Do you know long press on undo button allows for redo?
Yes, it has a kind of toyish consumer grade feel, but is pretty deep in fact. It’s even better now with proper AU rendering.
GarageBand is pretty great IMO, it's a terrific songwriting environment: excellent built-in instruments, amazing touch-based playing surfaces, supports MPE, you can load external synths as AU, non-destructive quantize, decent piano roll. It falls short in the mixing department, but that's what Auria is for
Only thing really lacking is the ability to export stems.
Is there a way to edit sections so that you can record a full song (ie. with the sections off), THEN split it up into different sections? Recording a section at a time when you might not have the song structure sorted in your head isn't always particularly practical.
It’s possible.
You’ll have to select all parts, and by long press on parts click on split option, using transport locator position. This will split vertically all parts, repeat this as often as needed for sections preparation.
Then, create some sections by tap on + button, and then just select and copy needed parts from main initial section to new sections you want.
You can create sections before split/copy/paste process, of course.
You can make song copy before process to keep the whole section version. Then delete it from multiple sections song version. That way you’ll be able to use all sections playing feature.
It’s also useful to create temporarily a section to reproduce AB locators loop feature like in other DAWS, for recording purposes.
It’s even possible to copy section/parts to loop mode and vice versa, nice for fast AB locators recording thing too.
Whole process is faster than it seems.
It’s fantastic now. And if you use Logic on the Mac it’s even better.
Just checking here, there isn’t a way to freeze tracks on Garageband is there? Besides exporting a project on a track by track basis and importing the resulting sound files?
Make a long press on track icon and choses fusion
Then choose the track you want and click fusion
It will make a new frozen audio track. To go back to midi track use undo. Also it will make an archive song copy, you can then copy pre-frozen midi track from it into the actual song. Not as fluid as real freeze function, but works well.
Yes you can, as Janosax shows above: long press and choose "merge". It will duplicate the project so you can always go back to the original MIDI (in the duplicate).
Thanks for clarification, « merge » is « fusionner » in french like you can see on screenshots above. Sorry for the mistake
Janosax, thank you! I would never have guessed how to do this. Never found it googling either. It’s called Merge in the English version and I never even tried the option out, thought it was for combining midi tracks. Cheers again!
You’re welcome!! Also, note that merging adds some normalization in the process, so track level can be louder and need to be adjusted.
Sorry, I was a bit late with that reply. Thanks richard for the help.
It’s matured so much since it first came out, and now with Sunrizer having AUv3, dang... I mean there’s still some stuff I’d like to see (being able to map midi CC to knobs etc) but for free and for what you DO get under the hood it’s pretty incredible.
Also, not nearly as worried about a new iOS breaking it. Not worried at all really...
Ravenscroft 275 AU, Neo Soul Keys AU, GB Latin percussion drummer, GB P-Bass, Embertone Jubal Flute...wow, so jazzy man
AU rendering fix really opens new workflows on iPhone, but also for iPad GB users.
For example, each one of those track has a slightly different drum audio loop and an individual Replicant 2 tweaked differently:
Then merge all 4 tracks in one audio track:
Use split tool to cut new audio part in 4 new parts:
You can now use those new parts in your arrangement, or even copy them in loop mode, which doesn’t have merge feature:
Very nice to create new sound materials/variations. This will add movement without AU automation, and helps with CPU ressources management. Always possible to use merging song copy for going back.
@Janosax nice idea!
I’ve made a mini video tutorial showing this and how to use archive song copy:

@janosax thanks for all the tips and assistance here it is greatly appreciated!
