Btw....I have several YT videos out explaining how I use DD. Here's one...

Hey that was actually really helpful! I think I’m gonna have to give this another spin...

How is this app compared to Patterning?

I find it absurdly complicated. It’s one of those apps where people are relieved when they can get something remotely musical out of it. If Patterning is “The Hobbit,” inventive and fun, Different Drummer is “The Silmarillion.”
    To me, anyway.

It is also possible that I'm simply not smart enough to get my head around this.

Heheh. Yeah it has that look to me from the UI. Designed by one person for one person.

  • Inspiringly creative and frustratingly unintuitive. It’s like a sonic puzzle. I love it.

  • DD is an app for exploration, really. I have no intention of ever trying to achieve something deliberate - it's about the fun of it all. The UI takes a sec for sure, but once you get the concept it'll open itself up.

If you're into apps like Musyc, Seaquence, etc that are exploratory in nature, then you'll dig this. It's really fun to mess with, and I think you'll get at least $5 out of it.

Well, at least two people; @funjunkie27 is doing his doctorate on Different Drummer! :)

  • I understand perfectly well what all the buttons controls and switches do, from their appearance. The problem is, the app itself doesn’t understand any of this, and always does something completely irrelevant instead, each time I interact with it.

  • I’ve found that using grid mode in every track leads to a more controlled, traditional sequencer type experience. Take grid mode off if you want something more experimental and unpredictable.

  • I've always loved this software. Here's an EP from March 2014 using internal sounds only.

  • Ok this thing was just too weird to pass up. The interface looks pretty crazy but is also intuitive on a certain level (reminds me of figure). Still not sure what I'm doing but got some interesting beats happening. Can tell I'm going to enjoy digging in to this. Some of these experimental apps are where iOS really shines.

Different Drummer was actually born out of one little corner of a much bigger program called HyperChord for the Amiga back in the early 90's. It's also a dead simple concept, waves controlling music instead of sounds. Waves are expressed in cycles per measure and measures per cycle. I intentionally made it as deep as you want to go with it and slowed down adding features when it became too unwieldy to explain. You will never master it any more than you will master music itself and you will never come close to hearing everything it can do because the exploratory space is so vast. You get several years of a musical programmer's work for 5 bucks (I get 3.50) so no apologies. Here's to the sonic pioneers of iOS and yes, there is a desktop plugin coming for the studio types who've used my software like Mark Mothersbaugh, Herbie Hancock, Simon Postford, Michael Shrieve, George Clinton and many more.

  • @Techne Thank you for your wonderful creation!! 🙌

  • Desktop plug-in - oh yeah!

  • only sequencing method that really clicks for me. think oscillab borrowed heavily from this.

I'm so intrigued that you think it's like Figure.

Well in a normal step sequencer (eg. DM1 or a piano roll) you simply place the drum on the steps where you want to hear it.
With Figure and DD you pick a drum and set the frequency that notes will be triggered eg. 16ths or 4ths and then tweak that.

Im referring to the more graphical screen that has the colorful circle and the note lengths. Im still unclear if this is the new Zenterface or if it was there all along. It's listed as an IAP which I didn't buy so maybe its something completely different, maybe its free now, maybe Im using some crippled version...the interface is a mystery! If it is still for sale I can't find where to buy it but maybe I don't need it anyways, who knows with this riddle of an app????! lol

  • @Techne oh cool didnt see you were here when I replied to ExA above. I am also a proud former Amiga user, loved my 500 which had a hand built sampler I used with OctaMED. Can you fill me in on what the ZEN IAPs are?

Thanks so much for dropping the price, $100 seems like a lot for an iOS app but in retrospect there are desktop VSTs in that range, its just out of my budget. Very happy to have it at the discount price.

  • Not really in the market but 95% discount? Sweet bejeezus

Theoretically you merely need download the latest update and the IAP is unlocked automatically. I never wanted IAP but since Apple did away with the concept of upgrades it was the only way to pay for further development. I honestly don’t get apponomics in terms of long term viability for developers. When I was making productivity software in my old company, Gluon, for publishing, we made thousands of dollars per sale, sometimes hundreds of thousands for site licenses and allowed us to employ dozens of folks. Ha, try putting two kids through college on non hit apps! These are for fun and proving experimental concepts for others to learn from and expand upon, such as Oscillab.

  • Thanks @Techne I was confused because the IAP is still listed in the app store.

  • All demos/tracks i heard so far have that very distinct sound that really screams "generative music!!!" to my ears.

Any more natural sounding examples, please?

    p.s.
That being said, as i said to @Techne , app's philosophy reminds me music from that band Fred Frith and Ikue Mori had with releases on John Zorn's record label :) "Death Ambient". Thanks for unique instrument we have to explore.

Oh, and i hope to imitate indonesian gamelan with it one day.
