this was the era of the 3 3/4 inch ‘action figure’ but my Bionic Man a few years earlier had a cool telescope eye where you could look through the back of his head and everything looked... further away... errr...

Yeh!..... The Six Million Dollar Man(Steve Austin) was cool(especially on his right arm, you pulled his rubber skin away to reveal his bionics)......... so I'd better not meantion "Stretch Arm Strong" then? :)

Lots of love for old Stretch!

    >

By the look of that pic, it looks like a young "Spock" had one of those on planet Vulcan too...... :D
He of never had one of these yet, until he was older. :D

    >

Hah! i totaly saw the same thing and was temped to photoshop some ears on.

    :D
So he was trying to practice on Stretch a "Vulcan Mind Meld". :D

Speaking of Tap Delay, I didn’t realize before that the AU presets don’t show up unless the standalone app is opened before the Audio Unit after installation. (As mentioned above.) Sorry for the tangent, but I was wondering, does this happen with any other AUs? Which might therefore call for a reinstall.

reminds me on my most enduring 'upgrade' session ever: bought an SP808 used for less than the Boss RE20 pedal because it had the exact same Space Echo algorithm.
Not bad to have a 4 track recorder plus a groove sampler thrown in - wanted it to run on flash media, but compatible atapi readers were sold out.
This triggered an endless chain of purchases of whatever seemingly outdated card reader came around and all kinds of CF-cards, about 6 readers and 20 cards... all failed.

In the end it wasn't about the gear anymore, but just the challenge to make it work.
And one day I succeded with PCMCIA cards from a Cisco router - self clapping shoulder.
Snatched the samples from the first iMPC and transfered a bunch of them to the card.
Big sound, put it on the shelf for a couple of months and after switching it on again ... all my samples screwed, only garbage left. Those cards probably expect to be powered on constantly and don't store content for longer periods unplugged - wtf.
Threw the towel and sold the box, though the sound was cool :o

Dat takes me back, I loved that thing! Built in D-Beam too.

The disks were sub-optimal design tho ..
