I think the Equator upgrade is great. You can’t load your own samples but the selection is good and the synth range is excellent, good modulation possibilities. And it’s very simple to tweak the Seaboard envelopes. I’d say it’s a must have if you have a Roli.
No, I haven’t checked it out yet.
I haven’t tried any of the Desktop stuff other than the editor. I’ve found it works really well with GeoShred. Some of the other apps the MPE is a bit more iffy. You can play all kinds of wrong notes now!! My biggest problem with it is I think I need to find a good way to keep it in place. All the different ways you drag your fingers across it make it move around way too much. I have a feeling Velcro will not be sufficient to keep it down. I haven’t tried it in BM3 yet. Garageband is the only DAW that will record the MPE, but I’m sure you could set up others using a multichannel approach.
I used Velcro to secure it in my Seatar. You'd be suprised how strong it is. And, you can peel the velcro off the ~hard~ plastic. I wouldn't put it on the silicone surface. Also, the bottom is better for velcro than the sides, because the sides have the DNA connectors.
I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do for a case for it. I’ve either been using a tablet bag that barely doesn’t fit it, or one that is too big. Somtimes I just throw it in it’s original box. I don’t really want to spend money on the official one. You do want some kind of protective sleeve that thing picks up all kinds of dust, debris, hairs, etc.
Another tip is the apps don’t have to have MPE. If it’s AU you can just string a few together as multichannel synths. So in AUM for example set up 5 of the synth, set each to it’s own channel, then use the Seaboard editor on Desktop and set it to only work on those channels, and also change the pitchbend to match that of the synth. Then you have your own MPE. I did it here with KQDixie, but still need to test with more apps.
Currently, I use an Amazon laptop sleeve. I’d love a tight hardcase, but it can’t be too much bigger than the device itself.
Maybe if we spend hours looking through art supplies cases we might find a hard case the perfect size. I’d love to get a nice hard case that still makes it fit in a day bag. This thing is the only “keyboard” I have that fits in a standard backpack.
Yeah, I meant to try ODYSSEi in Gadget for a mock MPE version, but haven’t gotten around to it. I think it should definitely work there. Not sure if you can get the pitchbend up though. If the app only can do +/- 2 semitones it will only bend that far, which would still give you manual pitch vibrato. So with KQDixie, I had it set to +/-12 since that what KQDixie can do. After setting the Seaboard to the same pitch bend range, it will be callibrated correctly but you won’t bend past that amount. So sliding from C3 to E4 will stop at C4 pitch wise. IOS AU stuff seems to go to +/- 24 at most but that is as far as you can slide on the Seaboard Block anyway.
I love the block so much...
Portable, no wires, mpe, feels great...
Fav mpe apps to use with mine.
Synthone
Volt
Geoshred
moog synths
Tardigrain
Hoping to see mpe for zeeon, and Layr soon if they don't alreasy support it lol I've been to busy to try it recently
Love my block. I have the full Equator and Cypher2 and I must say... Cypher 2 blows Equator AND Strobe out of the water in my opinion. It is phenomenal!
Hey, @DMan, these are on sale at woot:

@mAxjUlien Just running through the presets and the sounds I hear. I was impressed with about half the sounds in equator, but cypher made me giddy with every new one I selected. Mind you, I have not programmed either yet, which could completely change things. But at the moment I think I’ll end up using Cypher a lot more. This could also change if Equator gets a better batch of realistic intstruments.
Who wouldn’t?
Glad you are enjoying the Roli kit. I'm also a big fan of what they have to offer, and with the recent release of Cypher2, I went ahead and picked it up after playing with the demo for a bit. Here's something I composed after a few hours with Cypher2 in Ableton Live:
Onward and upward with ROLI enhanced noise!!
Anyone with more than one Seaboard Block? Any significant differences from the Rise keyboard? (For those with experience with both). Does the ribbon or pitch bend strip send velocity and aftertouch? Can it trigger notes by touching, or only bend notes triggered by the keys? How about the point where the boards meet? Does it happen to somehow do a smooth bend over the connection point? Not a deal-breaker, just curious.
On the general fascinating subject of Roli Blocks, has anyone used both versions of the LightPad Blocks, including the newer M type? Heard there might be some difference in responsiveness. Also, does anyone recommend those other little Blocks like Loop and Live? How useful do you find them to be? Do all the Blocks act as regular Bluetooth MIDI devices without any quirks or odd surprises? Anyone try any of the Blocks with the PPG iOS apps like WaveMapper or Infinite?
Roli appears to be heading in an interesting direction, hardware and software. They seem to realize the value of having “modular” Lego-type products with a lower price entry point. And a different kind of modular- not a wire in sight! Makes me wonder if Roli or someone could produce similar sized items that were digital sound sources or modulators.
Great stuff DMan! Thanks for sharing it. Nice timbral changes along with the other expressive goodness. It seems to me that sounds that evolve/morph or aren’t instantly classifiable by the brain are more interesting. Kinda keeps you on the edge of your seat... but in a relaxing way, if you know what i mean. Also, I kept waiting for the salt lamp near the keyboard to be triggered by the aftertouch or something!
Okay, I will let you know. I kind of hate Gadget, but I decided to try to use it considering I can actually do 9/8 in it without needing to do crazy workarounds that involve listening to a metronome that is not going in 9/8... Maybe this weekend I’ll see about trying the Seaboard with it maybe even record live hacked MPE MIDI mode if it works.
Did you set Live up to do MPE ‘properly’ by assigning a gazillion MIDI channels, as the MPE standard is unsupported in there at present, right?
Yep and saved out as a template.
Stop Press. I think the Audio Evolution Mobile Studio (see other threads on the forum home page) can do a fair amount of MPE recording into single midi lanes. Pretty cool (for iOS).
But I need to investigate further.
