Recently picked up the Synapse Audio Reason rack collection w/ The Legend & absolutely love that synth. Didn't really need anymore Model D emulations, as I already had Monark and MiniV3 VST, plus Moog Model D on iPad but it easily tops them all imho -- one of the most analog sounding synths I've used. Plus it's a nice bonus that they throw in a free VST version of the synth if you e-mail them with proof of purchase of the reason rack version.

In this case i have to say that i own and/or tested all the Minimoog emulations and i still find the little app on my iPhone beats them all by a country mile. Model D is the holy grail for me. The Legend has some more parameters and good FX but the raw sound of Model D is just better and it reacts so much nicer to changes and live tweaking for me.
There is only 1 synth for me which i find better and more "analog" sounding and 1 which is on par.
The filter is just buttersmooth as it can get.

  • Nobody has mentioned FL Studio yet!...... Ok I will....... FL Studio...... :D Version 20 (from 12..... 13 got bypassed because of superstition I think?) is almost here (it's in Beta 6 at the mo, & full version for Mac too & not working from emulation) Once you pay for FL Studio all update & versions of it are free for life, whereas the others mentioned here you have to pay for (tho Ableton does only for a little price when the versions are a major one.... Live 9 to Live 10 I think?) If your into DJ style, or use samples a lot in a way of things, Ableton is the better choice & easier(simpler) to work with than the others. But Ableton does not use 32bit plugins now, or VST4 plugins. Only 64bit plugins. If you need to use 32bit Plugins, you need a program(cheaply priced) called JBridge to convert the 32 bit to 64bit plugins. Whereas the other DAWS bridge them automatically (which I was a tad disappointed with Ableton when they didn't implement this in version 10(at the moment, or never will)..... Who knows? ;)

  • Oh I forgot to mention, about FL Studio, is when they eventually get the iOS version flipping right, it should intergrate with the Desktop perfectly......... But did say once they get the iOS version right?...... :D

Fruity Loops is 20 this year so maybe that’s why they are going to V20

It was so buggy and full of spyware that apple had to remove it from app store

It'll be a cold day in Hades before this will happen!
And if they don't change interaction between desktop and mobile version completely it's just a bolted on option without real use...

Yep! I agree...… What they should of done is concentrated one format at a time, & got it right (near enough, with small bug fixes in which you do get). Maybe starting at the most what is sold the highest first for them, whether it was iOS, Android, or Windows mobile platform. Rather going for the whole lot in one go. I think it took out too much resources from Image Line programmers? It is quite a large challenge for them, & the upgrade is free for existing customers. I do take my hat off to them for doing that though. I think they will get there, but it will take a long time me thinks? :)

I have Presonus Studio One and I love it. You can get the professional version for around $150-200 second hand. Presonus will stream a live event on YouTube in 2 days, they could be announcing Studio One v4.

Though, it’s hard to beat Sonar’s new price. Best try that one first and if the workflow fits you, you’ll get a full featured DAW for free.

I’ll second that - S1 has this cool “single screen” concept so everything is visible at once. And the more deluxe versions include Melodyne lite which is awesome!

@tja - keep in mind there are, very roughly, two approaches in most DAWs; clip based, like Ableton and Bitwig, and more linear based like S1. Just something to keep in mind based on your approach to music.

One thing I do before making big purchases like this are to read through the user forums for the product in question. Find out what those folks like and don’t like....

  • I recently learned about Reaper’s ‘start minimal and build your menus as you go’ feature which is amazing for keeping a lean interface.

Tracktion (now Waveform) has had the single screen user experience for at least 12 years, and has come with Melodyne for several years as well. For < $100 USD. :p Also, can't beat the price of FREE for Tracktion 6.

So many DAW options now, you're best bet is read, research, watch videos and try demos of the ones you think you think you 1) like and 2) can afford.

Second this. Test drive as many as you can there’s no “right answer”. Everyone has different workflows

    Yep
There’s tons of options, enjoy a thorough search/trial cycle.
    Here’s some more:
MultiTrackStudio (which has a free trial, and you may already like it on iOS)
Here are free options, again something you may have tried on iOS: SunVox, Caustic
More trackers: Renoise, (and free, but 32g: only Aodix)
I realize these are outside regular work flows but my other DAWs have already been recommended (Bitwig, FL Studio)

Bitwig Studio 2 - 'DAW of the Year 2017' by Computer Music magazine

If you value connection with Hardware through Midi, Ableton Link, Modular via Control Voltage and the ability to modulate any parameter be it internal, external, VST, CV ...then yeah it's great for sound design.

  • Former Cakewalk Sonar Platinum is now a completely free DAW, courtesy Bandlab. The DAW now goes under its OG name; Cakewalk. I’ve dabbled with it very quickly, as of yet there are no internet requirements or anything like that. They’re continuing the development of the DAW as well. Will be interesting to see where all this lands after a year or two.

"Beware Greeks bearing Gift!"......... Its true, I live over this way....... And that saying is true right through virtually most things in life. Even a "Cold" is free, but you pay for it in one way or other. ..... :D
