Recapturing the sparkle
After making a conscious effort to actually finish some track ideas..... I've been listening to early renders of ideas.
In lots of cases I just can't re create the original "magic". Maybe a lesson in sticking with a track longer before moving on to the next ?

Yeah, that can be an issue for me too. Sometimes I actually can't remember HOW I achieved a certain sound or effect... Other times I'm just feeling the vibe like I was when I first came up with it.
On the other hand, there are many times when it has helped to let a track "cool off" for awhile and then come back to it with new energy or fresh perspective.
I guess that's just part of making music. You finish what you finish, and maybe that's your subconscious inner musical voice coming out... The mind creates what the mind wishes. I don't think anybody finishes every scratchpad musical idea.... Better to let your creative side decide what it wants to work on and let the juices flow where they will
Time allows me to not be so involved so that I can be honest with myself--I realize that most of my stuff sucks....
My stuff sucks too but I can still listen to it and say "Hey, I did that!" with some pride because I know that none of my friends or relatives can do better.
I can create some great parts of a song, but it's the construction of a piece of music that tells a story that let's me down..I must have have over 200 decent beats and hooks but never a finished journey...
I think... It's just a thought.. But it's much harder to create a song with out any vocals, that carries any great emotion.. Wish I could sing lol

err, what he said :-)
I sound like an alleycat in pain when I try and sing lol... Auto tune just won't cut it...
What work flow do you lot use? Like... intro , verse 1 , chorus, verse 2 etc.. It's bridges I have trouble with, going from one vibe to another... What do you guys do?
I finish all my songs. Anything longer than a twenty second song bores me ;-)
I've only written a handful of songs with lyrics, but so far the structure just comes as I write it. I'll usually do a verse or two and a chorus and then see how it all fits together. If I feel it needs another verse, either for length or to finish the "story" or whatever, I'll add one. Bridges are tough... I kind of use the drop method where everything scales back before a solo or the final chorus.
So, you enter the song with the intro, then give an indication of the chorus with a verse then drop parts out and build up to a big chorus? Sort of thing.. It's so difficult...
Yeah that sounds about right. A couple examples:
This one actually has a bridge I didn't realize before the second chorus... and then a solo before the last chorus
This one has a drop before the big chorus like you said (for better or worse haha)
Amazing thanks Jesse, that's given me lots of ideas about structuring shit... Good one...
My one piece of advice is not to get caught up with "rules". Just let the songs come out as they come out. Worrying about whether or not it's "right" or other people will like it is pointless. In the (paraphrased) words of PantsOfDeath: Make a lot. Share what you make. You will get better as you go.
Your stuff is brilliant Jesse, reminds me of the originators of dance, New Order, also some Depeche Mode in there also, outstanding...
Hate to burst your bubble, but innovative as they were, dance existed before New Order.
Thanks, that first one was for an 80's contest and I was trying (very hard) to sound like New Order/Joy Division/Depeche Mode. I was also putting on my fakest Brit accent (which all the Brits here will probably laugh at). Thanks for the compliment!
That's ok Jesse, us Brits are all fake anyway.
shit @jesse_ohio, I need to finish that remix! Got 90% of the way and life clobbered me.
Yes! I've been wondering about it but didn't want to bug you haha
Paul B.. I saw this documentary the other day that fingered New Order as the forerunners to the Rave scene.. That electronic repetitive drum thing...
Rather Acid House, which then got harder and turned into HardCore and Jungle and then split into Drum And Bass and Techno, Gabba Psytrance etc...
It's like the UK rave scene went two ways.. The mental BPM gabba and hard trance and the other side Drum and Bass and Garage
Oh, the rave thing, maybe, but dance is as old as rhythm.

Gotta drop the RRR's Jesse ;-)
My daughter once asked me if I can roll my Rs. I said "Not while I'm sitting on it...".
I rarely finish my songs. I always get stuck, leave them to cool off, and when I get back to them I can never get back in the zone. Half of it is lack of patience. If I can't get good ideas down I lose interest and move on.
Part of the trick is to actually set yourself a timeline to finish a song. I work well to timelines. This makes me focus on completing ideas.
Stay off internet websites and just write or compose. Focus. Controversial but it works for me.
Experimentation. We all do it but when you are in that mode it makes it difficult to finish ideas. Hence why some people forget the buzz they were on. If it's a good buzz, you need to push it with a 3-4 minutes song structure. Don't just loop. If you do loop, get 10 variations of the loop if possible. Who said music is easy
A bit of music theory opens the door to a wonderful world of never ending ideas. It works for me. I know all the diatonic chords in a key so if I'm in Dm, I know if I push the track to F and C for example, I break up the monotony of just grooving in Dm.
This is all subjective but you got to find what works best for you.
Whoah... Thanks Frankie.. Let me just Google 'diatonic' I'll be back in about 3 weeks...
