SynthScaper: Unlocking Mysteries?
Can anyone point to an extensive narrated tutorial video or video series for this app?
The more I fiddle in this app I am starting to think this may be more a game changer than realized for iOS music.
It almost is starting to feel like only a persons imagination can be the limit of this app.
What is your learning method or curve like for SynthScaper?

I’ve got nowhere with it, because every time I play with it, I get lost in the sound and just end up playing for an age
It's an incredible app that I don't think most have really caught on to yet, based on the slightly cryptic interface. I took time to go through a few videos and figured most of it out, but didn't use it for a bit and forgot.
The PantsofDeath guy says he's working on an extensive, possibly multi-part tutorial/demo for this. He said he had one done some time ago, but had messed up the audio or something and decided to start over.
The only part that trips me up now is how to assign LFO and envelope effects changes via sliding up/down on the keyboard. I can work it out, but I'd like to understand it better. I also haven't dived into the brand new design feature yet. Only hitting the random generator, and experimenting with restricting the choices of samples to ONLY the ones I've imported, etc.
Fantastic app, the only drawback for me is the hit on my Air 2. No idea how it works, but the randomiser is great fun.
Sounds like the last 20 years of my life............
Hopefully this thread will be an SOS to the very talented and unique developer
The randomizer has definitely made a huge impact on my attempting it.
Does it ever go on sale?
Like all his apps, the "saving' system seems antiquated and counterintuitive to me.
I feel like one button "save" or "save as" in lieu of save, locate, rename........
Or maybe a better folder system.
That being said, it isn't a deal breaker.
1- So, is it safe to say that you can technically have 18 samples per preset sound?
2 - IS THERE AN ACTUAL OSCILLATOR SYSTEM OR ALL SAMPLE BASED?
3 - CAN YOU DIVIDE EACH OF THE 3 "parts" into 3 different MIDI patterns?
4- Is there any Granular aspect going on? I feel like I hear it.
I am envisioning Fugue machine driving a dark symphony of sorts.
I feel like if I truly get more on the back of the house I can use it better.
I think it's going to have to be a third party that opens it up for folks. Guessing is partially a language issue. I've resorted to his in-app manual, which is complete... but often the language use is confusing. It's going to take someone like the PoD dude (sorry, I don't know his name. I wanna say it's Rob). He's got a real knack for taking complex stuff and making it much easier to digest. And, he happens to love the app too.
It was his PoD videos that got me over the first hurdles when I first started playing with Dhalang. As you know... another one that can appear a little cryptic at first.
In front of our houses:
Slow Children At Play
Yeah, I bought it during the Black Friday thing for £9.99
Me all over the place. It sounds WONDERFUL. I was not expecting to like this one. But programming it?!?!?!?! I'm still wresting with the various iterations of programming Rozeta - I just don't have the cranial capacity for learning to program SoundScaper right now.
But man alive, does it sound just lovely or what?
It's a tough call. I personally think it's one of the most innovative iOS apps of 2017. And, it's very playable in a conventional way too. I know you're a bit more into making actual songs I think. The presets are good too. However, where the real magic/voodoo/innovation happens with this Synthscaper is where you're crafting new, evolving sounds from your own samples. More sound "design" really.
In some ways, it's kind of similar to LayR, in that you're blending various parts that interact with each other, and can evolve into strange places over time. Yet, they're very different. Being able to work with my own samples and have various samples interacting with each other and morphing into new things over time... is easier for me to work out than it's been with LayR. LayR is awesome too, but I think your need a different kind of expertise and skill set to make that one shine. I have to mostly rely on presets that I tweak and customize. I'm baffled how users like Brice and RedSky manage to beat that one into submission, but I think it comes down to a hellava lot more experience with sound.
With Synthscaper, I can start with samples that I've recorded, that I'm already familiar with their characteristics, and start from there. With LayR, starting from scratch is a bit more daunting, at least for me.
+1. Me too. Nailed it.
Yeah thanks! Exactly I’m mostly into making full songs so lately I’m cleaning house of anything that’s distracting me from that focus. I had my eyes on Guitarscaper since I’m mostly into guitars, Acoustic and Electric. So I wanna get rid of all samples that sound like bleeps or farts etc IYKWIM so I wanna get more guitar samples preferably my own but I’ve had a hard time finding time to record my guitar. But I thought about this one with guitar samples. We’ll see hopefully it goes on New Year sales?
This one is not “just another synth”. It is something really impressive and the new randomizer makes it even more impressive. It is absolutely usable and I’m sure you will be able to use it in your compositions...if me assume you like to have your own sonority
I'm sure it would/could be incredible with guitar sounds. Do you have MitoSynth? It's also extremely great at morphing/synthesizing your own sounds into new playable synths. Where Synthscaper is different, and an order of magnitude more complex, is that you can have more parts within the synthesis you're working on that are more dynamic, and moving. There's also the "stage" where you've got some control the illusion of how the various parts sound in a virtual spatial realm.
A nice year end sale might push me to get it. I had my eyes on DDMF EQ and Guitarscaper but you guys don’t help with this appholism
Well, I know you know, as well as I know, that not all of these apps will be a great fit for all of us.
You say you're more interested in actual, finished songs. I'm not. I don't even have the slightest interest in crafting songs, lyrics, or groovy dance tracks.
I am interested in making custom sounds, and sort of composing them together. But, not so much with a beginning middle and an end.
For example, last night I was playing around with the Scythe wavetable app. Started with a couple of sample parts I got out of Droneo, then started worthing with them in Scythe until I have two new presets. They were similar enough that I could use them together. One I labeled "suspense" and the other "angel moan". I then imagined a scene that they'd play under... someone walking into an old decaying house just after twilight, but still barely enough light to see. As we move through the house with a young man, or woman... you notice the walls start moving in an organic way, and everything appears to be made of some liquid. There's a heavy mist that sort of moves in sync with the waves and pulses of the walls and ceiling. Then you begin to hear something coming from either within the structure, or beyond that sounds like ominous otherworldly sirens beckoning to draw you in deeper.
Or, something like that is what I'd use the sounds for.
In short, a different end goal than the craft of finished songs.
I'm a believer in the idea that there's an application for any tool for any end composition as long as you're creative enough.
That being said - am I going to grab SynthScaper for a sick bass line on my electro-funk tune? Absolutely not - not the right tool for that that I've found. However, using it for the cosmic breakdown after the bridge before the final chorus? ABSOLUTELY - it's perfect for atmospheric-type sounds. The application of said sounds is up to you, the artist.
I’ve just spent a while with the preset Madness. Just playing and altering settings. Not going anywhere, just meandering along. My wife just gave me that knowing look at my serious face and knew I was deep in.....somewhere
I like the fact I can lock the randomiser into using my own samples only.
The only problem I have is that I’m tempted to save every randomly generated patch, since they’re all so good.

Yeah that’s the truth...hardly seems random they are so good!
Probably the closest iOS app to Absynth.
This.
Unbelievably rich sound. Like playing a planet-sized space organ in a cosmic cathedral. Just dripping with texture. But do I know what doing in the app? Nope...
I would like to hear Your mysteries, incredible sounds and something special from SS. Now what I hear is only nice solid sounds and see the app which is very difficult to manage (not only from this forum but also from Ipad Musican group)
So, convince me, please

Snap.
App is clearly brilliant, alas I am not. I periodically have ideas that I want to do with this, often fail to get anything useful, yet have tremendous fun trying.
I'm thinking of doing some meandering droney things. Seems a shame not to do something with all these weird and wonderful patches the randomiser keeps giving me.

Yes, the randomiser is great.
