  • I still have R8, don't use it much, but its portable usefulness means I cannot sell it. I am using Focusrite 18i20 as my regular interface. Also have behringer ADAT interface connected to that. Not very portable though.

I have many channels when at home but still only stereo when portable

Portable multichannel audio interfaces that work with iOS are still a rarity. The TE TX-6 looks great but it's outta reach and it has no MIDI ports.
Fyi, I ended up getting a Tascam US800. 6 mono inputs with phantom power plus S/PDIF I/0.

Inside the unit, there's enough space to fit a flat shaped 5000mAh USB power bank and a CCK3 (if you're into DIY hacks) for recording or mixing outdoors.

  • This works well on iPad. 8 channels and quite cheap.

    Behringer U-Phoria UMC1820

Yes as well as 10 outs, plus coax and optical digital in and outs, midi din in and out and extendable via ADAT.

  • The Tascam looks perfect. Wish I'd seen that when I was shopping for an interface!

Looks like a handy device. But maybe more as the front end of a digital mixer, than a recorder? You can connect all you gear, no need to use an extra mixer, or constantly switch cables. I assume Ipad cannot record multiple audio streams at once, because of limited RAM memory, or data transfer speed? Or can it? Not that I need it.

It most certainly can. Depending on the application, it can record 16 tracks or more at the same time.

You can easily record all 8 channels at once.
So far I've only used Audio Evolution Mobile for multitrack recording but I'm sure other apps will do that as well.
