  • My name is Dom and I'm originally from Poland but have been living out of my country since 91. First in Italy now in Oxford UK. I started playing music when I was 15, it was self taught guitar
trying to work out Beatles tunes. Did a lot of busking while in Italy meeting a lot of random (some very cool) people but also ended up living rough for some 3 months. Between then and now I managed to work as an outdoor market sale person, cleaner, gardener and now teaching in a special needs college where I also lead some music sessions. I'm also lucky enough to be in my final year of MA in music therapy in Bristol. I was living a totally fancy free existence putting together two bands and writing a lot of music until 3.5 years ago when all of a sudden the adult life slotted onto my being. From fancy free I almost have a 'real' profession, bought a house with my partner and last but not least I am a father of a lovely 3 year old girl. Previously I've been messing with workstations/computers to write arrangements for my bands (Cubase, reason, logic, ableton) but most recently due to portability (mainly room to room) I dived into ios music to the point of it becoming my main instrument despite being fairly proficient on guitar, bass and drums/percussion. Here's a link to my last demised band which I'm still kind of proud of. I wrote about 75% of the material but arrangement contribution of other members was top notch, it felt gooood.

Funny someone in this thread has mentioned Star Wars cantina

    I am me.

  • Hey Dom. That live stuff was amazing. Is that you playing bass? I recently took a new position in a Physical Therapy clinic. One of my co workers is a fellow from Poland who has become one of my newest favorite people. His name is Wojtek. Spelled the same. I'll turn him on to your video. He'll like that.

Thanks for the link to the midi files @Brain. Found several there that I want to download.

Never heard of Stone Trek before, but I checked out a few on YouTube. Pretty funny stuff!

I'm in Atlanta, so not too far. Hope we can cross paths some day.

Been to Atlanta on a few occasions! I'm happy you appreciate 'Stone Trek' - all those Redshirts you see getting killed off in the various episodes are real people - fans sent me photos of themselves which I caricatured Flintstones-style... Something of a badge of honor, I guess; check out www.newgrounds.com for a sampling of the enthusiastic response I received.

  • @superdom Do you find you need keyboard skills in music therapy or is playing guitar sufficient?

  • edited February 2014

@Ben cheers for kind words Ben. Yes, that's me lol I would have preferred to say that I was the drummer! (Not for the looks!). These days I'm trying to implement ios in a band situation but finding that either others don't take it seriously or it is just a bit fragile to take to gigs etc.

Yeah, feel free to link the guy up :). The actual name of the band is in polish even if the drummer is Ausie, guitarist French and sax player English. Your mate will tel you what it means.

@PaulB Piano used to be the main instrument in classic MT because of the tonal and dynamic range and possibility to play it together with the client. These days the guitar seems to be moving up on the list because of its portability but also because it can be open tuned for non-musical clients or/and used percussively. I can find my way around the keyboard using mostly triads but it takes me a little more time to find chords that it would on a guitar. I guess In my case I'm making up by playing a few other instruments. I've run sessions exclusively on the ipad as an instrument but find that a screen can be a barrier to communication.

MT is a very broad discipline and can be based on different approaches: improvisation, songwriting, playing pre-composed stuff or just talking depending on the client group. To answer your question some piano skills are required but you don't need to have any grades. This is at least the case at UWE Bristol where I'm training. Nordoff & Robbins May have a little different take on this though. Mind you community MT is growing in strength and that can be more relaxed in form.

The course I'm doing accepted me based on experience as I don't even have a music degree, just diploma. If you chuck in songwriting skills, guitar, percussion, vocals and the right personality (that most musicians have anyway lol) you're good.

@superdom It's definitely something that interests me. I did 2 years of a music degree, (I applied for a CNAA Diploma in Music in the Community but got 'switched'), have worked as an English teacher for foreign students and as a support worker in a neurodisability rehabilitation centre where I gained an EDI Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care for Adults. I'm currently working as a community care worker. My keyboard skills are probably similar to yours, but I also play bass guitar, guitar, oboe, soprano sax, recorders and a bit of drums/percussion and have played in many bands over the years. I've always assumed that lack of classical piano training would exclude me from working in music therapy, so it's encouraging to hear otherwise. Thanks for the information.

  • @PaulB it will depend we're you are in the country (assuming you're in the uk). UWE Bristol crew would love you, I also heard there is a specific community music therapy training in Manchester. The problem is that all these courses are MA level so you don't get much financial support and they can be very pricey. They're also a few and far between. I'm in Oxford but ended up in Bristol which kind of illustrates the point.

  • @superdom Thanks, I guess it's something I'll have to revisit if and when my financial situation improves.

  • @supadom. "Ala has a cat." Is that correct Wojtek?

  • I'm Toby, 31. Been doing music under the name otem rellik for around 12 years. I mostly make underground type hip hop stuff but I'm into all different types of music. I make midi controllers and do a lot of circuit bending/tinkering with sound things. I also make videos. Here is a music video I did for my last album:

My girlfriend and I have a new project called nIGHtTIMEsCHOOLbUS. We both rock ipad set ups with lots of different apps. Here is a quick jam we recorded about a week ago:

We are working on an album that is mostly produced from our ipads.
    And finally, my site: http://www.otemrellik.com/

  • Hi, new member here!

I'm not amazing but I'll introduce myself. (This discussion hasn't been updated in 4 years, is there a newer one?)

I'm Michael from the US, have been making music for around 30 years (since I was 13). I'm an enthuiast, but played guitar in bands during college (mostly heavy metal and rap), and got into electronic music around 20 years ago. Proudest music achievement...touring in a few big shows with other metal bands, but that was years ago.
I've been playing with iOS for about 5 years and love it! First just used standalone synths and drum machines with hardware and PC, but the iOS DAWs have become so powerful.

    Glad to be here!

  • @ocelot
Hey man, welcome to the forum.
    5 years ya say?
I’m sure I’ll be picking up some info from you in the future around here.

  • Hey thanks for the welcome!

@CracklePot 5 years on and off on iOS, first got an iPad and a few apps to replace a few VA synths and effects processors, was content with that for a couple of years, but later stumbled upon Audiobus 2 and connecting apps together, and got hooked!

Looking forward to learning about the new tech like MIDI AU, and chatting with the knowledgeable members here.

    Thanks again :)

And sorry for resurrecting a 4 year old discussion. I just searched for "introduce yourself" and this popped up.

People get old too, so that's a very natural thing :)
Welcome and have fun making new music!

    We'll soon change that ! :D :D :D Welcome aboard !

  • Yes, welcome @ocelot! You arrive at a most interesting time. You can read a bit of everything discussed now. And it shows the uktidimensionak aspect of this marvelous place.

It has always interested me to look into the past of the forum. Always surprised I don't recognize anybody!
Looking at this thread I see a lot of people gone from the scene. Exceptions here at present @Tarekith, @Brain and @supadom . They have been around since 2013-14. Perhaps they will comment on the transitions ios has made and maybe why we seem to disappear rather quickly on the forum and a new wave ( like me) arrives.
Unless it is just like the rest of life, ephemeral,

  • No idea why people leave, sorry. I think a lot of people realize that making music with a computer is still easier for them than some of the hoops you have to jump through on iOS.

  • edited November 2018

Haha, yeah I feel like a hippy being asked about the 60’s.

Well, I think IOS has improved massively from the point of connectivity. Clock sync for me in particular has seen a huge leap even though back in the day some of the apps just worked (Samplr/Loopy) perhaps due to the fact that they followed the classic midi protocol as opposed to the newer stuff. Now with Link and its adoption rate things are ticking very well indeed.

Also the new boys on the block other than Audiobus (AUM etc.) have made things much more interesting.

The only constant in all this is Apple never failing to screw things up for everyone, users and devs alike. Half of the reason for the existence of this forum I guess. :)

    P.s. didn’t I mention Gadget?

I never noticed this thread before.

Well, I‘ve made a habit of never ever posting personal information or data anywhere on the internet. But because this seems to be a great place, at least there are four things I can say:
    1. I am a nice person (ask my wife)
    2. I am a very boring person (ask my wife)
    3. I‘m too old for this (ask, well, you know...)
    4. My real name is not Leon

    Cheers, LK

I’m actually in the early part of this thread as ‘deleted user’. The reason I left was that my iPad 2 was getting extremely old, iOS, apps and other members had moved with the times and I felt that I could not contribute or learn in discussions about new stuff I had no access to. I came back after I got myself an iPad Pro and the discussions here were suddenly relevant to me once more.

  • @LeonKowalski ... You couldn't be "Killer" Kowalski, could you?

Nope, sorry. Actually, I have no idea who that is.
