Edit. Follow the github link, they have a 3D printed prototype with knobs. It seems nothing is set in stone yet for UI, or I/O
I have the opposite problem: I could probably wire it up, but would be lost trying to get the software running.
Looks neat. I have a couple Raspberry Pi laying around that don’t get used. I’ve never been able to make any meaningful music with them so a “passing build” status project is probably good enough. I guess that depends on what “passing” really means though.
For those that say there aren’t any knobs, there are. That is a picture of a prototype case the holes for the encoders are there.

Total cost there looks to be about US$200 - but you could save quite a bit by scavenging buttons from other gear.
The most sensible way to start would be to try running the software/OS on a desktop - maybe in a virtual machine - to see if it does what you want.

The whole point of the OP-1 is to have a cute little box with buttons and knobs to turn (not that there's anything wrong with that). It doesn't sound that great or do anything you can't just as easily do in ios or desktop.

Yes, but do you really want to spend $200 and quite a few hours building something to find out that doesn't do what you want?
Also, the physical design can be heavily modified according to which parameters you choose to add buttons or knobs for.

Cor, I've always thought I would love an OP-1 and hover round the TE website on a regular basis but some unidentified force has stopped me clicking the buy button up until now. What is it about the OP-1 that falls short for you?
This open source version is buzzing round my head because it effectively becomes a thing where you can add your own features or squash issues that irritate. Will have to dig into the software to see if it lives up to that promise.
Probably the opposite to Dawdles, in that I’ve hardly used it. Pretty much mint this one.
No reflection on the OP-1, I like what it does, the way it works/sounds, but I could put the money to better use - monitors for example, which would fit in with my iPad/desktop workflow. I’ve also been offered a Maschine mk3 controller for a decent price, which again is more useful.
It’s a lovely thing, but a bit superfluous to my current setup.
Shame you’re not nearer, you could borrow it for a bit, see what you think.
I know. I just thought I’d go with it and see where it went. It led me to a few discoveries, one of which was the Teenage Engineering Bluetooth knob and one was another raspberry pi based project that seems pretty slick. Comes with a touch screen!
