Oh the frustration .... iphone DAW??

I really want to put together and mix complete songs on my iphone. On my ipad, no problem, I open cubasis and start writing. But on my phone there is nothing. Or is there, what do you guys and girls use for iphone DAW ?besides garageband( blah)

The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • There’s also Music Studio and FLM3

SunVox is almostthere It's light on the CPU and also on storage. Mature and stable too.

I say almost there, because I have yet to try overdubbing a guitar track or something like I would on a desktop DAW. in theory it would be done by adding a sampler module in SunVox and recording said guitar track as a sample, then triggering the sample module from a pattern on the timeline.

  • im testing audio evolution mobile. but it keeps crashing. waiting for a new update. when is nanostudio 2 coming out?flm3 is that fruity loops?

Yeh. It makes me too sad. I love ImageLine and hate to see how stuck in the mud that product is.

Yeah, I've been working on a song in SunVox on my iPhone. One thing that sucks is the keyboard shortcuts don't seem to be available on iPhone, and because it's not an iPhone X the display is a bit limited compared to an iPad. OTOH, it's easy to zoom and navigation between timeline, module view, pattern view, etc. by finger swipes is surprisingly intuitive.

I do plan to eventually copy the project over to the desktop SunVox to check out the keyboard shortcuts. I also plan to overdub a guitar part.

  • oh I should have said i want to record and mix audio as well. not just midi

  • I'm still waiting for a great iPad one.

agreed, but at least cubasis is a good enough one for now.

In that case Garage Band or Gadget.
I think I'd be too annoyed at the workflow to have patience with anything else.

I should have put Garage Band in my previous list. It's probably the best option all things considered. I just never think to use it.

Despite my troll face it is super close for me... I just want Cubasis to...

    -timestretch midi objects
-timeshift audio with 'tape mode' for non-smoothing, non pitch maintaining speed change
-have an audio browser (Reaperish, but mostly for browsing and dropping in selected ranges of long wav files, I don't need all the bells and whistles)
-to not deselect the 'select' button when you do a banding box select

(Sorry for hijacking an iphone thread  )

  • i love gadget, but not for recording audio. i hate the workflow of Garageband and it’s restrictions

  • For me FLM3 is the best. It’s just painful that it doesn’t support auv3 - if they added this it’d be perfect for my needs. They moan about audiobus and iaa but don’t add auv3 which makes no sense at all. The interface is good enough that I can make music whilst walking along.

However when BM3 comes to iPhone (god knows why it hasn’t yet) I’ll switch just because it supports auv3

  • I still can’t figure out why all the major Daw developers do t just make a 4 or 8 track version. of their DAW. It would be great to have that on a phone.

  • I have Rotor on my new iPhone, but I must admit to not actually using Rotor yet, even though I thought it was full of potential when it came out.

  • Gadget is great for producing music. I'd imagine that it kinda sucks for recording it. Plus it has massive walls all around it, which has it's benefits but also lots of limits. Xequence + AUM seems the best bet for now for the closest-to-a-real-DAW approach, but I haven't tried everything else myself.

  • Add Beatmaker 2.

  • @eross said:

You can currently mix MIDI tracks and Auidio tracks on an iPhone with BeatMaker 2.

    Agree with that!

Best I have used so far for audio and midi is BM2 and garage band

rotor intresting. can you record into it via audiobus or aum?

  • Beatmaker 2 was/is one of the best iPhone DAWs. You can record audio to a track in it, as you would expect in a desktop DAW, although behind the scenes, BM2 is secretly storing your audio track as a long sample - this shouldn't be a dealbreaker though because I bet all digital DAWs treat audio tracks as samples if you think about it.

  • The key thing for me about the iPhone is the portable immediate-ness of song creation. That said, the OP makes a good point about the frustration of iPhone music-making. I'm passionate about doing it with the iPhone, because I just don't (and probably won't) have the time to go into my music room and sit down and write music there. I'm left with iPhone or nothing. I've even considered going back to the iPad, but it takes away from the immediate-ness (There! He said it again! I don't think that's really a word!). So, I'm left with the iPhone paradigm, which, because of the lack of decent hosts, is left imperfect. Here's what I'm doing:

As others have mentioned, there are lots and lots of other options, such as FLStudio Mobile, Xewton Music Studio, Caustic, several grooveboxes, and several loopers, Xequence+AUM, etc.. But, the most complete systems/DAWs available on the iPhone are Gadget and Garageband. The problem with Gadget is that it is really messy to record long audio tracks, and the problem with Garageband is that there is currently a nasty AU rendering bug that cripples the app for anything other than built-in instruments.

I am bypassing all of this by using.............

    Harmonic Dog's MultiTrack DAW!

WTF?!?!? You've got to be kidding me!! You're insane!!

Well, wait a minute... Let me explain and we'll see in the end...

MultiTrack DAW does not have automation. I grant that. That's its weakness, and it is the reason I leave my phone and do mixing/mastering on my home computer. But here's what MultiTrack DAW 'DOES' have:

    • Rock solid, flawless stability--it NEVER crashes, and I NEVER lose my data. And even if I did, there are multiple ways of recovering it!
    • 24 tracks of solid audio multitracking (with freeze capability).
    • It's dead EASY to use--my handicapped cat, "Benny" with an IQ of less than 27 could probably master it in a day.
    • No, I'm just kidding. The cat is too dumb. But my mother-in-law could probably do it in a day.
    • It has great audio import/export features!

I record loops and phrases and compile them in MultiTrack DAW. Yes! loops and phrases is the key! There is SO MUCH available--anything you can imagine can be done with all of your instruments, grooveboxes, music tools, etc. Everything can make a loop or phrase of music that can be imported into MultiTrack DAW tracks and compiled to create songs!

Once Apple gets its act together and fixes GarageBand, I'll probably move back to that. But for now, nothing beats compiling everything in MultiTrack DAW (for me)!

BTW, MultiTrack DAW is going to be adding MP3, AU effects, (and possibly even iOS11 Files support if he can get the time) in a couple of months!

The most rock solid Multitrack Audio recorder available for the iPhone.

yes, you get it. it’s the immediacy ... immediate-ness... immedia...agh whatever. “ must make music now!” With busy days, sometimes I can’t find the time to get to my desktop daw or ipad. I’m looking to get 80 90 percent of a song, and then import that into my Desktop DAW and finish that sucker off. And hopefully if and phone daw gets to be better, maybe even the finish a song completely on my phone. aghhhh that sounds beautiful.
In the meantime Multitrack Daw i’m looking at you

  • if Xequence and Multitrack DAW had a love child, I’d use it with AUM and my search would be complete.

    that would be perfect

  • I wonder if the reason DAW devs avoid working with wave data is because people demand time-stretch/temp-sync post Ableton and it’s a pain to do...
