    I haven't admitted I have a problem.

    So I don't.

However, music making with iOS helped me stay clean at times over the years. Going on 10 years clean.

Wow. Seriously impressive and inspiring. Might bring it up in class (without mentioning your name, unless you’re ok with that).
People may complain on/about these forums but your honesty makes it all worth it.

My comments are addressed to those who are seriously concerned about spending too much money on apps they can’t use and don’t need.

Addiction is frequently a coping mechanism to address unresolved issues in our lives. Even an unhealthy coping mechanism can bring us immediate short term relief yet long term grief as it undermines other aspects of our life. More and more of our life can begin to focus on our addiction to the exclusion of everything else.

Anything can become an addiction, so if buying apps is yours, I recommend seeking help rather than trying to do it all on your own. The nature of addiction is to undermine your ability to control your life and the stronger your addiction becomes, the more challenging it will be to break free of its grasp.

Thank you for this, @InfoCheck !

Still not sure if my app-purchasing patterns qualify as appaholism. There are warning signs. As per that insightful and useful post by @InfoCheck, buying apps or at least visiting these forums can occasionally be a coping mechanism. Not necessarily from deeply personal issues. But as an escape from a lot of negativity in our world. Which also pushes me to avoid some other forums as much as possible.
Where music has the most impact, for me, is in direct contact with others. Jamming, especially, which is like condensed friendship. But even just demoing some simple feature to somebody. Or having a conversation about guitar pedals. Or going to a friend’s show. Or listening to a track together.

As for Gadget, the macOS version was a fairly decent investment, for me, and it made it less likely for me to purchase some of those IAPs. Sure, it can be especially neat to have the same exact setup on iOS and macOS, to transfer projects and such. But Module takes way too much storage, iMono/Poly doesn’t motivate me too much, and there’s enough in my Gadget lineup to have quite a bit of fun.
Having said this, did buy Stockholm. Haven’t played that extensively with Rex files but got many of those through sample bundles. Could work really well on iPad. Also have Transfuser (part of the AIR Instrument Expansion Pack).

@RUST( i )K I hear you brother; I go back & forth with the whole "breaking anonymity" thing but f*** it; I come here pretty much daily and love this community. Music saved my life from my descent into addiction (to stuff a lot heavier than just apps) for about as long as you Rust. The late 2000's were tough and I'm grateful every day that I have today. Music was a huge salvation, I became just as excited (if not more) for music again in all its forms than when I first started as a preteen.

I know some in recovery can get quite militant about any flippant talk of addiction or applying humor to it but I don't see this thread or our discussions about "appoholism" to be facetious or disrespectful. The bottom line to all of it is moderation. Some of us have a huge problem with moderation in every facet of our lives, including music apps, gear, software, etc.

The manifestation of that all too human characteristic in the iOS music realm is thankfully a hell of a lot less dangerous & destructive as the other joneses one could be carrying around.

  • There’s not any music apps left to buy for me... that’s my big problem.

    Is that appoholic?

Depends. Did you start just buying random cooking and fitness apps after you ran out of music apps?lmao

If not, I’d say you’ve found your cure and are recovering my man. Congrats!!

Oh Lordy! Not that bad. But I’ve experienced cold turkey like symptoms like sweating, tremors & sore foreskin.

July is halfway over and this month so far It's been RX950, rbSAM, Quanta, Pro-Q 2, SpaceCraft and 'Stockholm'.
Last June I got DerVoco, StepPolyArpUnit, SynthMaster One, apeMatrix and DAW LP.
May was 'slow' Fly Tape, Perforator, Harmonizer & Kronecker.
April was slow, Adverb2, DAW Casette, Objec & Samplist.

Well, it ain't cheap being an app-o-holic but thankfully I don't suffer from any other substance abuses :)
Yes, I do have too m any apps for my own good and will do a 'cleanup'(ie. make a proper list of apps I'm likely to use) once iOS12 drops...

  • Yes we are all here to support you in your addiction :)
