  • I am sure we will see more widespread adoption in both DAWs and instruments now that it is an official standard.

I hope we see more low cost MPE controllers. Linnstrument has transformed the way I make music but I recognize that I was lucky enough to be able to make the finances work. I think the sensel looks interesting.

the sensel is very interesting. I still can’t believe how sensitive it is. I played a flute patch last night, and I was able to play extremely quiet , and , but then at the same time move through notes , and then press harder and get the flute really loud and breathy, and back down to quiet so effortlessly. it really sounds like i’m playing an actual flute. it blows me away.
I’m actually seriously thinking about getting a second sensel morph so that i can exspand my keyboard range instead of using the octave switching. it’s so cool.

  • I really hope that native instruments gets kontakt setup for mpe soon, because that would be truly amazing .

It works already.....with workaround at least.

There are a few videos about it on you-tube as well. But you might need the full Kontakt 5 for this.

They lack velocity and after touch and release velocity. I guess newer iphones might not, but their small. Along with tactile feedback.. they're cool but a Linnstrument looks like the bees knees.

Ah, I didn't know there were three depth dimensions. Thanks!

You could easily program aftertouch into one of the ipad MPE apps, but velocity remains a challenge.

    Does Linnstrument do all five?

Garageband does quite a good job with velocity

Was that with the Noise app? (And if not, playing what program?)

Isn't after touch based on pressure amount? How can you do that on something that doesn't sense that ( the ipad)?

The linnstrument operates with all the known touch senses.

Aftertouch onThumbjam and Animoog is implemented with the key slide along the Y axis.

But that is CC74 (Brightness) in the MPE „standard“.
Also IPads are still just 2 dimensional and far away for MPE control.

  • I recall seeing an MPE thread on the midi.org forum, involving Geert Beevin (developer for Linnstrument, later Moog). There was quite a bit of opposition to MPE for various technical reasons - typical nerd stuff - one dev preferred a different architecture, another wanted to use some kind 3rd party library, etc. Looks like Geert and the pro-MPE devs won this round.

Great news. And I knew this was coming. Interesting, they used to say MPE stood for “Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression”. Now, apparently they have changed it to “MIDI Polyphonic Expression.” An acronym within an acronym. The folks at NASA would be proud! :D

    Hah! Brilliant.

Yay! Now I have to save up to buy a Linnstrument.

You can start with the two Ipad MPE controllers: Geoshred or Thumbjam.

But on iPads they lack 3 of the 5 dimensions.

They lack a depth dimension. What are the other two dimensions in MPE? Thumbjam has two tilt dimensions, bringing its total up to four.

On an iPhone, 3D touch is used to generate pressure messages (what we call KeyZ) as well as velocity. For iPads there is a setting to turn on what we call KeyY touch which is used to generate Velocity, and KeyY can generate both CC-74 and Channel Pressure.
