edited November 2013 in General App Discussion

Just saw that as of today Steinberg has sent Cubasis 1.7 to Apple for release. Should be available any day now! This is the version that includes IAA support.

  • ...and hopefully iAA as EFFECTS too!

  • Any word on other updates/improvements?

  • My Christmas wish: Dear Steinberg, please let Cubasis receive midi messages properly and give us the chance to edit them all...

I tried to put a funny troll bait line in here about BM2 being better than Cubasis, but it wouldn't format correctly. You'll just have to imagine it, but it was very very funny. Trust me.

  • No automation (unless its a Christmas miracle) until 1.8 from what I can tell. I have asked about using IAA as effects but no word yet.

  • i would instabuy ALL iAA Effects nodes if they implement it.Ok,there are not much i guess but Echo pad and the AUFX are still on my list...

  • What, you still doesn't have AUFX and Echo Pad?? It's soon 2014! ;)

ahem....* hiding under a stone now *

  • What I'd really like in the next update is an audio engine that doesn't cut out when I close my iPad cover. I have to keep closing and re-opening everything, which is pretty irritating. Still, having Cubasis and all these beautiful apps on my lap is nice enough I suppose. Could just be a hardware limitation, so hopefully when I get the Air in a few weeks it won't be an issue.

I still don't understand IAA. Is it basically Audiobus but without the central interface?

  • @sickmoth, pretty much except that it's less flexible from what I can gather (one channel at a time).

  • @boone51: no,that's not true.You can open as much iAA's your iDevice can handle.But only one instance per app!i mean,only ONE Nave,ONE ISem,ONE Magellan at a time.Or did i misunderstood you with that"one channel at a time"?

  • @j_liljedahl have you investigated the Auria plugin path at all? Boy howdy would I like to be able to run more than one instance of AUFX dub.

  • @syrupcore: Checking that out is on my TODO, and I've already talked with Rim about it. Just need more time... as always.

  • Steinberg confirmed the support of IAA FX nodes!

So,i'm gonna get myself an iTunes giftcard now to buy Echo Pad and AUFX finally ;-)

  • No, you're absolutely right @Crabman. What I was trying to say (poorly) was that you cannot have a source app be its own input (ala Auria with AB in input and output channels). That's my understanding of it right now anyway. I could be totally wrong.

  • heres a complete description how to use IAA in Cubasis:

    http://www.steinberg.net/fileadmin/files/PRODUCTS/Apps/Cubasis/Cubasis_Help/ACCESSORIES.html

By the way,Morris found and posted it over there so he's indeed still alive and spot on as usual :)

  • Thanks for spotting this. The IAA integration in Cubasis seems to be complete. At least in the theory ;-)

  • Wow this looks good, can't wait to try it!

  • Hello all,

With this update, users can use Inter-App Audio apps as insert/send effects, as virtual instruments and as audio inputs, making it the best Inter-App Audio implementation out there.
Several other improvements, such as the redesigned in-app help, round up the package.

    Best regards,
    GN

  • Thanks. Hope it shows up in the app store soon.

  • I always like to see Cubasis get updated but I don't understand the excitement over IAA.We already have Audiobus which to me seems more flexible and more extensively supported. I would have rather seen automation and other improvements first.I understand that these DAWS have to keep up with each other but are there any advantages of IAA over Audiobus? Mabe I'm missing something.

You can't use Audiobus to put Effects in your DAW send or insert rack (yes, there are some workarrounds but nothing beats the ease of use when you load it just in your sends or inserts like a normal plugin in your PC DAW).Second (and for me even more important)is the SAMPLE ACCURATE timing of Midi (sync).I can't tell ya how often i struggle with that bullshit called"virtual midi".It's often quite shaky and i even don't mention midi sync. That's even worse.Third, you can save/open your song with IAA's loaded (i tried it with beatmaker).Although the last used preset is not saved and you have to manually select them.Fourth, you don't need to open an EXTRA app for all this goodies. It all just happens magically in your DAW.Should i go on?In theory there are quite a lot of advantages but it will take some time for the developer to figure out all this goodies because of apples superbad description of the new features. But i totally agree,Cubasis is nearly one year old and the absence of ANY automation in such a DAW after all the time is embarrassing.

@Jomazz Plus you can open Nave on channel 1 and Alchemy on channel 2 and record separately

  • edited November 2013

plus you can open as much(different!) effects and instruments as you want (limited only by your device)and not only 3 inputs and one FX for all.

  • @Crabman I agree with you, IAA would make things much easier , somewhat like our desktop DAW. It the new kid on the block , but I know in time developers would more understand the power of IAA and how it works .
Don't get me wrong I love AudioBus but IAA concept would make things much easier for the iOS musician

  • Thanks everybody for the info! Crabman, so referring to your second point IAA will let the Arpeggiators in Nave or ISEM or Sunrizer(for example) sync more rock solidly to Cubasi's clock? That would be a major improvement over watching the bpms on these apps jump all over the place.Hopefully the upcoming Audiobus update will have some nice suprises!

  • Hope Cubasis adds a way to set the buffer size when it's launched as an IAA host without Audiobus.

@Jomazz: yes, that's what it's supposed to be.As far as i know beatmaker still uses virtual midi to drive the IAA's (and BM supports only instruments,no effect nodes yet) so that's only a half baked solution and shouldn't make a difference in terms of midi sync. But it's something i did not test myself yet so i could be wrong.IF i understand the IAA description from steinberg correctly they make use of the IAA midi and therefore should be a sample accurate midi sync (only for apps that support IAA of course).IF they implemented it well.Apple released only a very lame description for the developer on how to implement it well and all of them have to figure out more or less on their own now.Time will tell...
