What is the potential market for Doug's videos? If he made more highly produced videos that satisfy the kind of people who want everything for nothing, and feel entitled to free information at their fingertips, quickly presented so they don't waste any of their much more valuable time, is that audience big enough to make it worth his effort? Is it worth sacrificing the quantity of videos he provides? Is it worth him abandoning what he likes to do? iOS music-making is a small niche market, so I don't know. Even if he had the time and energy to make thousands of tightly edited masterpieces, could he get adequately paid for it?
Yeah I am glad that @ExAsperis99 chipped in here. @thesoundtestroom I really love what you do and I understand the various points for keeping things the same. However, if you remember my whole point is about scaling business. If the goal is to pay the rent, while remaining passionate about what you have to offer I think taking just a bit of advice here might help you. It is not just Jacob Haq that runs this model successfully. It is Red Means Recording, Cuckoo, Andrew Huang (1.3 million subscribers), where as @thesoundtestroom has 22,000 subs.
A lot of the time I watch these channels not so much for the content of what they are presenting in particular -- I just find that they way they present their material is inspiring and creative.
There are a number of points being made here though. First and foremost @thesoundtestroom says "I don’t think I could cope with putting out only one demo a week😩."
Remember I suggested dividing your time a bit. So you make 9 freeform videos for every 1 edited video. I personally do not gravitate toward Andrew Huang's style so much. But if it is a matter of improving what you offer the customer in order to have a little less short term fun and that turns into generating a lot more revenue I would advise that you at least give it a shot once.
But I respect an artists source of inspiration and if you start to loose that then it is a problem. Again, just clarifying the kind of advice being given, but I am not saying that on these grounds this advice ought to be taken.
I agree completely!
I think the service the Soundtestroom provides is excellent — and let's not forget that Doug and Jakob were among the first to do this. Shouldn't that count for something?
But when you're beholden to companies like YouTube or Facebook — they can tweak the algorithm at their whim, and if your business model relies on them, you're screwed.
It's a shitty model for someone with this kind of devotion and insight to have to rely on a tip jar. I have sympathy but no answers.
Exactly. The content and slick edits match the style of presenting that appeals to you.
But there is an audience that tunes into Doug’s vids because of the way he presents. Friendly, informal, honest, and fun.
I don’t have a lot of spare time on my hands, but I love settling down for 20 minutes with a mug of tea and my morning toast to watch Doug’s latest epic.
Slick, fast edits would just give me indigestion.
I think the problem is producing videos for a relatively small audience. With a larger market for what Doug is into, he could make and sell videos to companies that pay for that educational material. OTOH, YouTube gives producers the opportunity to make the kinds of informal videos Doug likes to make. If it can bring in some money, however it happens, I think that's a plus. What sucks is that he apparently doesn't get more government assistance, which many of us believe is the necessary safety net that should be in place.
It looks like Jakob Haq has half the subscribers Doug has -- though he once was part of the soundtestroom and hasn't been independent as long.
There are YouTube producers who have something else going for them -- younger entertainers and people covering a broader range of music topics. Though I've seen and liked some of what they do, I'm not a subscriber to the ones you mention as successful. If Doug were to appeal to a larger audience, it would mean less attention to iOS. While I would certainly respect Doug's decision if that is what he wanted and felt was best for him, for many of us here, it wouldn't be the best of news.
Thanks for explaining your process. It certainly makes sense to me.
Here’s the other thing all these other YouTubers like Andrew Huang, Cuckoo, Red Means Recording aren’t really iOS based channels, yes they all feature iOS but mainly it’s hardware and desktop stuff and it just drags in a bigger audience, most of the hardware demos I have done do extremely well, I have videos for the Novation MiniNova pulling almost 200,000 views, my midi connect video, almost 300,000 views, Microbrute videos, 100,000 views, why don’t I just ask for review hardware?
I have a genuine and obvious passion for iOS music production in all its many brilliant forms, over 1000 iOS related videos on the channel, I've invested a lot of time and effort into my love of the music app and I hope that you have all in one way or another enjoyed some of it to some degree.
How could I possibly just turn my back on that, especially since you don’t ever turn your back on me.
Bottom line.
I'm in this for the long haul.
Nowhere did I suggest that you abandon reviewing iOS apps, nor did I encourage you to expand beyond iOS. Unfortunately a couple people here have done the disservice of scrambling for reasons why not to make improvements on what you are offering. I find it truly mind boggling how when someone takes the time to present a detailed -- take it or leave it -- set of suggestions that begin by acknowledging various counterconsiderations, people just grab whatever point suits them and do not return the same courtesy by addressing the actual content of what is being said.
I made a suggestion that you try something out while continuing to do what you do, and pointed to some other people who are succeeding with those sorts of models. Is it really fair to suggest that the only reason those people are doing well is because they review hardware and not because they also put in the good hard work of polishing their presentations? It seems to me like a very reasonable set of considerations I offered out of love and care. I mentioned that you might try one video with editing and make nine more in the usual way. That's it. And somehow it turns into me advising you to turn your back on things?
Anyway...Good luck either way Doug. Appreciate all your hard work and individuality that you bring for free. Seriously.
Surely things can't be THAT bad, you'll regret that video later on. "I was young, I needed the money " won't be a good defense.
My thoughts are with you Doug. I am too “skint” myself to offer much financial support. I am actually considering going busking when the weather picks up, just to make ends meet!
Here are some tracks that my son and I recorded, just to cheer you up.
He has a rare voice, and a gift for music, but is actually diong art at the moment....

Doug's presence on Youtube has definitely been valuable for developers and users/producers alike. Watching Doug's videos has been a catalysing force for me to go out and buy an app or an IAP many a time. And, in fact, sometimes when I'm stuck/run out of ideas, I'll often go back to Doug's videos and watch how he plays a certain patch. He's always just on the verge of a good idea before he moves on to another. So sometimes Doug's videos can also show you what's possible with an app you've already got. I'd say Doug's given away a lot, not only in terms of his own time but also in terms of marketing and sales revenue for both Apple and the app developers. I'd like to see that sort of thing continue. The work Doug has already done speaks for itself, for that reason and so many others, some financial remuneration from those who can afford it is completely warranted in my opinion.

Also, this would feel like being sold something, as opposed to an open and honest review.
One of the main things with Doug’s reviews is that they are Everyman Friendly. Other revisers, tend to be much more tightly focussed on an area of expertise. Great, if that is also your thing, boring if not.
OK, was waiting for @bluepunk to return from his road trip to ask his permission that we might do a dedication for Doug. So, for the next month, till mid May?, all purchases from our new Bandcamp will go to Doug Woods' PayPal account:
shitandpissed.bandcamp.com
And, so this doesn't look like a complete cash in, I will match any incoming purchases (the amount that we get paid) up to a yet to be decide limit (depends on my bank balance in the month of may but I will try and honour them all)
Hoping I'm not going to be making a similar video next..
If I had the gear I would try to do some videos for / with Doug to help out expanding the income, but I don’t have any gear and with my illness I’m notoriously unreliable as I don’t know when I’m well enough to do stuff.
It’s good to see people making suggestions. I do think any you tubing will get harder over the years. It’s a two edged sword - currently small iOS market and not over saturated presenters at this time, vs if the market grows, many more channels will come.
Lots of good thoughts on here though...
RTM already have a track we would like to donate, if a place to do this can be found.
