Purchase advise for IWavestation, SampleTank and iGrand. Are the high prices worth it in 2018?

Dear people from the Audiobus Forum!
I have been reading here for quite some time now and I am always positively surprised about the friendliness and professional competence that prevails here.

Now I have also registered here and would like your advice regarding IK Multimedia Apps and the Korg Wavestation.

Korg iWavestation
I love to use Korg Gadget and wonder if the purchase could be worthwhile or if I should save it. I already use Korg iM1 in Gadget.

IKMultimedia SampleTank and iGrand Piano.
Also here the question whether the rather expensive purchase would be worthwhile. I would like to use some acoustic instruments like guitars and ethnic stuff.

Unfortunately, the old reviews in the AppStore irritate me. The youngest seem to be 3 years old. The apps still seem to be at the iOS 8 level. The last updates were 2 years ago?

I use an iPad Pro 10.5 with the latest IOS 11.3.1.
Cubasis, Xequence, Gadget, various synthesizers, Syntronik, Ravenscroft 275, AUv3 effects and some other studio apps are already installed.

My music goes towards electronic Ambient, and old style electronic (Berlin School). Sometimes I would also like to work with acoustic (samples), therefore my interest in SampleTank.

Thank you for reading this far. I would be pleased to hear your assessment. Many thanks already!

Many greetings from Berlin and all the best to you! That’s a nice forum here! :)

  • Absolutely on iWavestation. Brilliant sound, one of the best .. especially for old style ambient electronic ..
Great interface, as with most Korg products. Stable, just as good as desktop VST version in sound -- can't go wrong with that one.

I'm personally not too big on Sampletank, though I do have it, along with Miroslav 2 IAP (Orchestral library) and a couple extra addons. I'd probably get more use out of it if the interface weren't so clunky to me... Sounds are nice, but I prefer Crudebyte iSymphonic for orchestral sounds. I use beathawk way more often for stock sounds , including guitar ...also Bs-16i with free and commercial .sf2 libraries.

  • I dont like sample tank a bit. Got it free ages ago and dont find it worth using for that price. I heard if you buy all iaps for shit tons of money, you might get few good instruments. I dont like any of the ik multimedia stuff really, somehow just feels cheap like their hardware. Cheap looking graphics, no au, and sounds i heard havent impressed me. Only sound i ever used from sample tank was a helicopter sound burried behind other instruments just to bring a hint of atmosphere lol. I heard the philharmonic iap has some good sounds, but imo the whole thing is overpriced and what ever apps ik multimedia does, there are better ones in the market.

I'll speak for iWavestation. It fills a very specific sonic area that not only covers those well-known wave sequences but also synthesized sounds mixed with sampled attacks. I would purchase it again but if you own iM1 already, you might want to watch a few youtube demos and see how much new ground iWavestation could provide for you, especially if you own all iM1 expansion cards.
Piano sounds are a very personal thing too, some may like iGrandPiano, others might prefer Korg Module or Colossus Piano.
I'm mostly using my own SF2 pianos and e-pianos in bs-16i and Audio Evolution.

  • Wavestation is worth full price but, it goes on sale about 4 times a year, seemingly, and it drops by half. Go ahead and get it now, if you feel that you must but, don't be surprised if Korg announced some new promotion in the next 30-60 days

Thanks a lot for your advise!

The main reason why I,m interested in iWavestation is the integration within Gadget.
I like the gadget interface and workflow so far but it seems difficult to bring some more soundvariations in. I hope iWavestation can bring more colors in the music.

I’ve heard that iWavestation have a quite hight lerningcurve? difficult to understand or quite ease to learn to create your own sounds?

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I own also iSymphonic in the basic version. I’m quite happy with the sounds so far.

    The interface from SampleTank?
Thanks a lot for mentioning it. If things get really complicated I loose all my enthusiasm. ;)

Thanks a lot for your feedback @AnimalHeadSpirit
    Im highly appreciate your help!

Since some aspects of this can be subjective, there is a free app called SampleTank CS that will let you try the interface and use some of the sounds for free to see what you think too. Thank you.

You are the third who recommended iWavestation. Thank you very much!
And thanks also for the hint for the sales. I can wait a few days.

    Very appreciate your post!

    I own also the expansions.
I’ve watched almost all yt about iWavestation but there are not so many. I can not really imagine how different iWS can be to iM1,

Anyway, I think I will give iWS a chance if not many other friends here dislike it for some reasons.

Piano sounds are a very personal thing too, some may like iGrandPiano, others might prefer Korg Module or Colossus Piano.

You are right. I use to play the Ravenscroft but sometimes I miss some brilliance? in the sound. One more different but excellent sounding Piano is on my wishlist. I found some positive feedbacks on YouTube about iGrand that’s why I’m asking for.

Thanks a lot for your friendly feedback @rs2000
    Many greetings to you!

  • I really love iwavestation but honestly I’ve been using Sampletank 2 way more. For me the Electric Strat Sound is my go to sound for Electric. I apply a bunch of AU effects plus one effect from ToneStack forgot the name but it’s the one that gives you various levels of pitch shift. Sounds amazing!

Would do a sample audio but maybe later.

  • I don’t think you can compare the cost of iOS synths with iOS sample based instrument IAPs. The synths are much less expensive. The real instrument sample based apps that should be compared with each other are Sampletank, iSymphonic, Beathawk, Swarplug, etc. The best deal out there though is probably Drumjam and Thumbjam. Supposedly Sampletank will be upgraded to AU one day as well which would be great.

iWS is very deep. If you like to create your own sounds, prepare for spending a respectable amount of time to get through all the pages with loads of modulation and tweaking options. I often modify factory sounds, sometimes I even create my own from scratch, and if you have the time, iWS can be a rewarding experience, not unlike programming my old D50 but a lot more raw sample material in iWS.

Piano sounds are a very personal thing too, some may like iGrandPiano, others might prefer Korg Module or Colossus Piano.

Honestly, when I really need a great piano sound I just use Kontakt libraries on my laptop. The iPad is still more like a quick and fun sketchpad to me.

Thanks a lot for your friendly feedback @rs2000
    Many greetings to you!

    You're welcome!
Sending best wishes to Berlin :)

  • Kiev in Gadget is a relative of the Wavestation class of synth.

Happy to see you here @ikmultimedia !

When I think about SampleTank 3 questions are in me.
    1) Is it stable within IOS 11.3.1. Any known problems there are not fixed within the last 2 years?

I own Syntronics. I already had a few crashes with it. I’m a little bit afraid to buy old stuff what is not perfect compatible with the iPad Pro. ;)

    2) Will I like the userexperience with SampleTank? Can I easily use it within Cubasis, AUM and other DAWs? Can I expect some problems?

    3) will I like the sounds? And what I have to pay for 10-30 Sounds what I really like for creating some nice music? I’m afraid to spend more than 100 € to find out that most of the sounds are useless for me. I don’t need more synths or drums. I’m just looking for good sounding natural String-Instruments, all kind of woodwinds, ethnic instruments and so on.

Think about Mike Oldfields Tubulare Bells. In these kind instruments im interested on the iPad!

The Problem is that I have to buy the app, paying quite a lot of money without knowing all about the risky things in that purchase. ;)

Many thanks for your feedback @ikmultimedia !

  • This is just me, but these days I seldom buy an instrument or effect app that doesn't support AU, and I seldom buy a standalone app that doesn't have extensive files support ie iOS 11 Files support, OpenIn, Audiobus, IAA, MIDI, etc. etc. etc.....

Of the listed apps, I sincerely hope to see Sampletank become AU since I have so much invested in it, and since it was promised, as well as their other apps (which we are still waiting to see fulfilled). Any status on this @ikmultimedia ? @IK_Multimedia ?

iWavestation will likely never get AU support since it is part of Gadget's closed ecosystem, but it is a great app and I really, really like it!

So, one has promised (but unfulfilled) AU support and one will likely never get it. You already have Gadget, so iWavestation should work wonderfully there. Sampletank has lots of sounds--some are very good!

It's a tough decision. Over all, iWavestation is much, much cheaper and integrates perfectly into Gadget, so I'd probably go with that right now, but they are both good apps. You just can't count on AU in any of them until you actually see it there....

When I use to travel I will not have a guitar with me. just my iPad and a little controller. I’m to old to carry so heavy stuff like a guitar with me. That’s why I’m very interested for specialty guitars and other acoustic instruments on the iPad.

A lovely sounding strat on my iPad will give me for sure a smille in my face.

    1) Yes, it is stable with the current version of iOS. You shouldn't be experiencing crashes with Syntronik so I hope you've reported those to IK Support so any issues (be it local or with the app directly) can be resolved.

    2) You can try SampleTank CS for free. It is not AU but is compatible with Audiobus and Inter-App Audio for use in iOS DAW apps

    3) I can't say as that is highly subjective. You can find more information about the available sounds (with audio demos) here: http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/sampletankios/index.php?pp=sampletankios-versions#soundcollections

3a) Doug from soundtestroom has done a lot of sound demos, including SampleTank and its available addons.

    Thanks!

  • I’ll throw another vote in for wavestation. A. It can be a simple or deep as you want. On the one hand you have great presets and a random button for weird sounds. On the other you have immensely detailed programming options. B. You already use gadget so yeah.

It’s one of those ones that I don’t always use but I keep coming back to. Nothing else sounds like it

  • Ha! @ikmultimedia ignored my post--it's impossible to miss, since it notifies you if your name is in the post. Now why would that be? Could it have something to do with my status request on the promised AU updates for Sampletank and the other IK Multimedia apps? I need to go search the forums and point out the links to the comments where it was promised......

I use synths for synth stuff and samples for real-world stuff. Next to using the real thing, samples are by far the best for real-world instruments. Physical modeling does well, but samples do better--except maybe for articulation.

  • This place will make you an appholic in no time! :o :# <3 o:)

But the most famous advice here is:

    Get them all! :D

I really hope ST2 gets the AU treatment just like Syntronik. Love these apps and I’m soooo glad I went for the 128 gig iPad 2017. Can run lots of AU effects to get the tone I’m looking for. By the way I’m just recently getting into using the Zivix JamstikPlus with ST2! So far it’s working amazingly great!

Well, I love adding lots of effects to get that vibe modulated Delay type of tone. Gotta make some time to do a sample clip for ya!

    Cheers!

You're welcome :) . I've only been at iOS music production for a bit over a year & 1/2 now, just now getting to the point where everything makes sense and feeling comfortable digging into the meat of apps like iWavestation. I only used it as a rompler up until recently, but I'm having more fun than ever now that I can sculpt it to do what I want and invent new sounds.

PPG Infinity is another excellent wavetable synth you might want to look into, while you're waiting on the next Korg sale. It's perhaps even more powerful than iWavestation from a sound design standpoint. I've only heard gushing praise and nothing negative about all of Wolfgang Palm's work -- definitely planning to buy his other synths soon.

This place(and soundtestroom) turned me into an app junkie, and since then, also a PC daw & Sampler/synth addict, so I've been all over the place, trying to learn more than a handful at once. Infinity is definitely toward the top of my list of my next synths to fully learn to utilize. Rarely goes on sale, so now is as good a time as any to buy it.

As for Korg Gadget -- I'm with you all the way on that one. Out of all 300+ music apps I own, I've been the most productive with it ... Lately I've been building up the foundation to my music in Gadget, then exporting the stems and midi to further manipulate in Ableton Live. Seriously considering buying the mac version, so I can get even more mileage out of it ... My only disappointment so far with Korg, is their completely wasted effort porting Gadget to Nintendo Switch (with no export, making it next to useless, imho) when they could have used that manpower to port it to Windows, where it would have already found a home on my primary audio workstation ;)

p.s. I didn't mean to sound too negative about Sampletank .. My gripes with the interface could certainly be considered subjective preference. Some people love it. I actually have a lot of respect for IK Multimedia's work on iOS , "just when i thought i was out, they pulled me back in" Syntronik immediately won my affection, and I went all in for the full collection of IAP. It's my go to source for meat and potatoes ios electronica sounds.

Best of luck with whatever you choose ...I'm looking forward to the next Korg sale myself, so I can pick up the DeeMax maximizer and finally have 100% complete gadget collection. Picked up everything else when it was 50% off, best money I've spent on iOS.

200€ is crazy expensive in ios and there are million and one ways to spend it better

Sampletank has natural sounding instruments and purely sampled vintage synths. It crashes because it's mammoth in size. @ikmultimedia might have been better off releasing separate apps for example the Sampletank, the SonicState, the Miroslav etc. But instead everything belongs to one app and it has become bloated.

Module and Gadget will soon suffer the same fate if Korg don't wise up.

For the most part however Sampletank is playable. It's a bit ugly and it's interface is very cluttered. But if you wanted to perform with it you'd get to wow audiences with its sounds.

Wavestation on the other hand has little snippets of generic sounds that can be shaped, combined in layers and sequences and modulated/morphed. The UI would be less of a problem to learn if Korg utilised the available screen size to put some labels controls on it. Instead I find you have to touch some arbitrary part of a sone object on the screen to get a popup menu to magically appear.

I don't know that Wavestation sounds really great with its presets. You can get creative with it and achieve a certain kind of a sound that fits well or rather is the defining sound of certain classic pop and dance genres.

True. They've crammed a lot of functionality into the screens with a "design over usability" approach and they could have done a lot to make in-depth editing more fun.
Incompatibility with their own desktop KLC Wavestation VST/AU presets makes it impossible to edit on the desktop machine and exchange presets.

  • I always wanted a Wavestation, but now I got this one, I hardly ever use it.

I have the the other apps, but no AU means they are not even loaded on my iPad anymore.

  • I'm a fan of Sampletank, some of the more recent sample packs are really good: for example the American Acoustic guitar samples are excellent, and the Pro Pack that came out with SampleTank 2 as well. And of course Miroslav 2.
