Discussion for possibly making the AudioBus sound programming thing a regular event?

We recently did a very quick pack of sounds for the Moog Model D.

This is discussion on if we should make that kind of thing more regular on here.

I will start the ball rolling:

  1. Would this be of interest to you?
  2. How often would you like to see it done?
  3. How long should it run for each time?
  4. How big should the sound packs be?
  5. How should we choose what goes in?
  6. How should we choose the app to use (keep in mind some apps have awful save systems!)
  7. I think that one person should run it and that person should be changed between a pool of people each time - what do you think?
  8. Any other polite suggestions?

    1. Yes
    2. When awesome easy to use/tweak apps pop up
    3. Around 1 week I guess giving most people a change to get the app and explore it
    4. Depends on how well the app in question handles patches?(Max 10 per submitter?).
    5. If there is a set limit for the pack pick at random from the submitted patches, if there are still patches just create additional packs (2 packs are better than one and it gives everyone an opportunity to be part of it).
    6. I think this will happen automatically if it's an inspiring app (I had no plans to even create patches for Model D it 'just happened').
    7. I suck at compiling patches so I'll leave that to those who are more 'organised' LOL.

That's my take on it for now :)

  • Wow this popped up while I was typing up a long winded post on the other thread :D

  • When I program sounds I generally create one or two at a time, not a whole batch. Would single patches be acceptable?

Yep as we had people doing single patches on the last one. I think it would be a bad idea to make a minimum amount.

1 patch is better than no patch at all so a big YES from me...

Can you copy it here? Lol

  • Just have to figure out how to get Lexington patches out into the wide world.

I’d nominate Fruitbat1919 if he’s up to it, he was really on the ball with this last pack. I’d like this to become a regular thing, it’s a lot of fun, is a great way to bring the community together, and everyone benefits at the end with some new sounds. I’ve been thinking about it a bit and these are my 2 cents:

1- It might have to be a monthly event/activity... I guess it’s a good thing it’s almost a new month since it seems a lot of people are itching to be a part of this :D
2- Whomever is in charge of compiling the pack each month announces the synth/app... or perhaps does a poll with a few options to vote
3- I agree with @richardyot, something like 5 presets per person is a good number. That way it allows everyone to participate without having a million presets but also makes for more selective submissions.
4- I wouldn’t worry about versions to be honest, I kind of like the idea of seeing the complete pack at the end of the deadline, it’s more of a surprise.
5- There needs to be a deadline or submission closing date (maybe 2 weeks?)
6- Is suggest setting up a separate email account where the presets can be emailed and managed.. it might be easier for people who don’t really use Dropbox
7- Personally I don’t mind having names (or maybe 3 letter initials at the end of preset names), it’s not about egos but I think it can actually encourage communication and interaction between forum members.. @Fruitbat1919 and I had some great conversation during this last pack.

Anyway those are just some brain farts I had about the thing. Either way this is a great community builder and I think might help grow the forum too. :)

Yep it’s a big issue with this whole idea - some of the apps have awful save systems and some are not going to be easy enough to share their patches. The minute sharing patches becomes a chore, people won’t bother

Lexington's a great idea! The better sounding and more interesting Gadgets are perfect for this I reckon. There is a way to save copies of your own presets to dropbox, so it must be within reach.

I think the minimoog patch sharing has been a hit because everybody's excited by the same thing at the same time and most people know what they're doing already (i.e. not much of a learning curve). I've been rather distracted and only have one bass patch worth sharing but I can't seem to get it out of dropbox - proving your point there @Fruitbat1919

More complex synths like LayR, Infinite, iVCS3 and the like might not work so well for this, although I'll happily be proven wrong.

  • This is a great idea, I’m just finishing of my demo for the Model D Pack 1.5, and there was no way I could get through all the patches, so 50 to 100is good for any bank, plus I will demo any pack we do here and link it to the Forum thread for download, hopefully get some more traffic and new members too

Thanks @thesoundtestroom, look forward to your video :)

  • Thoughts so far:

    1. Thinking initially monthly only if there is a suitable app available.
    2. While internet was there, I’m dubious if we could make a pack up of five sounds each with the amount of people that showed interest. So to start with, if we set a deadline only. No maximum will be set unless there is a lot of people entering
    3. Each person will get at least one of there entries in the pack, usually much more unless a swath of people enter lol.
    4. Will run another one soon as a test to see if there really is interest.
    5. I was thinking of the first three weeks in any month to post your entries and the final week for myself (or whomever runs it that month) to compile and get it to Doug to do his thing.
    6. I’m going to contact and ask openly on here to see if any app devs would like to sponsor with an fx app prize, which will be given randomly to someone entering (except anyone who is involved with running it).

    Thoughts?

Count me in!! Maybe we could make a poll or suggestion which synth go next.
    What about DRC? :)
I (and other hopefully) would be also interested to make a demo track or two with these presets.

The poll is a good idea. Any suggested synths would have to be tested to see if they had a suitable save system in place first.

  • Monthly is good.

I strongly recommend limiting the number of patches per person. People can create as many patches as they like, but should only submit their five or at most ten best ones at the end. Otherwise I guarantee you will get some people submitting 20 or more each time and then it has to become someone's job to whittle them down and that will quickly become a chore.

It should run every month, and be focused on a single synth each time.

There will be enough interest to keep it going. And plus it will be a great platform for exchanging ideas and knowledge.

I agree. I think however, if the interest was low on any given month, higher amounts from one person would be useful to balance those that only want to enter one or two. Out of the 11 people that gave sounds last time, only a few were larger than 5. Obviously we are hoping for more with running it over a longer period, but if by chance things didn’t happen that way, we still want enough sounds to make a decent pack of between 50 and 100.

How about we run it in partnership this time @richardyot. One of us can make the pack and both of us can help promote it. What do you think?

  • We have go ahead from the AudioBus Forums and support from Doug. Any helpful devs have a spare fx app that we can put up for grabs? :)

This forum is evolving and is central to iOS musicians... How about a ‘patch’ section like what’s on KVR?

  • Having it end on a Sunday night would be great for me. I started making a few patches on the train to submit to the Model Dfest but wanted the quiet at home on the weekend to tidy them up.

  • What an awesome idea! :) <3

Noted. Will be more organised and give plenty more opportunities this time :)

  • Exciting.

  • It would be cool. I downloaded the moog pack and there are very cool patches in there. I didn’t get a chance to do any but hopefully I can share at some point.

I'm all for group patch creation and compilation, but if we do so, there needs to be an organized place to store these patches--Possibly a patch repository here? Maybe @MichaelTyson could create a new forum category so that it would be easy to search just for patches? Or possibly one designated thread just for posting the patches that we can bookmark and search for the patches? Something like that. I would like there to be an extremely easy and organized way to find and download the patches, without creating too much work for @MichaelTyson

For the monthly Sound Fest, we will have a thread. For recalling the patch banks later on, some other system will need to be in place, as the links don’t last forever when sharing from Dropbox

  • I think this project and the limited challenge projects like the recent GadgetLE challenge are really helpful to learn new skills. I learned a lot about Gadget trying to make something for that challenge, and got familiar with Model D in record time trying to make a decent patch.

I didn’t even successfully submit anything to either, but I still am glad I made the attempt because as a learning experience it was great.
