Also forgot to ask is there a way to mute layers when building a instrument that would be handy.

+1. I keep thinking I'm missing the mute button... I hope I am!

@VirSyn Its still early days but would be good to have 16 drum pads as an option to trigger samples. Any future plans for drum pads?
i.e Choose drum pads or keyboard
Are the effects per sample or per bank/keygroup?

effects are per instrument at the moment. one of the open fields to explore further...

@VirSyn is there an inbuilt bit crush/decimate effect?

    not yet.

Ok downloaded via Dougs link thanks for the early video as was on the fence but think I will get some use after watching the video. I made my first 2 layered I Instrument. I’m trying to pan layer 1 left layer 2 right inside the green layer tab on the left panel of the app. If I switch between layers both layers are moving the direction I’m turning the knobs and not splitting the signal anyone any ideas why this is? Is the a delinked button or something?

This could be a bug. Will investigate.

I just want to understand it's typical end use/USP for the average IOS musical jackrabbit (self).

It’s basic purpose is to be able to build sampled instruments....so if you have a real instrument that you want to sample and use you can make a more realistic sounding one than if you used a single sample.

Velocity layers.....record a note e.g C3 from your instrument, record it 3 times, quiet, medium and loud....each sample has a different character (depending on the instrument).
You can now put these 3 samples one in each velocity layer, so as you play harder on the keys it will use the relevant sample, therefore changing the character of the sound. If you did this with a single sample all that changes is volume.

Zones....You can also record notes at different pitches, with most instruments the character of the sound changes with pitch as well as velocity...record as many as you need, space them out across the keyboard, and then use the zones to say which sample is used for each pitch range (zone). If you did this with a single sample the app will transpose the sample which will sound unnatural at the extremes.

Not too techie I hope :)

Generous block by block explanation. No idea how I would actually use this, but look forward to videos etc. Thanks for the schooling Mister.

I've got sampler things like this in my desktop DAW's, but never use them because of the hassle of loading and mapping and all that jazz. I was thinking the same about this initially, but Doug's vid and some of the feedback has made me think differently. Being able to quickly sample anything going through AUM, and then play it via the keyboard (since it maps it across the keys automatically) is a really useful thing - and handy for keeping CPU down, as well as the Moogs and newer synths cripple my Air 2. Maybe your workflow is different to mine, but I think this might fit into mine nicely.

@VirSyn - can the notes be triggered via sequencers (e.g. Steparppoly) as well as played via the keyboard? I'm guessing this is the case, but wanted to check.

@Virsyn liking it a lot so far. Question:

How does the "Reference to Sample" feature work? If I open a sample like a drum loop from the files app (AudioShare folder) and take a slice for one key, then want to take a different slice for a second key, on down the line, the only way I see to do it is to open that same file multiple times. Is this loading it in once for all instances, or is it loading copies of the loop each time? Or is there a different way to do this?

[edit] I discovered the duplicate zone function. Is the way to assure only one copy of the sample is loaded?

It doesn't load the sample regardless in how many zones you use it. It only loads what it needs just for the next small time quantum.

  • Despite initial grumpyness I'm enjoying playing around with AudioLayer enough to share a 4 bar noodle screen capture with a custom patch using one of my SY85 samples :)

Yes, StepPolyArp and Patterning 2 tested so far and both work great with this :)

There is a "Drive" (like Gain) effect that can really rough up the sound.

That's cool, so you can get the trigger animations in the AU gui. For some reason that's not working here. Is there anything special you have to do with an instrument to set that up?

  • @Carnbot said:

I did nothing special, the instrument only has one sample.

The 'playback cursor animation' is present if the currently playing sample is shown on screen which might not always be the case when using instruments with multiple samples.

  • @VirSyn One problem I had is if I’m using the app as a AU and try to create a new instrument I lose the ability to use my on screen iOS keyboard to name the instrument and can’t get it back without hard resetting my iPad Pro 9.7 2016, latest iOS. I’ve also had issues with my iOS dock hiding after using the app. It’s fine if I use the app as a standalone. For now will have to create instruments in standalone only because of this as can’t name them. Anyone else having this problem.

That's interesting :) Can get it to work in Cubasis but for some reason not in AUM.
Or apeMatrix. working on Air 2 but not my 12.9

This is a bug on ipad pro 12.9 pro2 @Virsyn

And the drum pads? I think there are clearly two schools of thought on sampling; the keyboardists and the MPC fans.

You're right the actual file size doesn't change, but AudioLayer doesn't load the sample and even using hundreds of Zones using these big samples cost nearly no ram resources in AudioLayer ( it's below 0.5 Mb / Zone even with gigabyte samples...). That's the special characteristic of the streaming engine.

In this first version we rely on using a third party importer like AudioShare if you really need cutting down recorded samples. Later we will add destructive editing inside AudioLayer too. It simply wasn't our priority due to the facts above.

@Samu isn’t the placement of the yellow markers for each zone the equivalent to crop/trim (as you can zoom in)? Fade would be nice but you can also use the Level envelope for fade in as well?

Doesn’t trim the actual file size. Big part of the attraction of this for me was making patches on mobile then exporting to iPad. With different samples per layers and zones we could be talking like 1gb per patch with a complex patch using lots of small chunks of long wavs....yikes!

Thanks for reply :) Yeah it’s not a massive problem until you wanna export a patch to another device...Then you’re looking at potentially having to send masses of Wav Files across per patch :(

don't follow what you mean by 'wanna export a patch to another device'?

There was talk about making a community effort to create patches for this AudioLayer thing meaning we should be able to easily share our creations with other users.

i don't see that as a massive problem.

I do.. I don’t wanna have to export a patch that’s 1gb by itself...Imagine sharing a bank of those?! Would take all day to transfer them all and be bigger storage space than most people’s icloud accounts.

maybe this sampler ain't for you i guess. I find it amazing as it is and perfect for using with my ipad.
