Nice blog post by Red Sky Lullaby about his involvement in the project:

"The philosophy behind this was genuinely altruistic as there are lots of people that have access to an iPad but may not have the funds to buy music software."

New video from Wilsonic creator, Marcus Hobbs. He's demonstrating some scales he's curating for Synth One.

Best with headphones (or speakers with low frequencies)

Looks awesome and high-quality with cool fonts and pleasing colors! Obviously, you folks know how to develop a usable app. And it is not only free (and ad-free) but also - opensource!! You are changing the definition of mediocre freeware apps and setting a standard. I was already impressed by your FM Player long ago and have been waiting for Synth One ever since. Can't wait to download it and would gladly pay for it to support your ambitious, commendable and noble project. Kudos to you on coordinating such a big team and making it happen without any funding! This app has a promising future with a huge team - unlike any other free app project. Think of it like the opensource PHP project of the iOS music apps. Synth One has the advantage of a huge team size that NO other music app currently has (including Apple!!).

"This is the perfect synth for those who like to make their own sounds- Easily sculpt and customize your own sounds!"

If Synth One has all the features to design ANY sound, it would easily become the de facto standard and the "new default" synth for sound design which would fill a huge gap in iOS that has many synths that are not fully featured yet. Synth One will be a dream app!

What is the timeline for AU ?

Thank you. Just to manage some expectations: This won't be the "Best" iOS synth out there. But, it will be the best free one. πŸ˜…

There's no timeline yet. As this is for a more wide-spread audience than power users, most of the users of this synth probably won't know what AUv3 is... I'm optimistic it will happen, though. Hopefully, we can do it in a way that allows many other developers to make their apps AUv3 as well...

  • Wow. What a story!!!!! This is so great. I can’t believe how big this project is for free. You guys are incredible.

  • Sampler next? :)

  • Kudos to all involved - very impressive on so many levels!

  • Finally got a chance to watch this, looks very interesting. Will definitely be checking this out.

  • The Wilsonic layout of scales as midi output for this synth would be the dogs bollocks. As well as .tun file import (or .scl with kbm) to get along nice with other apps and plug-ins which supports that. Maybe one day :)
I often mentioned that i love microtuning and there is still a big gap in iOS. So this is very welcome for sure.
When i see the GUI i just see a great way in the future to create own microtunings if we could just set a number of values (in a best case from 1-128 for each midi key) and then grab the colored dots to set them up.
However, this project looks really nice and iΒ΄m sure it will evolve. ThatΒ΄s def. another reason i grab an iPad again since i doubt there will be an iPhone version?

  • Nice...this looks like fun challenge

    Thanks, everyone!

We're working hard to get it out to you as soon as possible!

BTW, the app is very lightweight. Free & the total app size is under < 25mb.

And, importing .tun (or .scl) files is on the roadmap!

You said that you switched from Swift to C++ because of iOS 11?

Great question, we mainly switched the sound engine to C++ so that it would be easier to make the synth AUv3. And, C++ is MUCH better for features like the arp and sequencer timing.

I miss my days of coding C++, if you coded well you could really get performance benefits. If you coded badly you really knew it ...

Can’t remember the last time I got that low level, all frameworks and bloatware these days. The CPU power these days masks sloppy coding.

But I digress ... looking forward to the launch.
