Yeah, a rant. So what? Everything's frustrating these days for us old folks. I'm relatively new to Apple, so my expectations were formed by Microsoft. Nuf said.

Rick Beato's channel is first class. Loads of real information for anyone wanting to learn or possibly expand their knowledge of music. I imagine he'd love to respond to the wisdom here, but probably too busy working on something useful.

I hope he stays away from here, he is rude and egotistical. Some of the comments he made to people were pretty bad in the past and he wasn’t joking.

I don't follow everything he does or says. Regarding your accusations, I'll have to withhold judgment. I'd be interested to read his views on music here, but I don't expect that's going to happen.

That’s the beauty of the internet, you can listen to him on his YouTube channel about music. He is a great musician.

  • Wow, this blew up.

  • For me, as a Pro and Mac Mini user.... it’s beyond bad.
Because of my mobile car studio I went all the way with Mac minis...
and the interfaces keeps changing, making expensive gear obsolete, like my pro tools mixer.

iOS is heaven compared to desktop, especially in price

imho he's correct in most points, but I don't get the tone of complaint.
I don't mind Apple's plans, but use what fits my needs, like the G3 in the beginning of the video which hosts my Pro Tools TDM, scored dead cheap for it's 'abandoned' status o:)

  • The constant changing and dwindling number of ports should concern musicians, as well as the feverish pace of changing OS's creating problems with the programs you work with, and audio interfaces (which can be nearly as expensive as the computer). If you are a creative person, more than a person that appreciates technology for its own sake, the computing experience is secondary to remaining productive.

  • I have been using Apple products professionally for 25 years. Nothing they have done has ever interfered with me completing my work. I have not spent an unreasonable amount of money on hardware during that time. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has had this experience. And I do not “like crap”. :D

  • He’s got incredible videos on his channel esp if you play guitar . Has tons of knowledge . Great thing he’s got there

I must admit that Mr Rick does typify that category of person who seems to have endless amounts of disposable cash, spent unwisely. :)

That said, he is not wrong about Apple. Gimmicks like the touchbar, the dodgy keyboard, and reducing connectivity of products simply is not innovation. Apple has the power to transform the technological world, to advance the planet. Yet priority is given to selling ever more overpriced phones. :'(

As Huawei proves with their Matebook Pro X, is is possible to make and sell a very high quality laptop, for up to £500 less than the nearest Apple equivalent. So why don’t they give customers a better deal? Because there are still plenty of dopes who will pay the extra for less, and think they gain status.

  • It’s amusing how many people complain so much about Apple, yet still use Apple. You’d think after these at least several years of no innovation and life-sapping dongles, that these people would be off using something better. But, nope. Still here. ;)

That is a really excellent point, I love the way you wrote that.

It seems like most things these days in technology focus on social media (of which I do none), not productivity. Not the case on this forum so much, but it seems to be the case for most other things.

Despite the many frustrations apple introduces, the fact that software and hardware are so integrated is what made me move to mac and ios from anything else. I've recently been using android tablets to control my behringer x32 rack and am reminded of what an unified mess android can be. However, the mix station pro app for x32 is android only and is so much better than the official android app.

However, my favorite thing on ios is the fact that if i get a song idea I can very quickly pull out my phone or iPad and make a quick, decent sounding demo on garageband, which can then open on other devices. More than one complete song that was later recorded with a full band and production started this way.

  • I didn't format the quoted part correctly but hopefully my post makes some sense.

Oh, absolutely. While I and fellow band members have all had a history of dabbling with music in one way or another, IOS was and remains a revolution in what can be done and how that is achieved.

Apple have, and continue, to do some things better than any other tech company. I’d just like them to do so much more, genuinely innovate again, and stop treating those not enamoured by (anti) social media like second class citizens. Being worth 1.4 trillion dollars means the company effectively has no limits, other than those being imposed by a management obsessed with the iPhone.

Was a time when I was so hyped to try and own a mac or macbook for production. Couldn't afford it at the time. By the time I could afford it it didn't even cross my mind. Way more power, upgradeability and general connectivity available in PC for same price and zero mac software benefits for anyone not previously heavily invested in any mac only products.

I use an iPhone and iPad but reluctantly and purely down to 3rd party software..

I'm a PC user, but I do glance over the fence at Logic Pro...

  • It’s just a fact that we musicians are a small niche market, so we’re never going to be a priority for Apple. The millions of customers they have are not lesser human beings. They enjoy their social media, and Apple is in the business of providing for them. Apple’s idea of innovation may actually be innovative for many users, and what’s a hassle today, may end up being a benefit in the future when things get sorted. Despite it all not being in our favor, here we are making music on these little devices in ways we barely dreamed of years ago.

of course - for there isn't anything 'better', at least not for standard desktop use. ;)
Even Apple's most messed up OSX releases are way easier 'sorted out' compared to Win-10, which is a never ending chain of bug fixes.
IOS is the only system around that almost completely get's you into the illusion there isn't a computer inside the tablet - it's just tapping an icon and using a function.
Which you can switch off any time and continue whenever you like, both with immediate reaction.

Yes, I have a Win-10 laptop that I only use for non-music stuff, and it’s kind of a buggy mess. Before I got a Mac, Windows drove me crazy. Maybe for someone who really knows what they’re doing, they can set up a PC to work reliably, but for me I’ve been very comfortable with my Mac. I use Logic, my favorite DAW, which of course requires a Mac. Then there’s Final Cut Pro. I’m just a hobbyist, but FCP seems to run really well on the hardware it was designed for. So bottom line, I have many complaints about Apple, but they’re relatively trivial in the big picture.

Who is being forced to upgrade from whatever port they like? You can buy old ass machines with whatever ports you like. You don’t have to upgrade your machine or your software.

When you buy an old ass machine, unless you've backed up your app file properly previously, you'll have to download the latest versions of your apps from the store. And your new old device with all the ports on it will have been wiped for sale, and will have the latest iOS on it.

    And it'll run like shit.

Not even Microsoft 'knows it' - their stuff is almost entirely based on automated code generators founded on a less than bulletproof object model.
I occasionally have to use their Visual Studio live protocol/debugger - output is plain absurd, considering the simplicity of tasks coded.

Wrong. There are plenty of places where you can buy legacy Macs with legacy OS installed. Original Mac store in Manhattan and several places online.

We don't all live in Manhattan.
