I asked Korg about AUv3, the Korg app team respond...

  • I'm almost positive that Korg sees gadget on IOs as a tool to brainstorm easily, they do not see it as the actual workhorse. They want you to fuck around on Ipad then export stems to Ableton. It seems pretty obvious that ultimately they do not want to make a DAW that competes against Ableton and are working towards integration in that area. They just have a music sketch pad for people who don't own Ableton or want to work on Ipad and then move to desktop.

Gadget is just like GarageBand. Tease you enough you get the desktops to finish and complete projects. A stepping stone to the big machines. Eventually in two or three years we may see the future on iPads.

Gadget's basically a mobile sketchpad for desktop producers, or a fairly simple piano roll music studio for anyone who wants to use it that way. I think many iOS music-makers don't need audio recording or anything much more complex. It's not the right tool for some people, and maybe because they didn't know any better when they bought it, are bitter over their decision. Every thread about Korg or Gadget is too tempting not to do some griping about it not being something it's not.

  • So i did a little ditty on Gadget for the first time in years today...and you're tellin me Gadget doesn't auto-save?

I had a quick go with a mates Reason/Gadget setup on his Mac over the weekend. Dropped a few VST’s into Reason and they worked blooming lovely. Kind on the old CPU too. I’d be really tempted by a Windows version.

But AU’s for the iOS versions would be even better.

I probably should have made it clear at the beginning the AU feature request wasn't about Gadget. :)

I agree there are lots of alternatives coming out but if/when Korg do do AU they will be very good because their UX is always very well done, maybe why they have avoided so far as they are still finding how to do it successfully.

Would love to see iMonpoly/Wavestation/Oddyssei/iMS20 as AUv3

I don't know. I guess it is personal but I'm not massively enamored in Korg UX. Yes, I do like how immediate Gadget's sequencer is but some individual gadgets aren't exactly work of genius. Helsinki, Kingston, Brussels are looks over substance, lexicon has close to impossible to use controls and don't get me started on Zurich. It feels like the only reason they've released it was to shut up all of us asking for an audio gadget.

Now they keep releasing more or less complex duplicates of the same thing rather than giving us more touch screen friendly Samplr style playable stuff.

Sorry for the ranty tone, I don't even use Gadget these days but you must have touched some sore spot ;)

Yeah I agree on Gadget, that's why I stopped using it, there are some bad choices in there. But the Standalone synths are mostly nicely done compared to most iOS synths in usability. But even if you don't like the UI design they definitely know how to make something playable.

If they only made one AUv3 I'd settle for iMonopoly i think :)

I reckon at some point we’ll see AU versions of all gadget synths that are already stand-alone like I wavestation and iodyssei. It would be good to see ikaossilator and ielectribe AUs too! Exciting times for sure.

@supadom - we don’t need iElectribe any longer, we are more than fine with Groove Rider GR16...

You did not just say that! Good thing we’re not inna bar right now.

Just checked the AppStore demo. I think I know why I haven’t noticed it. I’m more of a seekbeats/elastic drums kind of guy. Knob automation!

Not getting any drum boxes until Drambo comes out.

Hey, if you don’t like Groove Rider GR16 immediately, you must be out of your mind! ;-)
Groove Rider may be top five best app ever for the whole iOS...

Just look at the official thread about Groove Rider - more than 3000 comments, almost 80000 views here on Audiobus forum, and, the app has evolved very fast, ten updates from the dev in a very short time!

The biggest problem just now for many of us - how the hell do I get the times to play around with all fuckin’ unbelievable amazing music apps??
