A one, a two, a one two three four..... :)

But seriously, if Candy is feeling up to putting another album together, or perhaps one of the other ‘real, world’ studio workers might be willing, then I’m sure this community would respond.

What would be great, is if Apple or a large developer also got behind this idea.

  • In the iTunes Store their is music for sale by a Doug Wood. Is is it the same Doug?

  • Hi AB Community, If you have not grabbed a Your own copy of the Doug Woods Tribute album on Bandcamp could you please buy it ASAP and support it to help our brother out? Even Doug himself contributed a song for his own tribute. There is so much talent on that album and so much love for Doug on there. Thanks everyone for helping Doug out and enjoy a really special and wonderful album to boot! Let’s show him some love!!!

An accidental quadruple post? A first for the forum. ;)

The possibility of ‘Doug Aid 2’ as in a new album, is being explored. No doubt the result will be posted here.

As always thank you all for the kind comments, the support, all the new Patrons who joined, everybody who donated, it’s all been brilliant and more appreciated than you could possibly know.

Normal service will definitely be resumed in a couple of days as soon as I have sorted out my stupid blood sugar levels, that have obviously gone into the twilight zone because of the boosted steroid dose, but at least the pain goes away.

There are lots of new videos and tutorials to do too.

Some developers have been trying to send me apps for review but iTunes Connect has been down for a few days but that now seems to have been fixed😃

I should hope so. I mean, people will be getting all fidgety as a withdrawal symptom. ;) Some among us may even buy the WRONG Apps. Arghhhhhhh.

  • Take all the time you need to take good care of yourself Doug! Feel better soon! I hope you don’t don’t have to pay for the apps you review from the Devs? Looking forward to your return when you are ready, all the best from Canada with love, Susan

In all seriousness, I lost count of the times I’ve thought, nah I don’t need an app....only to see Doug’s review, and find myself tapping Buy.

Sales of music apps will dip, while the main man is in refurb mode.

  • Since Doug is, arguably, the main reviewer for iOS music apps, I would like to see some editing a la Jacob Haq style. I know a suggestion like this can be taken the wrong way, but it seems like in order to pay the bills and fund your passion it is important to scale your business. This means that when you operate in first or second gear for a while there comes a time when you need to take the initial interest and trust you have gained with your audience and then reorganize what you are doing so that you can keep that momentum and start to attract a larger audience, while improving what you deliver to your present audience. I have bought Dougs benefit album and I appreciate what he does but I often find that I am skipping through his videos -- which to my mind suggests that he could do a little editing. Maybe even split the presentations -- so that if he is comfortable just hitting record and mucking around (which has been working to a significant degree) keep doing that, but at the same time work on some videos that are more focused and technical while being presented as polished. I don't watch much Red Means Recording anymore but initially I was attracted by the art of his presentations. At the time I didn't own an OP-1 and didn't want one, but the way he was making his videos drew me in.

An open suggestion, take it or leave it. Sending you good vibes @thesoundtestroom

I jest, but I hope y'all know I love me some Doug Woods. Nothing but good vibes over here!

@thesoundtestroom I'll keep plugging you in my videos, for what it's worth

I think most of Doug's audience watch and follow his videos precisely because of his informal, friendly style. By trying to compete against the technical polish and depth of Jakob, or one of the others could simply dilute both of their audience. It'd also take Doug a lot longer to produce his videos, most likely meaning he'd make less of them.

Personally I watch a Doug video first, and then if I buy the app - Jakob's for a bit more technical depth. If I'm on the fence oafter watching Doug's, I'll watch a Jakob, Pantsofdeath etc. until I've made a decision.

Currently they all compliment each other, which works for me as a potential customer.

Yeah I was hesitant to say what I did because I am well aware of this aspect of what he does. I tried to address this point from several angles in my post if you read it closely. That being said, I was focusing on the idea of scaling ---> it's all in the post so I'm not going to waste time rehashing it.

  • @futureaztec i agree with your constructive critisism, videos could be tightened up for a wider audience.

Exactly, I love hearing that ‘welcome to the sound test room.’

By trying to compete against the technical polish and depth of Jakob, or one of the others could simply dilute both of their audience. <

Yes. Also, Jakob has his preferences and stuff he likes to do which are quite specific. Whereas Doug has a much broader canvas.

Doug likes pretty much every app that he reviews. I've only ever seen one negative review from him, and that was hidden away on the Patreon channel.

  • @Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr I only demo stuff I like, I can’t see the point of showing you something I don’t like and giving a bad review just because I don’t like it, it seems a bit counterproductive, it may well be a great app.

I always tell developers exactly that if they ask me to review an app, I say that if I don’t like it I won’t demo it.

I make the videos with very little editing for many reasons, I would rather you see the whole thing with no edits so you can get an absolutely genuine look at the App functioning as it should without numerous crashes etc etc and me just restarting the app and editing the video, how many times have you watched a “produced” pro demo that makes the app sound incredible only to buy it and think well it looked better than this on the video.

Another reason is the time it takes to make a video like Jakobs, he spends days days editing, he'll spend two days on a script, I just can’t do it, it’ll kill me.

I've always said the Jakob makes amazing and incredibly detailed videos, he is the best at what he does.

Another reason is that I just love to play with synths, DAWs, Drum Machines, Effects and all the cool stuff that I like to demo, I like the variety, I like to show you all the stuff I love about making music with an iPad.

I don’t think I could cope with putting out only one demo a week😩

Service will resume on Friday with a demo of the quite frankly awesome ASS Objeq

Sure, but I take that as accentuating the positive. :)

Doug liking an app alone doesn’t sell it to me, it draws my attention. If what I am shown makes me think I could use the app, then I buy.

That's purely your assumption that a tightened up video would reach a wider audience.

Its a universal truth that you can't please 100% of the people all the time.
Keep the videos as they are and they will appeal more to group X than to group Y. Change them and they will appeal more to group Y but less to group X, and there will then be comments from people saying the videos should be made more informal for a wider audience.

Yes, quantity really does matter when it's one of so few sources covering a huge number of products. Jakob makes great videos, but he covers a much smaller range of iOS music apps... and how many has he posted in the last few months? If your time and energy is being taken with anything else, it's hard to make a steady stream of free videos.

I'm a Patreon, if that's how you say it, of both. I've benefitted from both. So bottom line, how many iOS music apps would we never see demoed if it wasn't for Doug? He usually gets right on the new ones, and that's a unique service many rely on, including the developers. I also know what it's like to get up every day dealing with health issues. Time and energy are far from unlimited. I hope Doug can keep cranking the vids out.

Well, it seems that it's not paying enough in the current form, as hard as that is to hear. I like the charming, rambling style. But people are busy: they grab videos to get quick information. A 19-minute video for someone in a hurry is a tough sell.

"Do what you love" is the mantra of every Ted Talk wannabe. But there's the unspoken bullshit of doing what the market demands as well....

Even Cuckoo's mega tutorials (like the 90+ minute exploration on the Digitakt) come with a table of contents with timestamps that allow viewers to jump to relevant material.

It's weird to be giving unsolicited advice like this, but we all want the Soundtestroom to succeed.
