This is great news!
Im 99% sure Ableton were waiting for the standard to be agreed on before integration in Live. Can anyone more knowledgeable confirm that Push 1 also sends polyphonic aftertouch? I found some comments confirming that Push 2 already has this functionality.
I have a feeling that this will be the year of MPE (in addition to being the year of AU3!) so I’m hoping for an avalanche of apps adopting it now that it has been agrred.
Great news. And I knew this was coming. Interesting, they used to say MPE stood for “Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression”. Now, apparently they have changed it to “MIDI Polyphonic Expression.” An acronym within an acronym. The folks at NASA would be proud!
Yay! Now I have to save up to buy a Linnstrument.
Future is now.
Great news!
You can start with the two Ipad MPE controllers: Geoshred or Thumbjam.
Yeah true that I have both and they're great.
But on iPads they lack 3 of the 5 dimensions.
They lack a depth dimension. What are the other two dimensions in MPE? Thumbjam has two tilt dimensions, bringing its total up to four.
They lack velocity and after touch and release velocity. I guess newer iphones might not, but their small. Along with tactile feedback.. they're cool but a Linnstrument looks like the bees knees.
Ah, I didn't know there were three depth dimensions. Thanks!
You could easily program aftertouch into one of the ipad MPE apps, but velocity remains a challenge.
Does Linnstrument do all five?
Aftertouch, glide, and slide can be done in Geoshred or Thumbjam; press and lift cannot.
Does Linnstrument do all five? I would guess it only does velocity, aftertouch, and slide. You can probably do glide with one of the extra controls on the side. But does it do lift?
Isn't after touch based on pressure amount? How can you do that on something that doesn't sense that ( the ipad)?
The linnstrument operates with all the known touch senses.
Yes, only iPhones can do that
And more even with the sensors.
But of course they are small and the lacking tactile feedback is really „weird“ to get fun and feel for playing. Like i said often, velocity abd velocity release also don‘t work very good and/or latency free.
Polyphonic pressure/aftertouch works fantastic with 3D touch.
Also i think even most MPE apps like Model 15 don‘t use this. There are just a few which do that.
Now iOS could need also a DAW which „fully“ supports MPE. There is not one yet.
Equator is of course the most flexible here since you even can add 4 individually curves/shapes for each of the dimensions to parameters. But things can get easy out of control and MPE is not always usable
I mean that it fully record all dimensions and automations of each channel etc. exactly how you play them. No iOS DAW do that. Even some desktop DAW‘s not (even Bitwig did/do not). Live sucks here.
