SunVox update to v1.9.4 - check it out!!

Wow. This developer has been busy. I am seriously going to put some time into this app. Here’s the changelog that has just dropped.

v1.9.4 (29 jul 2018):

  • iOS: user files are now available through the Files app;
  • iOS: partial USB/Bluetooth keyboard support (no key release, no Home/End, no F1/F2/...);
  • iOS: improved iPhone X display support;
  • sound engine optimization;
  • indicating the modules whose controllers are tied to the MIDI;
  • additional slider for scrolling the controllers when there is not enough space on the screen;
  • spectrogram has been added to the to the spectrum analyzer;
  • detailed settings of the spectrum analyzer are now available through the main menu -> Preferences -> Modules; also you can find it in sunvox_config.ini;
  • Amplifier: new controller "Gain" for high amplification (x100, x1000 and higher);
  • Analog Generator: new option "True zero attack/release" - turn it on when you need a very fast (instantaneous) zero attack or/and release;
  • Analog Generator: new waveforms: "noise with spline interpolation (sampler)", "white noise", "pink noise", "red noise", "blue noise", "violet noise", "grey noise";
  • Compressor: new mode "peak zero latency" for compression/limiting without delay; modes "peak" and "RMS" operate with a delay of 1 ms;
  • Distortion: new types: "foldback2", "foldback3", "overflow";
  • GPIO: max number of pins is increased to 256;
  • LFO: new waveform "random interpolated" (same as random (5), but with a smoother transition between the signal levels);
  • DrumSynth: three additional panning controllers for the bass, hihat and snare;
  • Kicker and DrumSynth: panning controller can now be set locally (for each note separately);
  • Kicker: "Boost" (old name - "Vol.addition") controller works again after it was accidentally broken in SunVox 1.6 :) (base SunVox version in the project properties must be 1.9.4 or higher);
  • MultiCtl: new controllers "Response" and "Sample rate" to smoothly change the output value; response=1000 - immediate change; response<1000 - smooth change; optimal sample rate = 150Hz, please avoid higher values without the urgent need;
  • Timeline: new function "set restart position" - use it to change the position which the project should restart from after the project end;
  • pattern effect 03 (slide to note): default speed value (XXYY) is 256 (100 in hex);
  • new pattern effect 24: take a note from line XXYY on the same track; if the note to the left of the effect is specified, it will be used as the transposition value (relative to C5: c5 - one semitone higher, C4 - one octave lower, etc.); if the module number is missing, then the module number from line XXYY will be used;
  • new pattern effect 25: take a random note from the range of lines XX..YY (inclusive) on the same track;
  • new pattern effect 26: take a note from track XXYY on the same line;
  • new pattern effect 27: take a random note from the range of tracks XX..YY (inclusive) on the same line;
  • new pattern effect 28: take a note from line XXYY on track 0;
  • new pattern effect 29: take a random note from the range of lines XX..YY (inclusive) on track 0; see example "pat effect 29 random note from trk0";
  • module remapping: "pattern" button has been added;
  • dialog window shortcuts: Y or ENTER = first button on the left; N = second button; ESC = cancel; 1...9 = buttons from left to right;
  • if you enter the file name "exporttest" when exporting to WAV, the SunVox engine speed test will be performed (without saving to disk);
  • new keyboard shortcut: CTRL + SHIFT + N - new project;
  • new keyboard shortcut: SHIFT + F10 - play from the pattern cursor;
  • new instruments: keyboard/NR SuperSaw (lo-fi), analog11, analog12, pads/analog_distorted2, wind/NR Sax;
  • new instruments and effects from other users (see the instruments and effects folders);
  • new simple examples: idm, pat effect 29 random note from trk0;
  • sunvox_config.ini: denorm 0/1 - disable/enable denormal numbers; DON'T use this if you don't know what it is :)
  • various small changes and improvements;
  • bug fixes: unpredictable clicks in Vibrato and Vocal Filter, etc.

    The first thing I'm going to do is denormal my numbers.

    That's how I'm rolling these days.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Nice, hope he’ll add AB3 statesaving soon.

  • SunVox updates are always so impressive. Amazing.

    Yes, finally I will try to get into this, already played some of the demos which are massive, IMHO!

    @gusgranite How could you extract the text? The App Store does not allow this and when I tried by webbrowser, it always wanted to open the App Store

    Probably possible on desktop.

  • Happy happy joy joy :)

  • This app scares me. I bought it one day, and never really touched it. Then I get the update and strat looking at the demo songs included that I never paid any attention to and wow. Amazing stuff coming out of this. I just need like 2 days of focus to dig in.

  • Alexander Zolotov is freaking genius. The SunVox updates are usually on a yearly cycle, and when I saw this one dropped after barely half that time I was thinking it must be a fairly minor update. I have been properly chastised. Files app support is HUGE (for me anyway) and caught me totally by surprise, since he is maintaining a codebase that has to compile for multiple platforms. I mean, iOS and Android would be hard enough, but he also releases SunVox for Windows and Linux (both x86* and ARM) and macOS and even Windows CE devices (does anybody even have a Pocket PC anymore??). The fact that iOS is getting special love here with 2 big iOS-only features blows me away!

  • @tja I grabbed the text from here. http://www.warmplace.ru/soft/sunvox/changelog.txt
    Normally I just do a screengrab from the AppStore but there were too many changes in this case to fit on the screen!

    I used to use this aeons ago on a Samsung Galaxy 2. The touch response was cumbersome then but maybe on iOS in its current iteration it’s different. What are its sampling capabilities like?

    I’m no expert but it looks like you can do a lot with sampling FX

    Can it sample IAA? Sampling the built in modules looks fun :)

    Have asked. I would like to know this as well!

  • If I recall correctly SunVox can be put in the output-slot of AudioBus making it possible to sample everything that is piped thru AudioBus?

    You can sample anything inside SunVox and also sample via IAA and Audiobus

    SunVox appears as a effect in IAA lists of FX in your DAW or host and as an AB effect in AB. (It doesn’t list as an Output in AB, you find it in the Effect boxes list)

    You need an Input module in SunVox to record external audio from your host. Inside SunVox connect the Input module to a Sampler module and press record and you're in business.

    (Once you’ve recorded your bit, you will need to close the app hosting SunVox to hear Sunvox again...)

    The sample editing possible is very extensive including a bunch of assignable envelopes...the sampler (actually multisampler) has few limits, and like everythng else about SunVox rewards study and experimentation.

    Sampling external sources, and resampling recursively within SunVox is a gas, of course, but now that SunVox supports Files app you also can load clips from your sample libraries in other Files supporting apps

    Great answer. It’s So cheap too. I’m sold :)

    Adding SunVox as FX in AUM and AB3 is crashing for me at the moment. Will report.

    Just happened to me too, opening SunVox first (with an Input module in place) sorted it...seems that AUM/AB doesn’t see SV unless an Input Module is live....

  • S_nV_x is amazing, especially on android with the file system and tracker mods compatibility. one of the most underrated apps on iOS too.

    It appears as an output for me, and doesn’t have to be removed to hear the output as long as the input module is connected to the output in some way.

    It’s an Audiobus midi sender / receiver as well. Unfortunately no state save though.

    Yes Sunvox is definitely also a sound source (and midi source) in AB. but it’s not what AB calls an “Output”, which is what I’m indicating in my post

    This is the thing about AB nomenclature- SunVox as a sound source in AB is found in the AB box called “Input”... not in the “Output” box, which is the destination for audio in AB to flow into and where some users might look for SunVox for sampling into but it’s not how you’d connect Sunvox for sampling...that only works if SunVox is in the Effect box.

    Curious about the tracker mods capability you mention

    In Sunvox iOS, .xm and .mod files downloaded on the device from web, from modarchive.org for example, (and other web sources as well) or exported in device from Pixitracker app (.xm) or the VividTracker app (.mod) directly “Open In” SunVox.

    I’m confused. I have been sampling into SunVox in the Output box for the last hour. Honest.

    [edit] it seems it only appears as an output destination if it’s already running. It will show the reload loop thing if there’s no input module in the project. But if you have both those things it can be loaded in either the output or FX box.

    Good looking out and Good to know!
    Thanks for that

  • Excuse me for being thick but what does:

    iOS: user files are now available through the Files app;

    ..actually mean in practice?

    -you can use sunvox as a mod player (abit limited though).
    -Create "demoscene" type tunes and participate in demoscene comps.
    -rip samples from old mod files like they did back in the day.

    better file management.
    Now you can browse and share your sunvox files in the "On my ipad" section of Files.
    much better way of importing midi files and samples etc

    Same as iOS then...cool for android

    These are great. For those who are scratching your heads at what they are, first off, that's understandable. Second, they essentially allow for note randomization and variation within a pattern. Each effect allows you to direct SunVox where to get a note from.

    The example song for 29 is a good place to help you understand:

    The notes are all set up on track 0. Track 1 then directs SunVox to choose a random note from lines 00-08 on track 0, and changing the note on track 1 transposes that note.

    Each of these effects then does more or less the same thing, just in a different manner.

    Thanks @Carnbot was looking at file import/export but didn't realise that the app files were now in the Files app. Did SV move them?

    Anyway that let me organise all my monthly folders of files going back to 2015 into yearly folders so a bit less clutter. What happens with Samples and MIDI though?
