Alchemy update

edited November 2013 in General App Discussion

What's New in Version 2.2.5
• Inter-App Audio controls added
• Simpler main menu design
• Dropbox song import
• All Sounds Pack - buy all Sound Libraries at once for a reduced price
• Various other improvements

Exclusive new features in Pro upgrade
• MIDI Learn - control sliders and remix pad from an external MIDI keyboard
• Dropbox song export

Have to say I can't see the price of the libraries being different: unless they do mean at a lower price for the lot. The IAA panel is very nice, though

  • I can see the All Sounds Pro Pack at 379 swedish kronor.
    So im guessing 49 usd.

  • Using IAA in Cubasis is more buggy than in the previous version. And still no tempo synchronisation via IAA.

    • Sorry double post *
  • Inter App Audio + Cubasis is working OK here. What do you mean by "buggy" (aside from tempo, which is intermittent for me).

  • I have to start und close Alchemy maybe 5-8 times after I could use it in Cubasis. Same procedure after opening saved Cubasis songs which includes Alchemy. I also got more dropouts (I'm on iPad 2, but I used the same arrangement and the same sounds as with the previous Alchemy version).

BTW, what do you mean with "intermittent for me"?

  • Re "Intermittent for me", I mean tempo syncing Cubasis with other apps - it's not working 100% of the time for me, using Neve and other apps for testing. Usually I have to reset the transport and press play for BPM to be picked up.

I have noticed that performance is worse on an old iPod Touch 3, so maybe there is something in this update that's causing a problem with older devices. I will find out about that and the switching problem.

Woo hoo, finally an "all packs" option.

  • The problem isn't Cubasis, it's Alchemy. You have to start Alchemy outside of Cubasis and then connect via IAA in Cubasis.

  • Thanks Morris ... I've never been sure if this type of problem is Alchemy Mobile or IAA in general. IAA still seems a bit flakey on my iPad 3 / iOS 7.0.3.

Yesterday I had Neve playing "I AM NEVE" on never ending repeat, even though Neve was not running in the background (only Cubasis + Alchemy Mobile loaded).

    Freaky!

  • Actually, mine seems to work fine, post update. I like a lot of these new sounds, by the way

  • I'm not sure how IAA is supposed to work, I also have to open Alchemy prior to making the connection to BM2. Is the host app meant to open the connection?
At this moment in time I cannot see the advantages of using IAA over audiobus.

  • I'm sure the proper way is to open within the host app. I find IAA works much better when the host app is in the Audiobus output slot.

IAA is definitely half baked. As is Apples documentation on IAA. So devs kinda have to guess and try all the new IAA stuff out and see what works I guess. But done "properly" there shouldn't be any need to open an IAA node app before you open it from a host app. I'm really hoping Apple have done some major work on the IAA stuff for iOS 7.1 (like closing down IAA node apps that aren't visible in the multitask bar, when closing a project in the host app, amongst a lot of things).

    Neve....Nave? Lol

Btw, any impressions on the new sound bank?

  • I tested this using the free Nanologue synth that Steinberg gave away to promote the release of Cubasis 1.7.

A similar problem occurs - Nanologue does not always start immediately, or it fails to start at all so I have to quit Cubasis, open Nanologue, and then try again in Cubasis.

So at this point it's difficult to say where exactly the problem is. I'll keep testing and see if anything can be pinned down.

BPM sync definitely needs fixing though - I've logged a case for that.

  • The ability to download Alchemy project files (I'm guessing it is?) done by other people, never saw that feature before. Love how it's done in Korgs iPolySix, and it looks like it might be the way alchemy is headed perhaps? A bit more evolved song editor so you can remix community songs would be amazing to do with Alchemy.

  • Alchemy is one of my main synths, and like a lot of people have mentioned, I need to open it before I try and start it via IAA in Auria for it to work reliably. Sometimes it will load fine if done via IAA, but usually I get an error. Just easier to load it ahead of time and not worry about it.

Ditto with Nave, it's like that funky intro sequence movie takes too long and the app times out if you try and open via IAA sometimes.

  • Anyone know approx how much space Alchemy + All Sounds Pack would need?

  • Thanks guys! 1,9GB isnt that much. I was suspecting it could be atleast twice that amout.

Thanks synthhandson. I'm hoping it's a bit more melodic stuff in this one, many of the others covers more abstract scapes quite well already so..

Edit: Purchased the new bank. So a lot of the presets are some really cool scapes and effects, I personally probably wouldn't find that much use for those presets though (unless I'm making something for a movie or whatever I guess). But there are some really great string/choir and pads sounds in there. In some presets you can hear some great orchestral samples being used, and I'd prefered that the iOS version used more of the melodic stuff here. One other thing, the previews are a bit misleading with drums/percussions being used, there aren't any drum kits in this one. But at 5 bucks, I'm definitely happy with it all in all. :)

  • Anyone get the all sounds pack yet?

In the description it says "11 products" but I'm counting 13 sound libraries in total (from the menu).

It doesn't specify exactly which sound libraries are included in the purchase.

  • i transfered alchemy desktop version stock presets + 4 expansions and it takes 13gb on the ipad.

  • 14 sound packs including the factory set - total install with all packs 1.9GB. Alchemy mobile gets better with each update :-)

@ZenPunkHippy the bug where I have to launch it twice as an IAA instrument/generator is still there.

I can reproduce the bug every time on ipad air and iPhone 5.

Without fail the first time when trying to launch it gives the error message, the second time it launches fine.

Is the Camel team aware of it and/or able to fix it ?

  • I've contacted them about this. Waiting for response.

  • Do you mean using Auria? Or Cubasis? Or some other host?

  • @ZenPunkHippy could you please list which 11 sound packs out of the 13 available (excluding factory) are included in the "all sounds pack"?

  • It's actually 13 sound libraries that are included. We updated the in app text earlier today but the edit is still pending:

All Sounds Pack - 13 Products, 700 presets (was 11/600)

All Sounds Pro Pack - 14 Products, 775 presets (was 12/675)

  • @ZenPunkHippy I was referring to Cubasis. Alchemy will not launch from within the IAA host. I also had this issue with BM2. Alchemy has to be started outside IAA host first to launch. Thanks

  • @ZenPunkHippy Thanks for the clarification.

Would the all sounds pack include additional sound libraries that are added in the future?
