  • You don’t have to get a Macbook to use LPX. That’s ridiculous. Just use it on your Mac Mini, like I do.

  • Logic was what got me into making music with a computer. As an old-timer, I wanted a DAW that made sense to me, a virtual representation of a multitrack studio, and something very affordable. I wanted a professional tool, but my ambition was no more than to use it as a hobby. I wanted a score editor. I wanted a powerful piano roll and sophisticated MIDI event editing. Flexible time and tempo, fluid arranging options and organization, full-featured mixer and automation, easy comping, audio editing, edit to video, keyboard shortcuts for everything... the list goes on and, not to be taken lightly, extensive information available on how to get it all to work. The loads of content included was huge when I was getting started, and adding Alchemy, Drummer and Drum Machine Designer, Flex Pitch, Alternatives, MIDI FX, Smart Tempo... for free... it just got better and better. If you then want to move up to some other plug-ins, like NI Komplete for example, the system becomes even more powerful.

It's a deep application. The implementation makes good sense to me, but nothing this capable is going to be completely intuitive. Like all things worthy, it's an investment in time, and I don't even take advantage of everything Logic can do. I don't know other apps like Ableton Live. Though I've learned some things about other approaches to making music, I'm still an old-timer.

I think that if you're not sure you really need Logic, then you probably don't. At the price, it might be worth getting it and just taking some time to see if it works for you, but if you have to buy a Mac, that's obviously your major investment.

  • In the meantime, there’s always Sonic Pi

Ill take Logic Pro on my 13 inch MacBook Pro over a mac mini any day of the week simply because of the portability of it. There's nothing ridiculous about throwing my MBP and my Ipad in a bag and having Logic on the road. Or if I want to collab with someone I take my Apogee duet and my MPB and maybe my Apogee mic and get a song knocked out that way.

No, but if you didn’t have a Macbook and you wanted to run LPX, you don’t have to go out and buy a MacBook for it. Just use your Mac Mini.

i agree, but he didnt state that he has a Mac mini, he said he was considering getting a MBP, the original poster did anyways.

  • Is it worth it?
    Consider this:

    Reaper - $60.
    Customize it to your workflow.
Amazing scripts that do incredible midi and audio FX.
    Software runs extremely lean.
    Runs VST's and AU's.

After spending $60 - plenty of cash to purchase your fave libraries ;)

Oh I just naturally assume everyone must have at least one Mac Mini lying around somewhere. Have you checked? Maybe you have one.

I remember one fell of an apple tree in our garden last autumn, but our dog was quicker.
    He just munches anything.

  • @Strizbiz : Correct, I decided initially to try and go the TimCook route and do everything on IPad Pro 12.9.
Note: IK Multimedia has announced that in the future, Sampletank would become an AU3. When that happens , iOS music will be taken up a notch I think.

  • On the question is Logic Pro X worth investing time it the answer is an absolute yes. The amount of loops, synths, effects, Drummer, etc that comes with it is will worth both $200 and going thru the learning curve (which is fairly steep) to master it. Although its targeted as a songwriting app it can do anything - I have it on a MBP, and I record my band and mix with it, do fun drum/bass stuff, record my MIDI drums, MIDI guitar & bass (jamorigin), at the same time as having a dozen other apps open (including safari & chrome each with ~30 tabs), and it rarely hiccups (ok sometimes i have to quit chrome).

If you don't feel like subscribing to a video help service (i used some video's on macprovideo for the first 6 months or so) there are a ton of video's on youtube.

The built in compressor sounds actually good, alchemy is a beast, Drummer is awesome, and there are some good quality loops there for inspiration. Get a good interface (I have a focusrite 18i8 and an older saffire pro 40, both work great) and you are set.

iOS has some great stuff - synths, drum machines, the low price point of software, the innovative apps, but using it as a whole recording studio can be pretty frustrating at times - I use Auria and garageband, and while they work everything seems a bit fragile once setup. I tend to use Apollo to send audio from iPad --> Logic and mix everything inside Logic.

Oh yea, you won't get charged another $200 to upgrade every other year either...

Maybe, but Logic offer much much more content in this case and much better tools (my opinion).
Also isn´t the 60 dollar Reaper the one you can´t use for commercial stuff if you wanted.
Anyway, Logic Pro X is the best value ever for a powerful music production environment if you need/want that kind of workflow. Also you get huge updates for free where others want upgrade prices for the same price as Logic itself.
Logic has some really outstanding gems no other DAW has (also again my opinion since i tested all available DAW´s on earth :) ) like Space Designer, Delay Designer, Sculpture, Alchemy and even the old looking synths like ES2 are amazing (one of the fattest and most punchy unison ever). Now there is even more like Chromaverb which is as good (i find it even better) as Fabfilters Pro-R and/or other expensive reverb plug-ins.
The EQ´s are also good as well as the other mastering and mixing tools. No need really of external software for this these days. Then there is much much more like great Amp and Bass Amp Designer, Phat FX (Camel Phat), Step FX (Camel Space) and and and....
We know that Apple can afford this but no DAW really can compare with this. The only question is if you are on mac and/or like the workflow.
There is also a long term thing for me that i doubt Logic goes anywhere in the next years while you never know how well the other survive (Cakewalk anyone?).

  • Also isn´t the 60 dollar Reaper the one you can´t use for commercial stuff if you wanted.

    No

  • edited February 2018

to be precise the $60 license is valid upto a certain revenue (by music) per year.
This figure is so high, that you'd gladly pay the full license if your tracks ever return that amount o:)

  • @thumslapper, I think you, among others ha e convinced me! Thanks ! And you also, @Cib !

  • Why can't Steinberg launch their Cubase on Mac App Store without a dongle - like their did with Cubasis?

  • Apple should release GarageBand, Logic Pro X, Final Cut Pro X, iMovie, Photos, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, etc. on Windows

  • Thanks to all . I’ve never seen a thread like this on Audiobus Re iOS vs Logic.. Overwhelming response in favor of logic .

  • You won’t find many negative opinions on Logic. Closest is maybe a diehard Live fan saying go Ableton but even they wouldn’t say it’s because of an issue with Logic outside of a personal workflow preference.

If you have the money and time, it would be impossible to waste on Logic. ios production is a compliment to it but still maybe a decade away from any mix of apps combined actually being comparable to Logic.

It’s not close for a variety of reasons, mostly hardware related.

  • An app is only worth what you actually do with it but, forgetting that, the individual components that come with Logic are the equivalent of thousands of dollars worth of software. It's an anomaly that exists only because of how it fits Apple's business plan, and that they can afford to practically give it away.

  • I think I’m just gonna play the drums now...

  • Incredible commentary .. appreciate so much guys

I just made an incredible purchase that included Logic Pro X, Final Cut Pro X, Motion, Compressor, and MainStage for $199US!

I stumbled across it on Reddit. I feel like I hit the lottery because I had been saving up to purchase Logic Pro X for $199, which in itself is a great bargain, but then had a need for Final Cut Pro for editing drone footage.

I was amazed to find out how tightly coupled Logic has become with GarageBand. When I clicked on some of my GB IOS projects on my iCloud drive on my M1 Macbook Air the default program to open them is now Logic Pro X and it opens and plays them seamlessly!

    Here's the deal:
