LMAO yes wouldn't we all... Apple likes to boast about the number of apps on its App Store. What they fail to mention is that most are identical in functionality to each other except in the areas where one lacks what the other has. It's infuriating. If you decide to start a rant series, I'd be fully in favour of that also I suppose. But I think your tutorials might be better in the long run
Indeed. Any reviewer is entitled to point out the pros and cons of an app, but negative spin against someone dipping their toes in the water is not your style.
Do we know how much effort was put into this app? Maybe you know the dev and can answer that. If it was his first try, then maybe much of the effort was just learning to code or code for iOS. Or maybe he knew how to code but has no experience with music apps. The limits could be because he couldn't foresee what musicians might want.
People like LucidMusicInc crap all over it because the app's not for them, but the reason it's so cheap could be that the dev is new and this is what they've got so far. It's a big component of iOS. Many amateur programmers create their first apps for iOS just like amateur musicians create music, and that's a good thing. No reason to discourage them.

Well said, Mr Lovadamusic. This app could go to very useful places.
Thanks, Zen. I don't know what the dev's plans are. The melodies it spits out are interesting from a programmer's standpoint, whatever the algorithms are. If the app could be developed further, with some more user control, it would feel more like a music tool to me. If not, it's still kinda fun to see what it comes with.
It's an interesting debate.
While reading, I remembered another generative app that used to fascinate me and was very successful back then: Gestrument. I would write many generative melodies with that one and I still have them amongst my AudioShare files.
Fortamento seems interesting because it delivers you the whole randomized project: chords and lead ready to export on midi. All you need is just press on a button. Either you like what you hear either you don't...
I don't really know if I Would end up using it that much so I understand totally Jakob's requests who asks for more interactivity with the screen.
But if you think about it. So many famous apps were generative in the glory days of IOS music creation, apps like TC-11 for example, and that was right before the DAWS, grooveboxes and Korg synths invaded the market....
I'm not singling out this app in particular for being a waste of time, I'm saying in general a lot of apps out there like this one and many others are. I then pointed out which ones were good.
I am doing the community a favour by telling everyone what to buy and what NOT to buy since I've already tried nearly all of them. Go ahead and buy this app and every other cheap app out there though. It's your money to spend.

Thank you so much.

Absolutely. Right now it is a fun app, which if used with third party apps can produce some useful output. If the dev is encouraged enough to keep on developing, then an iPad version with more functionality could be on the cards.
I certainly don’t buy every inexpensive app out there, if that was even the point. Nobody is forced to buy anything, and Jakob’s video was enough demo of the app to help us decide. My point was that we don’t know the dev, but little quirky inexpensive apps like this are a good thing about iOS, both for developers and the users who get something out of them. So we don’t all see it as you do, but it’s possible your rant about it and the App Store may have helped someone who was on the fence.
I wish I had the time and energy to learn programming on iOS and make an app like this just for fun. Of course there are many techniques that go into melody creation and development that can be systematic, are logical and lend themselves to coding and that could be randomized to various degrees. Every parameter could be open to the user and optionally be set to degrees of randomness. I’d like to see what it could do because it’s just in my head. A programmer can continue to evaluate and tweak the results they get to refine the output. I wonder how ambitious the developer of Fortamento is.
If a developer puts an unfinished/crippled app on the market as a consumer it's my entitlement to criticise it if it doesn't live up to basic expectations. Frankly I'm getting fed up with seeing incomplete bug ridden apps made by people who think IOS music is just about pushing buttons and fiddling knobs and faders... a line has to be drawn at some point. We need to put a little fear into the developers if they try to hit us with proprietary (incompatible) formats, charge exorbitant subscriptions, or just release a crappy cheap app. I'm not going to take it anymore!!!!

The forum’s own SJW has spoken.
Developers beware!

Don’t like it? Don’t buy it.
There is nothing wrong with this app. It makes a simple melody and chord progression, and exports a small midi file that opens and plays fine in other apps. It gives you the option to tweak the generated melody in app before exporting, which is an unusual feature for this type of app.
If you think it is going to write a song for you, then you are expecting a bit much. It makes 4 bar, 4 chord melodic phrases, and it does it well. It is cheap, but it is not crappy at all.

A point which some have missed. All the dev has to do to improve that particular feature, would be to implinent landscape mode to edit the whole melody.

Indeed. The dev has the basis of something, and is testing the water. He hasn’t broken any promises, or made outlandish claims. Slagging the app off for what it has not yet had a chance to become, is just nasty.

Geez last time I try do do you guys any favours... going back to my safe space for awhile.
I’m really enjoying this app a lot. Love that I can get something good going quickly. Love that I can then easily edit that and make it my own, then easily export out into Auria Pro, Genome, Caustic, etc. and the export out to SunVox is really fun!
Best $1 I’ve spent in a good while.
Have to agree @skiphunt
Brilliant way to quickly get sketches started in SuVnox!
Ah, yes, the entitled consumer. Not only do you have the right to criticize, you have the right to be wrong.
I don’t get the piling on on @LucidMusicInc. I also don’t get why the hell anyone would pay for an app to make melodies for them. That’s kind of pathetic? Isn’t it?
@ExAsperis99, one of the best books I've ever read on the subject was by Wayne Chase, How Music Really Works. I ought to read it again. In it, he explains how to avoid the common beginner mistakes when writing progressions and melodies. In any key/scale you've got a finite number of options, and even more finite when you factor in your musical genre and what sounds good in it. So apps like these that incorrectly produce chord progressions, i.e. completely randomly, sadly miss the mark by a long shot. I wasn't being hyperbolic when I said this app sounded like crap and I'll continue to stand by that assertion.
I don’t have any problem with @LucidMusicInc. Quite the contrary, really. Personally, I think the app is great for a first attempt, a cheap simple app that makes simple melodic phrases. I just don’t want new devs getting discouraged by someone unfairly calling their app “crappy” like it doesn’t work. So I was just trying to relate the facts of my personal experience with the app to balance the discussion.
It’s not that I or anyone else needs an app to make melodies. I am just interested in this area of music technology and the application of music theory in theses sorts of apps.
@LucidMusicInc I read that book by Wayne Chase as well. It is definitely a good, informative read, although it really is focused on traditional songwriting with a goal of radio play, to briefly summarize its viewpoint. You have to figure out how to apply what he teaches to newer styles of music, compositional styles, or non-western styles on your own.
I am not sure why you would say that this app creates wrong or completely random chord progressions or melodic phrases. They are in the correct key and mode, and are pretty tame and ordinary sounding to me. There is nothing chaotic or dissonant about these generated ideas.
I know I am contradicting you here, but I do consider your opinions about this stuff equally important to my own or anyone else’s. Even though I may disagree, I still value your point of view, especially since it helps me see things differently. Peace.

No THIS is a civil and fair reply. Well done. Bravo!
And now I must get back to the important and valiant task of rescuing stray dogs
Ok in the spirit of fairness to the developer, if they're even aware of this post and care what anyone here has to say... here's what they ought to do in order to improve the app.
Implement everything suggested by @jakoB_haQ in his video, landscape mode, iPad support, editing the entire melody, per bar or multiple bar looping, opening and editing projects, etc.
And what I'd add:
better sounds firstly. My ears were bleeding listening to that organ...
A drum machine and metronome with swing. Seasoned EDM producers may or may not go for something like this but for the beginner guitarist or singer, this might make an accompaniment for practice tool.
Choose between randomising the chords or melody or both
Preset progressions with option to randomise the melody (e.g. Blues, jazz, pop, etc.)
Longer than 4 bars. Maybe 16 bars max and users can choose between 4/8/12/16 bars,
Copy paste between measures, progressions or melodies or both
Real time midi out so that the user can use it in some experimental performance or recording situation
Personally I find black themes depressing. BM3 has the right balance of light and dark but in nearly every other case I've gotten bored of completely dark themes. Make it look more interesting.
That's all. If the developer is serious about this app they might want to try using the competitor apps, mentioned above and see what features they can fit into their app. If not, thanks but no thanks and best of luck.
@skiphunt It sort of looks like the possum got dosed as well.
He kinda looks like Jakob doesn’t he? lol 😂
It’s not? Oh shite!
Kinda looks like he’s “fingering” that lil fella’s head, and “having fun doing it.”
These are all +1’d by me. Maybe consider sending this list of great suggestions to the dev? Or if you don’t care enough to be bothered, would you mind if I sent it to them?
