Purchase advise for IWavestation, SampleTank and iGrand. Are the high prices worth it in 2018?

  • Same here. I ended up falling in love with the Korg Trinity and I have it for so long. Although it mostly sits unused as a relic of the beginnings of touch technology.

I always wanted a Wavestation, but now I got this one, I hardly ever use it.

I have the the other apps, but no AU means they are not even loaded on my iPad anymore.

    1. iWavestation - go for it!
    2. SampleTank - Miroslav 2 IAP is fine, but ROLI Noise IAPs by are much better. Check these videos, if you have ROLI keyboard

On the other side you can use these ROLI sounds only in Noise app.
    3. iGrand - I prefer Ravenscroft 275. I have both of them.

Beathawk can give you a low cost alternative as well with a slightly better UI

In all honesty though if I could have changed the past, I would have only bought the Korg line of apps. The problem was they came quite late.

Sorry I indeed missed that and was not ignoring you, no need to go digging for posts. It will come, according to the devs but I don't have a specific timeline (and did not when posting about it previously).

Sampletank has natural sounding instruments and purely sampled vintage synths. It crashes because it's mammoth in size. @ikmultimedia might have been better off releasing separate apps for example the Sampletank, the SonicState, the Miroslav etc. But instead everything belongs to one app and it has become bloated.

Some sound packs were added as separate downloads for this reason.

  • Wow, what a great feedback you give me on my first posting! Thank you so much all, I’m very appreciate your suggestions and advise!

Actually I wanted to answer every post from you individually but now I will try to give you all feedback in a few postings. I hope I can manage that with the quoting, the system here is not yet familiar to me.

    Let's begin...

I’ll throw another vote in for wavestation. A. It can be a simple or deep as you want. On the one hand you have great presets and a random button for weird sounds. On the other you have immensely detailed programming options. B. You already use gadget so yeah.

And I’d always choose synths over sample based stuff

Thanks a lot! Great presets are useful for me because I didn’t have always enough time for expressive tunings. On the other hand it is nice to know that the Wavestation have enough potential for creating individual sounds from scratch. I appreciate both...

I use synths for synth stuff and samples for real-world stuff. Next to using the real thing, samples are by far the best for real-world instruments. Physical modeling does well, but samples do better--except maybe for articulation.

So glad I can use such amazing synths on iPad like Zeeon, Model D, LayR, Mitosynth, Volt and many others. But it seems difficult for me to get an good sounding Guitar like American Acoustic out of them. That’s why I’m interested in SampleTank.

By the way, I’m really impressed using also Syntronik for synth sounds. The possibility to layer different Sounds is great and I enjoy it.

Physical modeling is exiting! I have some SWAM Instruments I used to play with an ROLI Seaboard. They really sounding quite amazing! :)

    Hehe!
May I go this way. But I think I don’t need all from the SampleTank stuff. I need to find out which extensions are useful for me.

I’m afraid that I’m already an appholic... ;)

  • Short Answer:

IF YOU HAVE A BUNCH OF FREE SPACE THEN ALL iK APPS ARE MORE THAN WORTH IT.

Unfortunately the apps are done in a way in which they take so much space I can't even use all my STANK IAPs as well as SYNTRONIKA.

ALL KORG apps are worth it except the Gorillaz electribe IMHO.

    ALL OF EM.

If you had to choose and you have what you have, I personally rely on MODULE and the full catalog of IAP options for much of what I do in conjunction with Animoog.

IF you have some specific sounds are songs or style you are attempting to produce perhaps I could give some more options.

    I wouldn't limit yourself.

Beat Hawk has a load of great sounds and many instruments.

And synth-wise.....more options to count out there.

The more details you can give the more I can suggest in more specific manners.

iWS is very deep. If you like to create your own sounds, prepare for spending a respectable amount of time to get through all the pages with loads of modulation and tweaking options.

often modify factory sounds, sometimes I even create my own from scratch, and if you have the time, iWS can be a rewarding experience...

It good to have a piece of software what is able to create some incredible things when enough time is left to do all this tweaks. Sadly my time is limited in the moment because im a self-deployed person in the IT and a photographer too!

But I’m interested to go deeper in things I like. I just need the time for it...

Honestly, when I really need a great piano sound I just use Kontakt libraries on my laptop. The iPad is still more like a quick and fun sketchpad to me.

Honestly, I have NI Komplete Ultimate, a lot of EWQL stuff and more but I’m going to sell all this equipment.

I love the idea to minimize all my musical electronic to an iPad and a little controller.
NI Komplete, Maschine, Ableton and Push2 all these stuff is too much for me in the moment.

The best musical ideas I have at a sunny day under a shadow tree . So the little iPad with a KORG NanoControlStudio is perfect for me. 👍

    Many greetings to you! :)

For samplers, in iOS, I’ve been the happiest with Thumbjam. A lot of the sampler/rompler apps for iOS sound very dorky and 90’s to me, including iM1 (which I like, for the cheesiness of the sound). Thumbjam’s instruments sounded like the contemporary, multi sampled sounds we’ve gotten used to. Maybe not up there with something like Kontakt, but up there with, say, Reason’s factory NNXT sounds.

@chandroji If you are interested in guitars, there is a cheaper (and possibly better) way to go. Do a youtube search for guitarism, iFretless Guitar, and bs-16i. If you are actually wanting to play rhythm parts with chord strumming and stuff, there is no better app on the iOS market than Guitarism. I you are wanting to play lead parts, you may want to consider iFretless Guitar or bs-16i. iFretless Guitar allows you to do nice bends and slides, but you are limited to the built-in guitars that it contains. Bs-16i, is the best soundfont player on iOS. It is extremely flexible, it is an AU, and there are hundreds of free and commercial guitars available to purchase that have multiple layers and articulations and such. While Sampletank is nice (especially that everything it offers is all contained in one place), I think there are better guitars available. Consider doing a search for the "Ultimate Guitar Kit 2" soundfont. It is a free, dry soundfont. If you run it through BS-16i and then run an ampsim after it, you can make that soundfont alone be everything you want it to be, and it will sound better than any of the presampled Sampletank guitars, because it can become exactly what you are wanting, rather than being tied to a set guitar sample. ....AND it's cheaper! I'm not dismissing SampleTank, if that's what you are wanting--it's a great app and I have most of it's packages purchased. I just want to offer some alternatives that may do better for you.

I commend IK for actually participating on the forum. They have pm me after threads to even ask more issues about my concerns.

Lot more than I can say about many of the other “sacred cow” apps / developers

I don’t think some companies have ever even posted on here.

I wish I had a bigger iPad and I would use IK apps for almost all my needs.

I am also excited to hear more about the synth hardware piece!

I think IK is a stand up company with great products and representation.

    Just my opinion.

  • You know what, when a business remembers who their lifeline truly is, then they’re on the path to success!

It’s those businesses that forgot who their lifeline was, that are no longer viable or completely shut down.

I once told this to a friend who had a car dealer and was about to close. He was trying to milk so much fro each car sale that he started to lose customer and the poor word of mouth started to take its toll. As a close friend I suggested to ease off on the profit and make people happy. Long story short, not only did he couldn’t keep up with demand, he had to hire more sales people, get more cars. In his words: I made less money per car sale but I gained priceless “word of mouth” referrals, which in turn made more sales, which in turn created a loyal customer base.

    Moral of the story,

Word of mouth is gold! I applaud you IK Multimedia for remembering your lifeline: your loyal customer base.

    Keep up the good work!

It's always constructive criticism with positive intentions. Sometimes too much emotional investment and impatience makes some of the comments sound uncivil. This forum represents the vanguard of iOS music making and sometimes some of us get a little hot headed about trying to accomplish great things. But that's all part of the fun and excitement isn't it?

@ikmultimedia cautionary advice however, the next time you guys have a sale, try to plan it on a predictable day, e.g. Black Friday or summer sale or the launch of a new product etc. Random unannounced sales are not an effective way to win customer favour, it has the contrary effect.

  • Hmm, yesterday I tried to write some answers to all your postings but they were not published.

"Your posting will appear after proofing"?!?

    No idea why?
Is it not possible to write several postings behind each other?

Please let me know if I've done anything wrong.

    Thank you very much!

  • Strange, this article was published immediately.

I have the last post from yesterday still in the clipboard. Maybe the syntax was wrong? I had two quotes there to which I wanted to answer.

Sorry friends I like to give some feedback to you but the forumsoftware did not accept my posting.

    I will try it again...

  • Dear friends!
Thank you for all your contributions which I have read with great interest and pleasure. Meanwhile I have also read older threads on the topic in the forum archive and other websites, very interesting.

I will definitely buy iWavestation because it is compatible to Gadget. I think the app will give me the one or the other icing on my cake of music.

The iWavestation also seems to be an exciting field of experimentation for new sounds. I hope I will have the time to take a closer look at the app. I don't know yet if I can wait for a sale, maybe I'll buy it tomorrow. I'll see...

As far as SampleTank is concerned, opinions seem to differ a bit. I think I understand both sides. I can already see the pros and cons.

Many sound examples on YouTube inspire me. For an iPad app, many of the sounds sound first class to my ears. I would love to use some of the instruments in my music. There are many sounds I like.

However, what still keeps me from buying are two things.

    1.
I find the amount of IAPs opaque. I just can't estimate which expansions I really need. All IAPs are relatively expensive.

21,99 the update from STcs to ST
54,99 the All Sounds Pack costs
54,99 the Pro Sound Pack costs
21,99 the American Acoustic Guitar Pack costs

It looks as if I have to pay about 140,-€ for a basic and useful setup.

A lot of money without knowing if I can use the app efficiently. And that brings me to the second point that makes me think.

    2.
After all I understood about SampleTank so far, this is a multi-timbral app which can play a maximum of 8 sounds at the same time.

But I still don't understand if I can actually create 8 midi tracks in Cubasis which can control 8 different sounds in SampleTank.

And is it even possible to record the 8 audio signals separately in Cubasis for further processing?

After all I could read so far, it seems to be only possible to record all 8 instruments as one single audio stream in Cubasis, which makes a reasonable mixing difficult or even impossible.

I don't need SampleTank to play live but only for recording. It is important that I can use not only one ST sound in a project but up to 8 instruments. I want eight midi tracks!

I have installed SampleTank CS but unfortunately I have not been able to control 8 ST instruments with Cubasis yet.

It seems to become complicated to work efficiently with SampleTank and Cubasis. Or am I missing something?

If my fears should come true I can't imagine an expenditure of 140€ and more. As much as I like the good sounding sample selection .

Unfortunately I haven't found any meaningful tutorials that show what can be done with Cubasis and SampleTank or not. Neither on YouTube nor in blogs or forums.

I would be very happy if the SampleTank fans could enlighten me.

    Last not least...
Many many thanks to all of you who helped me in this topic so far. I hope I haven't asked too stupid questions yet. ;)

I am very happy that this forum exists. I think regarding IOS music this is one of the best places on the internet!

Have a great day, evening or night!
    Many greetings to all!

  • I always bought the packs when on sale. Don’t have to get them all at once unless you can afford it. I’d get the All Sound Packs first cause it adds a boatload if sounds. Then get the others. In this pack you get tons of Bass, Guitar and other good stuff. Highly recommend it.

Yes iWavestation is great for that. Creating your own patches can be time consuming, but worth it in my opinion. But if someone doesn’t have the time or knowledge to create sounds from scratch it’s also fun changing wavesequences (can also be done in Gadget to an extent), fx, etc. The ‘random’ button is fun too.

I think iwavestation (including the iap exp cards) is worth its full price, but still advice to wait for the regular Korg 50% sale (app and iap cards).

  • Hi, a few infos for you that may help your decision:

    • you can preview all of the sounds from the FULL VERSION and the ALL SOUNDS from within the free version, so that should give you an idea what you get and if those sounds are worth it for you.
    • you can send midi to 8 different instruments, but you would have to record them one by one if you want them recorded individually
    • I would not buy any of it at full price, I find even the sale prices a bit over priced (considering the fact that they run ads for their other apps on start up, and the reduced quality of some of their instruments)
