I’m very much interested in this topic as I am experiment with this topic on my own right now. So far what I found to be best is:

Midi track in cubasis > midi out to synth
Audiobus audio of the synth > audio track in cubasis

A alternative is routing the midi thru Audiobus depending on the synth capability.

You do have to pick your synth very carefully.

I’ll try to post picture tonight if needed.

    OH, yes please

This is a exemple of in Audiobus (not much to see). iMini audio going to Cubasis. I don’t use Audiobus midi most of the time.

After that I add a midi track with no instrument selected and the in the midi output I select iMini.

Then I would record some midi in the iMini midi track. When I’m done writing I would record the output of iMini in the iMini audio track for effect and mixing. Don’t forget to mute the midi output when done.

I hope this helps. If anybody can help improve my workflow please let me know.

But sadly, I could not find a way to route MIDI within Cubasis to a AU Synth that was added from AudioBus!

I tried with kauldron and it was easy.

    2. Do the same over AudioBus. This has the benefit of being able to use AU Synths too!

I may be missing something, but Cubasis loads AU synths like a champ. No need to use Audiobus for hosting AUs if you're using Cubasis anyway.

The point was, to route the MIDI from a MIDI track to an audio track.

    And this is not possible.
You cannot select an AU here.

And when you add an AU to a MIDI track, you need to freeze the track to get the audio, right?
Or use it in AudioBus or AUM....

It's sometimes difficult to the see the right way :)

It's always possible to freeze the AUv3-Track to make it 'audio' and move the audio to a dedicated audio-track.

  • @tja I think you are getting to a good spot with this. I would say it is more convenient and easier to setup if you do AU in Cubasis and Freeze to get the audio from the midi. For me, the less apps I have to involve, the better. Quicker and easier to setup, less screen switching, and better resource management-wise.

AU can present problems sometimes when freezing or rendering, so if that is the case, use your AUM workflow and live record the AU playback to AudioShare with AUM. If this is actually your preferred workflow, it will probably work fine for almost all cases.

@ecou I was looking at your posts with running iMini in Audiobus then into Cubasis, and it didn’t make sense until I found that you really have no other option with iMini. It’s either Audiobus or some weird Tabletop/AudioCopy workflow that I wouldn’t want to get into, so yeah, Audiobus to Cubasis is probably the best you can do there.

@tja, nice setup. Note that you can use MIDI channels to target up to 16 separate AUM channels / hosted apps from Xequence directly without using Audiobus. There's no need for multiple AUM MIDI Destinations, you can just use the MIDI Channel filter in AUM.

And I can confirm that Multitrack MIDI Recording is coming to Xequence in the next update, and it will be great :)

    Ah, yes.
I totally forgot the channel filter in AUM.
So, just Xequence and AUM would be the smallest generic solution.
But adding AudioBus still gives this great preset sharing, App switching and remote control. So I think that this is the better package.

Of course. I wouldn't have added AB support if I didn't think it was great :)

    This is fantastic, many thanks!
Feel free to make it an IAP ;)

It will be a moderately priced IAP, yes.
