Thanks for this Doug, I needed a run through to help me decide if it would be useful to me....which it would, if I had an iOS REX file maker :)

With the loops not triggering properly, did you still have the arp enabled ?
And with the keyboard when it was playing the same loop regardless of which you had selected, was that because of the Note Dest Knob ?

  • @AndyPlankton It could be that Andy, yeah, I'll check, It definitely was working before I started the demo

  • Thanks Doug!

Maybe we can get @alexbuga on board for an additional feature for his amazing cutting app to save cutted wavs into Rex, if this is a thing and possible. I don’t think we will get anything from KORG or propellerheads for that...

  • What puzzles me is that Korg has support for 'Audio Copy.app' and it provides plenty of acidiced *.wav loops in it's content store but there's no way to use those files with the new rex-player even though they are already tempo-mapped and pre-sliced.(That meta-data baked in the *.wav files is not even used when using the pasted *.wav files in Abu Dhabi!!)

So theres like not 'clear logic' in Korgs behaviour here...

And where is the Files.app support honestly? iOS12 will drop in a few months and the Files.app was introduced over a year ago in iOS11...

I would imagine you have to license REX from propellerheads in order to create them, if that's even possible.....that'll be why there aren't a whole bunch of free rex file makers on the PC

    That's most likely the case.

But that's yet another 'Reason' for Korg to add a 'Gadget' for sampling/sample-editing, managing files, creating rex-files, sharing presets etc. etc. :)

I don't know how long it will take (if ever?) for us to get a decent sampler (not just a sample player) inside Gadget...

  • @thesoundtestroom Thanks Sir Doug. Def helped me realize how much fun I'm going to have with the automation AND reminded me not to go TOO mad just because I can. No question your problem at the end was having the ARP enabled :)

  • This is great Doug and thanks as always. Though, I'm pretty sure I'll be buying it now.

Making one's own REX files? Has anyone here done so? Brave new world for me.

  • Thanks Stephan523. I found a tutorial and it looks super easy.

Can you share the link...? Thanks

  • I had absolutely no interest in this Gadget until I saw Doug’s vid, which made it look like loads of fun. If it wasn’t for the bad performance on my pad with Gadget I would have bought this.

Went off and played with Dr Rex in Reason for half an hour instead...

  • Here you go RajahP -

  • I may be in the minority here, but am I the only one who's not exactly excited for this latest gadget? I looked forward to Doug's video, and the presentation itself was top quality like always, but really? Another f*ing loop slicer, and one in a format no iPad app can export to? And once again no Files support either? I already have Abu Dhabi for my needs, thanks. I also really can't be arsed to search Google for rex files when my sample library is already 50+ gb purchased and collected in a span of over 15 years.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a major Gadgethead through and through. Up until Stockholm, I've enthusiastically collected EVERYTHING that can function in Gadget and all of those IAPs too (hundreds and hundreds of dollars). When Vancouver and Lisbon were released, instabuy. When DeeMax was released, instabuy (even if it's not as useful as I'd hoped). When Scarbee and KaPro libraries were released in Module, instabuy. I was on the fence about Stockholm until I hopped off and purchased Affinity Designer instead. Far more useful for me. Now if Korg and Propellerhead would stop sitting on their thumbs and find a way to port Thor over to Gadget....

It's a conundrum. If Korg could find a way to bounce individual scenes to Rex files like reason does, or export entire projects as Rex instead of Ableton projects it would be a major miestone. For the time being it's a faint hope.

I'd much rather see 'Europa' as a Stand-Alone, AUv3 & Gadget. Haven't used Thor in ages...

Think that’s the way to do it in Recycle ( $200 last time I looked)..

Seems like Reason can do it now ... hope the Reason 10 Lite I recently picked up can do it also.. (when I get home)...

This would be really huge!!! Please not as a gadget and in its own universe!
Europa and Thor as AUv3 is more than I could ask for. I love Thor, but as not being AU and not being good in virtual midi... hmm

Oh and @thesoundtestroom Doug? Please tell us this was not the „terrible NDA“ we were talking about ;)

  • @david_2017 This is definitely not the NDA Iwas talking about😎

  • @thesoundtestroom said:

Puh! Thanks sir! I was actually pretty sure, since you can decide between a „fucking huge“ upcoming thing and KORG cooking in his own universe again :) thanks

  • I really love the new gadget. Brings back memories of playing around with the Dr. Octo rex Player ages ago!

I still have ReCycle ( bought it around 2001 when the 2.0 version came out ). I've created and collected tons of Rex files over the years. Lots of material to play around with!

Somehow this gagdet is one for the old school crew. Thanks for that, Korg!

And thanks for the video, Doug!

Simple answer: You can't because Propellerheads have never offered that.
Propellerheads have only offered a precompiled shared library on major OS platforms for REX playback all the years, but no way to create REX files.
While the slice information is no secret (with a bit of reverse engineering), the actual audio compression is.
And until today, such a precompiled library required to build your own app is still not available on iOS.
Who knows, with the release of Stockholm on iOS, the code exists and it's just a decision of ph managers away.

Yes... Reason 10 Lite does REX files... Nice..

Now I have hope, PHEW! Well, then next question....without giving it away, is the NDA about something far huger than a synth, or roughly the same?

If ANY app was able to slice wav files and export them as rex files, I might consider purchasing Stockholm. Abu Dhabi already does pretty much what I need without that rigmarole.

Europa too then. Any of those would've been better than a rex player where you can't even adjust the timing of the slices.

    I think that's a no-go since it's a proprietary format :(

Considering Gadget supports AudioCopy.app it would have made sense to include a 'Acidieced Wav > REX' converter built-in so we could use them pre-sliced and tempo-mapped loops from the AudioCopy content store but nah, Korg chose to go for the mega super locked rex-format instead...

Yeah, I mean even Abu Dhabi ignores the 'acid meta data' from the AudioPasted *.wav samples...
So _why_ does Korg stick with AudioCopy.app when it doesn't even fully utilise the features it has?

But on the positive side there's quite a load oldish rex-files included to play with.

Nice addition, but if this is any real indication as to where Gadget is heading I'm worried...

Does this make sense in a way? Gadget is a closed system, for the most part. Reason is a closed system, for the most part (or at least can be used that way and for all intents and purposes was completely closed until vst support was added only recently).

I dunno ... all this talk about AU (!!) support and yelping for features that aren't there but are in other "daws" seems sort of like going to buy a men's suit and griping that the other tailor's suits have pockets on both sides. You buy a suit from a particular tailor because you like the way they make suits, right?

note I don't mean the above to sound like complaining about complaining. I really don't get it and am always willing to listen. And granted, I'm on a bit of a Gadget rip right now.

In the Desktop world, Gadget being able to play REX files to enable tighter integration with Reason makes some sort of sense, to some anyway. To make REX files you need either Reason or ReCycle on the desktop/laptop.
If you DO have both reason and gadget then aren't you most likely to host the gadgets in Reason like @MonzoPro suggested ?

Here in iOS land where it is far less useful because you have to use a desktop/laptop to make rex files, they charge for it !
Why charge for it on the platform it is least useful, when it is free on the other ? Surely you would do it the other way round, give it free where it is least useful to encourage its use, or at least either be free or charged for on both platforms.

Yes I agree on this. Horses for courses and all that.
