For me, iOS is useful for sparking ideas, but once I have it, I need the most efficient means of finishing. Completing projects is hard enough, I need as few impediments as possible when it comes to the production and engineering work. This is where MacOS comes in. The larger workspace alone justifies going outside the tablet ecosystem.

In terms of going outside Gadget as a closed system, a non-synthetic instrument is often needed to keep things sparky.

In this case, a guitar provided that missing element.

    The rest is all Gadget.

Does Gadget export stems and MIDI files?

    Yes to both.

I just wanted to say thanks to you all for your input and for the discussion and the songs. You all helped me out greatly. I took the plunge and bought Gadget for Mac, as well as the Stockholm for ipad. I'm very stoked.

I'll now try to refrain from commenting on every Korg thread here. hehe

What are your first impressions of the Mac version - happy with it?

Off to a mates in a bit to eye up his version and see if I’m tempted.

Blimey that’s very good, wouldn’t have clocked it as being done on Gadget - lovely guitar playing too.

  • Fab Lady_App ! Is that all you? Guitar as well? Tasteful playing and nice recording.

Thx! Yup, all Gadget. In fact, I think it’s all mostly just one gadget, Darwin. A little Bilbao too.

    Thanks so much, @kinkujin!
Yes, all just me, Gadget, and my geetar.

I find it can get a little monotonous with all synth sounds, so I try to throw in some other instruments, guitar, vocals, phrase samples, saxophone, etc, to keep it interesting.

    Absolutely agree.

With the project I’m finishing at the moment, I realised that trying to get it from Gadget on my iPad to the same iPad was actually far more difficult than getting it from Gadget on my Mac to the same Mac, so I hopped over to LPX to finish it, and I’m very glad I didn’t persist trying to do it all on iOS. LPX on my Mac became a gain-staging mixing and mastering appliance.

Track sounds great. So did you record the guitar and mix everything in Gadget on Mac?

Thanks. I believe I started it on Gadget on the iPad, and then finished it and overdubbed the guitar in Digital Performer on the Mac.

That’s a pretty typical workflow for me.

  • Very nice track. Excellent guitar playing.

So many thanks to all you guys who checked out my examples, and for the great comments!

And just because I read some not-so-nice comments about Gadget in other threads (most of them absolutely justified), I feel the urge to defend it by giving one extra example of what can be done with it (I promise, I won‘t do this ever again). Surely not everyone‘s cup of tea, but at least 100% Gadget:

And in addition to some other comments: the „get it finished“ aspect in Gadget is what makes it valuable for me. No endless fiddling or trying this effect, equalizing the bass again, maybe add some extra instruments here or there... no, it makes me finish the track with what‘s on board and be satisfied with the result - more or less.

  • Gadget experiences. I'm sure I'm a little late to the party, but I love Gadget. Ever since the introduction of Vancouver and Recife as well as the KaPRO Module expansions, I have everything I need to produce sound. Two examples I posted to Facebook...

    Soon there'll be more.

Now if Gadget would allow unlimited effects slots, I could do all of my mixing work in the app itself instead of f***ing around with stem exporting all the time. Meantime, I export my stems to Audioshare, do my mixdown in AUM, and master in Auria with the FF plugins (although that last step will probably be replaced with EQing the master in AUM and exporting to Grand Finale for the limiter once I get Pro-Q2 as an AU).

    Go Go Gadget Power............BOOM!
excellent example of what Gadget can do in the right hands Bravo

  • jw - Keep posting. Cool!

  • Leon Kowalski - thanks for posting that. Nice work!

  • This track was just pure iOS Gadget alone.... Then I transferred instrumental track of Gadget to Ableton, so I could apply the vocals acapella to the instrumental of the Gadget track..... I do quite a lot in Gadget actually..... There goes my "Secret Sauce"...… :D
